Santa Ana Man Jailed On Suspicion of Robbery
By Orange County News Service
A suspect in the strong armed robbery of an Anaheim woman last week at the ABC Store in Santa Ana, is in custody today by Sheriff's investigators.
He is 23-year-old Pedro Esparza Gonzales, 14802 Harper St., Santa Ana, who was arrested in Whittler by lawmen.
The suspect is charged with the purse snatching attack against Mrs. Karen Lee Willis, 1307 S. Claremont, in the parking lot of the Santa Ana store.
Gonzales grabbed the woman's purse and after a struggle, made off with it, it is claimed. The bag contained approximately $33, plus personal papers.
Sheriff's investigators were able to trace the Santa Ana man, thanks to several papers he dropped with his name on it. He was seen leaving the area in a pickup truck.

YOUR MONEY’S WORTH
U.S. Government Bonds, at Four Per Cent, Going Begging This Year
By Sylvia Porter
It was March, 1933. The United States was at the end of the worst depression in history. Banks were closing on all sides; masses of Americans were jamming their banks from dawn to dark to withdraw deposits; gold was pouring out of the country on every ship; it was the panic before the “Bank Holiday.”
To meet the skyrocketing demands for greenbacks and gold, banks the nation over were dumping their U.S. Government securities. Even at 4 per cent interest a year, bonds of the Treasury due in more than a couple of years went begging for buyers. In that cycle of deflation, investors didn’t want to lend cash to the Treasury for more than a few months. On Mar. 3, 1933, the day before Treasury Secretary Ogden Mills turned his office over to Treasury Secretary William Woodin, the Treasury paid 4 3-4 per cent interest for a three-month loan.
It is April 1953, a little more than a quarter-century later. The United States is riding a strong upsurge to new peaks after more than a decade of virtually uninterrupted prosperity.
Yet, once again, even at 4 per cent or over a year, bonds of the U.S. Government are going begging. In this cycle of widespread fears of future inflation investors don’t want to lend cash to the Treasury for more than a few months.
At this time 2 1-2 per cent bonds which the Treasury sold at $100 during World War 11 are quoted at 84 to 85 — giving buyers at these prices well over 4 per cent on their money. To get a new loan for only a year or so, the Treasury today must pay 4 per cent or more.
Interest rates on United States Government securities, in short, are rivaling the highest levels since the bank panic of 1933.
It is a fascinating parallel in prices and Treasury troubles, but against a dramatically different background. Why is the Treasury today finding it so tough to sell bonds even at 4 per cent or higher rates?
A first reason why is that during this postwar era of almost constantly climbing living costs investors have become progressively disenchanted with buying large amounts of U.S. bonds. Basically, these bonds are the equivalent of cash-plus-interest. In inflations, cash loses buying power and U.S. bonds do, too. They are the opposite of hedges against inflation, and investors seeking protections against inflation do not want to lock up money in them for any period of time — even at these rates.
A second reason is that during this past year of a stunningly big Government deficit the Treasury has been selling many billions of new I.O.U.s to get cash to pay its bills. There is no scarcity of U.S. securities. In fact, many investing institutions feel they have bought enough and they don’t want to buy
