Air travel from Los Angeles to PARIS in 14 hours is today’s jet-age fact. One by one, all major airlines are converting to either prop-jets or pure jet aircraft. Fares will remain about the same. While many lush gambling casinos are found in PUERTO RICO, cockfighting remains the national pastime. A visitor’s must be the rum distillery, where generous samples of the world’s finest rum is to be had for the asking. Robert Wallace has just returned from a very enlightening evangelistic trip through India — but many more are getting ready for Honolulu and Europe this summer and fall — Plans should be made well in advance for contemplations for next summer to Alaska. Following Too Close Can Be Pain In Need SACRAMENTO (UPI) — California Highway Patrol has warning for the driver who lowes the car ahead too close. He may be a figurative "pain the neck" one minute and a lit one the next. "The whiplash caused by a end collision is really much more than just a mere 'pain in the neck'—it can be and often is a seated permanent injury," commissioner Bradford M.enden said. Crittenden noted that last about five per cent of all fatal injury accidents on California streets and highways involve driver who was "following closely." Center KE 5-3621 FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT SPEAKS Lions Club Hears Comparison of German and Russian Education STANTON — Annual election of officers, comparison of German, Russian and American educational systems by exchange student Harry K. Leinke, and 4-H Korn Poppers and their guide dogs for the blind all shared the spotlight at the Stanton Lions Club meeting, last night. Merrill C. Joy, water company executive, was elected president for the coming year. Other officers chosen are Harry Groos, first vice-president; Lloyd Seeman, second vice-president; Dick Knorr, third vice-president; Mura S. Muraoka, re-elected secretary; Harry P. Tabatt, re-elected treasurer; Art Neiblas, tail-twister; Fred Galerkin, lion-tamer; Calvin Pebley, Lewis McBartney, and C. C. Rube, two-year directors; Dann Cubb, Dan Doone, and Royal Marten are hold-overs. Harry K. Leinke, in a discussion period, compared for the Lions the forced Russian education with the liberal American school training, and the pre-World War II German schooling. Leinke was schooled in Nazism through high school, Russian-trained through college years, and now is a foreign exchange student at Santa Ana Junior College. Modern German history dates back to 1870, he said. Going through Nazi textbooks gives the reader the impression that there is nothing other than Nazism. “Mein Kampf” is off-beat matter, he stated, and not advisable for students on high school and junior college level. The book is good reference study for college students. “American history books are stripped down to bare facts and very objective,” he declared. “The way of teaching is more potential in order to further his education. Then he will be trained according to Russian methods.” Leinke pointed out how freedom was restricted. “If you live in Russia,” he said, “You can't change your residence, and you can't change your job if you want.” 4-H Korn Poppers Lew Gelser, Dennis Bingham, and George Stouder, and Leader Russel L. Stouder were club guests and familiarized Lions with the Guide Dogs for the Blind program. Each boy put his German shepherd, whom he has trained the past nine months, through obedience test2, and Stouder showed colored slides depicting the dogs when they were given to the boys as pups. The local Lions Club helped two boys sponsor the dogs, which are given their final guide dog training at Blind Dogs for the Blind Inc. at San Rafael. “It is through your dollars and the boys' care and training of the dogs that blind people can lead a normal life,” Stouder said. (UPI) — The Orange Highway Patrol has this wing for the driver who follows the car ahead too closely: may be a figurative "pain in neck" one minute and a literal one next. The whiplash caused by a rearcollision is really much more just a mere 'pain in the neck' can be and often is a serious permanent injury," patrol missioner Bradford M. Crittn said. Attenders noted that last year it five per cent of all fatal and any accidents on California's sets and highways involved a serious person who was "following too early." Modern German history dates back to 1870, he said. Going through Nazi textbooks gives the reader the impression that there is nothing other than Nazism. "Mein Kampf" is off-beat matter, he stated, and not advisable for students on high school and junior college level. The book is good reference study for college students. "American history books are stripped down to bare facts and very objective," he declared. "The American way of teaching is more liberal. People make their own choice of learning. "In Russia," he continued, "the student is made to work in a specialized field. Russia has an advantage in its forceful education. About 70,000 engineers will be graduated from universities this year." "Forced education," Leinke reported, "tries to put people out like automation into a specialized field. They are just machines, and not good for society. Their values are only good for what they have been bred for." Leinke noted that the large majority of Russian people work in factories and have no opportunity for education. "The intelligent youngster is taken from his parents," he said, "Put through schooling, and doctrinated." In discussing freedom in Russia, Leinke said, "To read a Western paper or magazine can put you in jail. To listen to a Western radio broadcast can also cost your freedom. All scientific material is written in the Russian language," he noted. Especially is this true when the staff, which is predominately female, numbers two lovely young women who will become brides in May and June, the Misses Emma Ferreira and Joyce Blevens. Miss Blevens, whose wedding is slated for the month of June, received a phone call the other day which set the whole Centralia School district office on its ear. Chef Milani called from Hollywood to ask her a question. Word got around before the buzzer had scarcely stopped buzzing and quite a crowd gathered around the telephone. Between flustered Miss Blevens and kibitzers, she answered the question. Now she will receive a set of stainless steel tableware and she and her fiance, Don Cutler of Compton, will appear in Hollywood in person on Chef Milani's TV program for June brides.
