SECTION C Wednesday, May 6, 1914 PROCLAIMED BY PRESIDENT—MAY 8, 1914 Special Day Set Aside for Mothers 1959 MARKS 45th OBSERVANCE OF DAY HONORING NATION'S MOTHERS Down through the ages, great writers, artists, poets, composers, and statesmen have turned to "Mother" as a source of inspiration for their achievements. That the place of honor has always been given to Mother, can be seen from the earliest of recorded history. The tribute due "thy father and thy mother" was included in the Bible's Ten Commandments . . . inscribed thousands of years before the birth of Christ. And, Aeschylus (525-456 B.C.), the father of the Greek tragic drama, wrote." Honour thy father and thy mother stands written among the three laws of most revered righteousness." Although honoring mothers is historic and classic in all phases of the arts and in our social structures, yet it remained for a determined young Philadelphia woman to come up with one of the world's most inspiring tributes to Mother —Mother's Day! In 1907, on the first anniversary of her own mother's death, Miss Anna Jarvis asked her church to hold special services in honor of mothers everywhere. Prior to that, the nearest thing to Mother's Day as we know it had been a "Mothering Day" in medieval England. On this day all young men and women, who were apprenticed away from home, were asked to journey back to their hometowns and visit their parents. For a while, to go "a mothering" was a very real part of life in England — a time when children expressed their love for their mothers through specicial celebrations and gift-giving. After a time, however, Mothering Day faded from history. The Mother's Day observance was first made legal by the State of Florida, in 1908. Then in 1914, climaxing seven years of pioneering on the part of Anna Jarvis, both houses of the 63rd Congress adopted Public Resolution 25 — the official Declaration of Mother's Day. May 8th of that same year, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first proclamation declaring Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. ing" was a very real part of life in England — a time when children expressed their love for their mothers through special celebrations and gift-giving. Public Resolution 25 makes it the duty of the President of the United States to request the Observance of Mother's Day on that second Sunday in May. And, In the words of the resolution, the nation honors its mothers — "the greatest source of the country's strength and inspiration."
