German Counsul General Explains Problems of East, West Germany
Guest speaker of the Anaheim Rotary Club Monday afternoon was the German Consul General in Los Angeles, Edward C. Schneider. Schneider stood before an estimated audience of some 73 Rotarians at their luncheon in the Elk's Lodge and spoke on the Berlin problem and the coming May 27 deadline issued by Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev. The deadline is for a withdrawal of the Western Allies from the bitterly contested city.
Schneider told his attentive audience that unification must be striven for by all available means, but not at the cost of giving the city over to the Communists. He said that the Russians have advanced a plan whereby 50 representatives from either side meet in an "All German Council," but protested that West Germany could not accept this proposal since West Germany has a population of 82,000,000 people whereas East Germany has 17,000,000.
Speaking for West Germany he said that free elections were wanted, but the Russians would never allow this because they were aware that the outcome would destroy their political grip on the East German peoples and to back up this contention cited the East German revolt in which was crushed with the aid of Soviet tanks. "How can fire and water merge?" he asked.
Should such free elections be held, and East Germany then express their expected preference for a Western alliance, then other surrounding Satellite countries — Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary — would demand a similar right. This Schneider said, the Russians could never tolerate nor afford.
But in reference to a certain Western squeamishness to take a stand on the Berlin crisis, Schneider told his audience that should will allow Kruchshev to bluff us out then not only would we be abandoning the Germans but all the other peoples of the world who look to us as a symbol of freedom. To abandon Berlin would be to destroy faith in our strength and honor, and would result in the economic annexation of Germany and later of Europe.
If the West stands firm then we have a chance for peaceful coexistence."
In telling of the 1,000 people a day leaving East Germany with only the barest essentials, Schneider told of the East German dog who fled across the border where he was met by a West German dog. The latter asked if he had left because of the food. "No, I had plenty to eat," the East German dog said. "Did you lack shelter?" the other dog inquired. "No, I had a fine dog house." "Well then, just why did you leave?" his friend asked the East German canine. "I wanted to bark," was the reply, "I wanted to bark."
Republicans To Hold School For Politics
A School of Politics for all interested Republicans is scheduled for the evenings of May 14 and May 26 at the Santa Ana Club House, according to John Tyler, President of the Orange County Young Republicans.
"The Young Republicans are providing this school as a service to all Republicans who are earnestly interested in the practical aspects of political organization and campaigning," Tyler states.
The problems of formal organization will be the topic of the first session of the school scheduled for May 14. A panel consisting of Coalson Morris, Chairman of the Republican Central Committee of Orange County; Mrs. Douglas Yarbrough, Vice President of Orange County Federation of Republican Womens Clubs; John Tyler, President of the Young Republicans of Orange County; Herbert Britton of the Republican Assembly; and James Whetmore, President of the Rossmoor GOP Club will highlight the first meeting. Don Anderson, Executive Secretary of the Orange County Republican Central Committee, will discuss future philosophy of the party. Hubert Ferry will discuss legislative representa-
But in reference to a certain Western squeamishness to take a stand on the Berlin crisis, Schneider told his audience that should allow Kruchshev to bluff us out then not only would we be abandoning the Germans but all the other peoples of the world who look to us as a symbol of right and freedom. To abandon Berlin would be to destroy faith in our strength and honor, and would result in the economic annexation of Germany and later of Europe, making Russia the strongest country in the world. Backing out now, the implication was, would eventually destroy us.
We must be flexible, he said, but there is "...a very thin line between flexibility and weakness."
As for the danger of war, Consul Schneider told the gathering that Kruchshev is realistic enough to realize such a conflict would de-
