News Notes from the Lighter Side United Press International LESSON FOR AMATEURS CHATHAM, England (UPI)—A do-it-yourself tenant in a public housing project figured he'd save quite a bit by sweeping his own chimney. It cost him $14.60—the wages of four men required to retrieve the brush he lost in the flue. DISDAINS ROCKING CHAIR MONTREAL (UPI)—L. A. (Bud) Raymond, 66, retired after 47 years with a telegraph company and said he can hardly wait to get back to the hobby he abandoned several years ago because he was too busy. It's mountain climbing. IT'S "PROFESSOR TRUMAN" WASHINGTON (UPI)—Former President Harry S. Truman, who has lectured at a number of universities in recent years, said he'd been given a new academic title during his three-lecture course at Columbia University. "The boys up at Columbia call me 'Professor Truman of the Electoral College of 1949,'" he told an audience Thursday night. ATTRACTS POLICE TOO SAN FERNANDO, Calif. (UPI)—Gary L. Seybert, 21, told police Thursday night he'd had no idea those plants in his carefully cultivated garden were marijuana. "I'm a rabbit hunter," he said. "A guy gave me these seeds and told me they would attract all your money." YOUR MONEY'S WORTH Investor Advised to 'Sit Tight' With High Quality List of Stocks By SYLVIA PORTER "An investor whose name is Legion dropped in to see me the other day and to ask me what I thought of his list of stocks," said Ralph E. Samuel, head of the Wall Street firm bearing his name. "I glanced at his list and nodded approvingly as I ticked off his holdings in American Can, U.S. Steel, Standard Oil of New Jersey, Bethlehem Steel, Safeway Stores, Amerada, Alcoa, Royal Dutch, etc." "That's a quality list of stocks." I said. "You don't have any junk; obviously you haven't been going in for radical speculation. You should be congratulated. What do you want to know?" "What I want to know," he came back in a voice both angry and puzzled, "is why, in his so-called biggest bull market of all time, my stocks aren't doing a blankety-blank thing. Take a look again." "I did a double-take and then saw it. Every stock I had ticked off is selling below the price at which it was quoted on the closing day of 1958! Others on his list — big names like General Motors, Union Pacific — are just about the same as on Dec. 31." "Legion's list of high-grade stocks hasn't moved an lot in a market that supposedly has been going through the roof. On most of his good stocks he has paper losses compared with four months ago." "What did you tell Legion then?" I tried to comfort him by saying that his list wasn't as lack- course at Columbia University. Seybert, 21, told police Thursday night he'd had no idea those plants in his carefully cultivated garden were marijuana. "I'm a rabbit hunter," he said. "A guy gave me these seeds and told me they would attract all the rabbits I can shoot." BUT NO TURNKEY BUDLEIGH SALTERTON, England (UPI) —For rent today is a stout seaside residence with two cozy barred guest rooms and an exercise yard for the guests. It's the old police station and jail. BEFORE HIS TIME LONDON (UPI) — Police Sgt. Howard Perry reported that a 45-year-old man he arrested Wednesday for panhandling pleaded that he be let go because: "I am too old to work. I am over 40..." POWER COMPANY FUMES WETUMPKA, Ala. (UPI) —The Alabama Power Company was less outraged by a small fire in its offices Wednesday than by the principle of the thing. Firemen reported it was caused by a short circuit in a lighting fixture. FOR TOWING ONLY DALLAS, Tex. (UPI) —A friend admired Judge J. C. Muse's new foreign car and then asked: "But how are you going to pull your boat trailer with a car this small?" "Oh, I've got a Cadillac for that," the judge replied. "This car is for my personal use." SHE'S HAD IT LONDON (UPI) — The crew of the cable ship Alert demanded today the 45-year-old vessel be replaced. "A crewman said that as he was painting the ship in dock here, his paintbrush went through a rusted steel hull plate. DEAD TO RIGHTS CRICKLADE, England (UPI) —The 100-pound bag of cement got lighter and lighter all the way home. The landlord who missed it just followed the trail to the door of his tenant, Mrs. Dorothy Hill, 35. She was placed on probation on the theft charge. IT'S NO RECORD PRINCETON, N. J. (UPI) —The Princeton University freshman hamburger eating contest was won Wednesday by Thomas D. Frankel of New York City, who day of 1958! Others on his list —big names like General Motors, Union Pacific —are just about the same as on Dec. 31. "Legion's list of high - grade stocks hasn't moved an lot in a market that supposedly has been going through the roof. On most of his good stocks he has paper losses compared with four months ago." "What did you tell Legion then?" "I tried to comfort him by saying that his list wasn't as lackluster as it appeared. I told him that in the last few months the big activity has been centered in electronics stocks and such special situations as Zenith, Polaroid, Thiokol. I said that the people most astounded by the upsurge in American Telephone stock were the experts who never expected this favorite of the 'widows and orphans' to act spectacularly. I advised him to sit tight and wait." "Was he comforted?" "Not much. But since Legion left my office, I've been wondering whether his experience has any significance to the market. I have some ideas" —and he invited me to settle in my chair for some shop talk. Before I report on Samuel's interpretations, let me emphasize that this symbolic investor named Legion probably represents millions of holders of stocks today. For during these recent weeks of frenzy in the stock market, the great gains have been in a relative handful of issues, and the upwain has bypassed or hardly touched the majority of quality stocks. Inside the market the churning around has been terrific. For instance, this past Monday, when the familiar Dow-Jones average of industrial stocks rose 2½ points to an historic high, 545 issues listed on the New York Stock Exchange actually declined, while only 493 advanced. In March, when the feverish speculation in the stock market began to make coast-to-coast headlines, 521 issues on the Big Board posted declines, 35 were unchanged, only 515 advanced. And 35 to 40 per cent of the issues listed on the Stock Exchange today are still below their 1946 peaks ... Frankel of New York City, who downed six and a half hamburgers in five minutes. Last year's freshman winner consumed nine. State Hospitals Obtain Full Accreditation SACRAMENTO (UPI) — Full hospital accreditation has been granted California's mental hospitals at Agnews, Atascadero and Porterville, according to state mental hygiene director Daniel Blain. Blain noted in a recent report to the governor that endorsement by the joint commission on accreditation of hospitals indicates the institutions "have met all the ethical and professional standards for modern care and treatment of the patients. Poultry Producers Visit Washington Confab Mrs. R. G. Thomas, Secretary of the Orange County Poultry and Egg Producers Association has announced that the House Agriculture Committee held hearings on the "disastrous" price situation in eggs and broilers in Washington, D.C., Thursday. Her information for the announcement came from the United States Poultry and Egg Producers Association with which her club is affiliated. Mrs. Thomas said that poultrymen throughout the nation have appealed to Rep. Harold D. Cooley, (Dem. Cal.) Chairman of the committee, for help. The Orange County organization, with the help of similar groups and friends of the industry in Los Angeles and San Diego Counties, arranged to have Mrs. Ed Weiner of Vista, a director of the USPEPA, represent them at the hearings. CENTER (Corner of Helena) BOTH STORES IN ANAHEIM— Sit Tight' out of Stocks Inning this suggests to me," Samuel, "is that the stock may not be nearly as vulgar it is generally believed. Many quality stocks just fall in a boiling stock market may be more bedrock in the pattern than we've beening." Her point this pounds home I added, "is that more or this is a market of in-stocks rather than 'a' market. The selectivity mercer than ever." A third point that might be answered Samuel, "is, so many conflicting moves and shifts within the market, stocks are bound to get burn again. Some of the will brush off on them." Are hope you're right," I rose to go. "And in, next time Legion drops him that among his horde lives to count me and most ross I know." Buried 1959 by The Hall Syn- Inc.) Murdy's County Counsel Ouster Bill Assured SACRAMENTO — A bill to permit Orange County to fire its County Counsel received what amounted to final passage Friday in the State Assembly. The measure, by Sen. John Murdy, Jr., Santa Ana Republican, would permit the Board of Supervisors of any county to fire its counsel if it wishes. Under present law the counsel serves for a four-year term. The situation was brought to sharp focus in December when Orange County Supervisors attempted to suspend or fire County Counsel Joel Ogle but found they couldn't. Assemblyman Bruce F. Allen, San Jose Republican, said the Orange County Council had been indicted by the Orange County Grand Jury for allegedly receiving a $10,-000 bribe in connection with a Tidelands Oil contract. Allen headed up an assembly subcommittee on Tidelands which looked into Orange County's lease with American Marine Exploration Company of Houston, Tex. The bill was opposed by River-side Republican Lee M. Backstrand because he said it would make the county counsel position a political patronage job.
