'Pop' Dunkle Directs New Square Dancers
The Penny Squares, a newly formed group of square dance enthusiasts of all ages, meets each Tuesday evening from 8 to 10:30 at La Palma Dance Studio, 117A W. La Palma. The group is directed by Frank D. (Pop) Dunkle, recognized as a national authority on square dancing.
Dunkle, who says he expects he has called as many dances in many states as anybody, has formed the club because of popular demand rising out of the current trend toward reviving old-time dancing.
"Pop" Dunkle, an accountant with Rees, Cummings, and Dunkle, started his square dance calling back in 1914. He is a charter member of the Compton Caller's Swap-Shop, the National Federation of Square Dance Callers.

heard by an American radio audience in December, 1928. Speaking over the airwaves at that time, Harvey S. Firestone said he hoped the Voice of Firestone would be "a wholesome feature in your household." The Firestone company has jealously guarded the quality of this program though its many years on the air and continued the intent of its founder by programming the best in musical entertainment through its long years on radio and television.
The June 1 telecast of the Voice of Firestone writes the finale to one of America's outstanding television programs and, as a Firestone spokesman stated, "we deeply regret that we have been forced to discontinue the Voice of Firestone because we sincerely believe TV viewers have appreciated quality programming and have looked forward to our half hour of music with great pleasure. Apparently, the American Broadcasting Company which has carried the Voice of Firestone for the past five years does not agree with our opinion."

Weekly book listings and library events, presented by the Anaheim Public Library, 241 S. Los Angeles St. in Anaheim, offer variety in reading interest.
Non Fiction
THE BIG RED SCHOOLHOUSE, by Fred M. Hechiager (Double-day). Here is a good resume of the American vs. Russian educational systems, their merits and demerits, and a description of education in Germany and France. The book contains plenty of quotes and citations to periodicals and covers all the important points in the present debate.
EDUCATION AND FREEDOM, by Admiral H. G. Rickover (Dutton). This book appears to be a classic statement of the "tough" side of a current educational controversy. He touches on the items of child-centered vs. subject-centered, expert vs. lay, elective vs. compulsory curriculum etc., and an excellent general history of education in the Western World.
THE CROWN AND THE CROSS, by Frank Slaughter (World). This book is a 446 page story of the life of Christ. Each chapter opens with a selection from the gospels which set the theme for the chapters that they head. The author gives us much background with the touch of a novelist. He puts all the elements together and gives us a good readable picture of Christ.
DESEGREGATION, by Melvin M. Turnin (Princeton). The author studied a small sample of people from one Southern county. The book is scientific in nature, complete with charts and graphs; but it contains two key chapters on leadership and major findings that would be very interesting reading indeed for the average reader. Contains quotes and some technical material of interest to pollsters who are interested in the methods used in the study.
FREEDOM, by Wilma Patchford Hays (Coward-McCann). If you have a big lantern type projector, these photostat plates may be projected on a screen for this book contains 28 documents of American history in photostatic plates. First there is included a page of explanation and then a reproduction of the document on the opposite page. They cover the period 1945 back to 1776 and include the Bill of Rights, letters of presidents, agreements, memos that were significant in American history.
GHOST DANCE, by David Miller (Duell). The Indian "dreamers" borrowed the white man's doctrine of the coming Messiah, and started an uprising that ended pathetically at the battle of Wound-
ed Knee in the 1890s able book because the interviewed living ppt that drama and is adopted son of an India is regarded as a king.

ed Knee in the 1890's. It is a valuable book because the author has interviewed living participants of that drama and is himself an adopted son of an Indian, and thus is regarded as a kinsman.
MY FIRST TEN YEARS IN ALASKA, by James A. Carroll (Exposition Press). This is the author's story of his life in Alaska. It contains a lot of humor and good conversation plus some snapshots. A true story of wilderness life at the turn of the century.
STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS, by Gerald Capers (Little Brown). A story of the "Little Giant" who was Lincoln's political opponent in the famous debates. This book relates in detail the Arabian Nights story of a man who was a Supreme Court judge at 28 and a Congressman while yet in his early 30's. He died while yet in his youth and just before the Civil War in 1861. Would history have changed if he had lived? This book covers this point and many others. This book is good reading.
SOUTHERN HERITAGE, by James McBride Dabbs (Knopf). The author was born and raised in the South and writes about it, past, present, and future, about its way of life, and of course about segregation. He writes in the quiet easy manner of one who is thoroughly familiar with his subject.
Good analysis of the state of general confusion existing today in the minds of the people of his beloved South.
CHANTICLEER, AND THE FOX, by Barbara Cooney, (Crowell). This book is the Caldecott award winner for the year. This medal is presented yearly to the artist whose picture book is judged the best for the year. The classic story of Chanticleer as told by Chaucer in Canterbury Tales is here retold with the author's beautiful illustrations showing the proud Chanticleer and what happened to him. Suitable for children in the grades.
Library Events
Next week's display will feature the Audubon Society's display on nature. Remember May 6th at 10:15 a.m. at the Anaheim Public Library, when Mrs. Scarborough will present her book review program, the last in the current series.
