Seventh Annual Tournament of Champions — third to be sent our way by NBC — pitts onto your living room screen at 3 p.m. Sunday. TV coverage includes play on the 17th and 18th holes of the final round at the Desert Inn Country Club in Las Vegas. A 275 stroke record for the 72 was set last year by Stan Leonard. Previous winners were: Gene Littler (1957-56-55); Art Wall (1954); and Al Bessemlink, who copped the initial session in 1953. This is about the only golf classic on the circuit where everyone wins — each qualifier pockets a grand for the four - day stay as well as wines and dines on the house. The big winner gets his picture taken with a wheelbarrow full of the famous "cart-wheels", but actually slips a check for ten-grand into his bill fold. Bell Bennington, NBC's ace Western sports director, has lined up four large, telescopic - lens cameras to be mounted at strategic spots atop 20 to 50 - foot steel towers. A small, ground-level portable will capture the climactic play on the 18th and final green. Chick Hearn and Braven Dyer, who turned in a fine job last year, will call the shots for us from a platform near the sand trap on the southside of the 18th. Briefly, here's the lay on the final two to play: No. 17 — 400 yards, par four. Water hazards to the right and left at 200 out which usually catch all sliced or hooked tee shots. . . No. 18 — 407 yards, par four. Water hazard on right. Big green, trapped both sides. On the local front, KTTV cameras move out to the San Bernardino Nat'l Orange Show Friday. Water skiing by Marth Ann Williams and other stars hi-light a full hour from the new Sports Marina lagoon, 300-feet long and 164 feet wide. Specially constructed for this show, the lagoon holds a million and a half gallons of water and contains 40 regulation Olympic - size swimming lanes. USC began spring football practice this week. If it weren't for track, they would have letterman starters in every position, two deep in four slots. ... sure hope the coaches at SC and UCLA get lined up with a good TV show this year — we missed that last year. Two years ago, this column went out on a limb and predicted SC would be national champs in 1960. Highlight of the grand opening program will be the appearance many of the southland's top fight figures. Both current and past national fight names will be present to kick off the Academy teams with a free program of workouts and exhibitions from 1 to 7 pm. Open to the public, Sunday's opening will usher a new era of boxing into Orange County following an absence of far too many years. Officially sanctioned Officially sanctioned by the AU, the Academy is the third such amateur training ground to open in Southern California in the last few months. Failure of Southland boxers to make much of a showing in Golden Glove and similar national championships in the past few years is credited for the resurgence of operations like the new Santa Ana Academy. Run by three long time Orange Counties, Louis and E. (Zeke) Rico and Bob Beniyez, the Academy is designed to fulfill a twofold purpose. It will be both a school and a training gym. Boxing classes will be offered both for recreation and the road to the development of self confidence and the art of self defense. Both amateur fighters and interest in novices are among those currently receiving instructions. In addition In addition to the instructional part of the operation, the academy will serve as a training camp for the area's amateur and professional fighters. To showcase its program, the gym will also sponsor semi-monthly amateur fights in the 900 seat Santa Ana National Guard Armory. Scheduled to begin May 6, and continue on every other Wednesday. Upset Winner, Williams In Golf Encounter LOS ANGELES (UPI)—Upset winner Trudy Keel, 25, goes against medalist Barbara Williams, 20, today in the semifinals. Day night, the fights will feature teams of amateurs from other fight clubs from both California, out of state and amateur teams from Mexico. Academy hours will be from 12 to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays, 9 to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Spartans Nip Marshall, 7-2 Combining a sterling pitching performance by Ron Yett and an eight hit attack, the Brookhurst Spartans snapped a three game losing streak and captured their initial win of the season. Coach Al Ashley's nine downed the visiting Marshall Mustangs, 7-2. The Spartans had previously dropped a 6-3 decision to Fremont of Pomona and two losses to the Western Frosh, 7-2 and 7-5. Yett tossed a nifty one-hitter at the Pomona boys, holding the losers hitless and scoreless until the seventh inning. Only two enemy batsmen had reached base prior to that time, both getting life on errors. In the seventh the portside slinger gave up his only walk, the only hit, (a triple), and the only runs. Fifteen Hosses went back to the bench muttering to themselves after striking out. The first eight Pomona batters in the ball game were fanned by the stylish lefthander. The winning locals moved off to a fast start in the first inning when Dave Bell walked and scored ahead of the busy Mr. Yett, who smashed a long home run. With two outs, Mike Birney and Mel Lofquist walked and Charlie Aguinaga singled another run across. More Runs Four more runs poured across the dish in the sixth as the Green and White iceed the game. Birney led off with a triple and scored on Aguinaga's third straight hit. Wes Quish and Brad Ralston walked and with two outs, Yett and Red Winn singled to finish the scoring for the Spartans. In the four games played so far this season, Yett has collected 7 hits in 13 trips to the plate, two of the hits being triples and one homer. The next appearance for the Ashleymen will be tomorrow when they invade the AUHS campus to tangle with the Sophomores. Norman Letcher, a night school student at Santa Ana JC, serves as gym manager and instructor, assisted in the instruction department by Jess Elizalde. Letcher, a former Golden Glovener, has a 9-1 pro fight record after piling up a 41-4 amateur string. Refreshments are to be provided at Sunday's opening and all Orange County fans are invited. The Academy is located in Santa Ana at 204½ E. 4th St. Time Extension Soon For Quarter Horse Meets SACRAMENTO (UPI)—Legislation to extend California's quarter horse racing season by 16 days each year has passed its first committee hurdle in the Assembly. The Government Organizations Committee Tuesday approved the bill by Assemblyman Richard Hanna (D Garden Grove) which would permit 50 days of quarter horse racing in both Northern and Southern California. Present law permits 42 days of such racing in each half of the state. However, harness and Thoroughbred racing get 50 days each in each half of the state. NFL Club Owners Meet For Pension Discussion PHILADELPHIA (UPI)—How to raise 30 million dollars was the question today as the National Football League Players Association and the club owners met here to discuss a pension plan for the gridders. The figure experts think it would take the 30 million to finance what the players want — $100 a month at the age of 65 for players with five years of service in the league. The sum is arrived at as the amount needed 30 years from now just about the time the league's older players would meet the proposed pension age. How that amount can be raised is the crux of the special league meeting which was expected to run through Friday. RACING APR. 10-MAY 6 POST TIME 1:20 P.M. SATURDAY 11:50 P.M.
