New Scout Troop Sets Monday Night Meet Troop No. 8 of Boy Scouts was organized at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church April 21. The new troop will meet on Monday at the church located at Magnolia Ave., and Orange at 7:30 p.m. The institutional representative is Ken Bullock; Troop Chairman, Bernard Lindenstein. Other members of the troop committee are: Raymond Bates, in charge of camping and outings; Franklin H. Wix, in charge of finance; Howard R. Davis, in charge of publicity. The Scoutmaster will be Albert A. Yates. A Mother's Auxiliary was started with Mrs. Mildred P. Davis in charge. Other members are: Mrs. Franklin Wix, Mrs. Manuela Bates, and Mrs. Marjorie Ash. Ronald Bates, a life Scout was selected as senior patrol leader. Other members are: Jim Richardson, Gary Ash, Franklin Wix Jr., and Robert Davis. The new troop is planning to attend the Council Camporee to be held at Camp Pendleton on May 1 and Camp Ahwahnee this coming summer. Paintings Exhibited Water colors and oils painted by John Severson, Dana Point artist and Orange Coast College graduate, are on exhibit this month in the college art gallery. Severson's hangings show his flair for depicting everything from bullfighting to surfing. He received his bachelor's degree from Chico State College and his masters degree at Long Beach State. While attending Chico State College he participated in the "Leading Painters of Northern California" exhibit and also won numerous prizes. BY THE THOUSANDS Roses in Descanso Gardens Now In Bloom; Feature All-America Rose bushes by the thousands are bursting forth into brightly colored blooms at Los Angeles County's Descanso Gardens in La Canada. The Descanso Rose Garden, one of the most widely known in California, will be in peak spring bloom season until about May 20, according to Superintendent John Threlkeld. The Descanso roses will continue in bloom throughout the summer and fall seasons. Two All-American rose selections, the White Bouquet of 1957, and the Starfire of 1950, are among the choicest varieties to be viewed currently at the gardens. White Bouquet is a floribunda rose, described as a sparkling white with gardenia-like blooms, possessing a spicy fragrance. The Starfire is a grandiflora type, which grows somewhat taller than ordinary bush roses and blooms similarly to floribunda roses. Its color is a glowing currant-red, distinctively fluorescent. Others Featured Other featured Descanso roses are Carrousel and Sutter's Gold. Carrousel is a grandiflora with bright sunfast red flowers of fine form. Sutter's Gold, an A.A.R.S. winner for 1950, has yellow flowers, shaded orange-red. Bird population at Descanso Gardens soon will reach its peak. Robert Banghart, chief of Descanso's information section, will conduct weekly bird walks each Sunday morning through the remainder of April and all of May. The walks will begin April 26, at 8:30 a.m. Among the birds now at Descanso Gardens are Bullock's oriole, Western Tanager, numerous warblers, vireas, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers. Waterfowl along the stream and lakes are treated merganser and the Descanso Gardens is located 1418 Descanso Dr. La Canada.
