I'll Handel This
By LEONARD R. HANDEL
(Bulletin Sports Editor)
Sports from here and there:
NUTT WILL STAY
Orange High School football fans are breathing a bit easier now that head grid coach Grover Nutt has decided to stay on at the Panther campus.
Earlier the OHS mentor had been named as one of the top contenders for the head grid spot in Garden Grove, but the deal fell through when it was decided by Union High School officials to make the athletic director's post and football position two separate jobs.
The story goes that Nutt wanted both or none at all — so he will remain at Orange.
Actually, Grover has a fairly bright future in the Plaza City.
He managed to bring to Orange their first championship in many years and although they were defeated by Mater Dei in their first California Interscholastic Federation play-off game, the outlook is still good.
Nutt had said earlier that he would not go to another school unless he was of the opinion that he was bettering himself.
Evidently, the Grove post in his opinion was not it.
COLONISTS REST
Coach John Wallin's Colonists will rest until Thursday when they meet rugged Huntington Beach High on the Oilers' diamond.
This figures to be a real good scrap as although the locals defeat-ed Huntington in the La Habra Kiwanis Tournament that ball club is improving with each game and it took a last-gasp rally for Anaheim to win the first one.
So, this battle should be a right good one.
Better go.
WESTERN NOTE
A coach to replace Mike Sgobba, who will now go to Garden Grove High School as their head baseball coach has not been named.
Three are supposedly in the running with none being local products.
Should be interesting to see just who will be picked.
FREMONT SCENE
Naming of Ezra Van Horn to a coaching position at Fremont Junior High School is a fine step forward for that campus.
Van Horn is one of the greatest basketball players to come out of the Orange school, which specializes in topflight talent.
Looks as though things are looking up in all local sports endeavors.
Which is a good deal for all concerned.
HEADPIN TOURNAMENT
Anaheim's Junior Chamber of Commerce is presently sponsoring a Headpin Tournament at WonderBowl for all JayCees in the state.
Under the direction of project chairman Bob Patrick the affair should be a right interesting one.
A Tourney of this kind calls for the rolling of just one ball per frame, with a full game consisting of 12 frames.
In order to make your pin count valid, the headpin must be

It’s not as simple as it sounds.
GREEN BAY TO TRAIN
Orange County football fans will receive a big break this coming season when the Green Bay Packers prepare for their Los Angeles Ram tussle at La Palma Stadium.
Grid fans will be able to watch the pros go through their paces right in the local area which should draw a good deal of interest.
Such an opportunity does not come every day.
DODGER NOTE
Your Los Angeles Dodgers have taken a major step in the right direction with an innovation on the scoreboard and program.
In years gone by, when a strange or different play occurred, friend fan was left out in the “dark” unless he was equipped with a radio.
However, the Dodgers have now set up on the scoreboard a spot for a “Play Number.”
In the event of a peculiar happening a number is flashed on the scoreboard telling what has happened.
Last Friday evening when the Dodgers lost to Chicago’s Cubs a visiting batter was awarded first base for no apparent reason.
However, shortly after taking a quick look in the program, that the Dodger hurler had delivered an “illegal pitch.”
Under baseball rules which means that if the bases are unoccupied it is a ball or if there are runners on the pillows it would be a balk.
Therefore, fans were aware of what had happened and that much more enjoyment was derived from the game.
A real good deal.
Credit for this goes to Fresco Thompson, Dodger vice president and Director of Minor League operations.
KNOWLES PLAYING
Irv Knowles, former Anaheim Colonist baseball flash, is now playing for Reno of the California League.
He has cracked a starting berth and has received fine praise for his efforts.
Reno is in the Dodger chain.

Pioneers to In Crucial
LA HABKA — Coach Roy Merk's Western Pioneers, the junior partners of the Freeway League, will meet Loop topping La Habra High School on the Highlander's diamond tomorrow.
Gametime is set for 3:15 with a good turnout of local fans expected to make the long journey to La Habra.
Western, playing without a single senior, haye been the major surprise of the current Freeway campaign and it is hoped that they will be able to continue in this pace during tomorrow's tussle.
The ball game could easily go a long way towards deciding which club will capture the Circuit title.
Lead Loop
Coach Pat O'Donnell's Highlanders are leading the Loop, but the Westerners are right behind them and a win tomorrow would tie the Circuit into a two-way knot for leadership.
Western, with a 4-2 record, will be facing a Highlander team which has lost just one game, this being a 2-1 setback to the Pioneers.
That game was played at La Palma Stadium, with Dennis Painter earning the victory.
Merk reports that it will be Painter again tomorrow, which means that the La Habrans will have to be on their best effort if they are to earn their first win of the year against the spirited Westerners.
Barnett Hurls
Expected to assume mound duties for the La Habra pitch.
TEALS — Wally Moon slides into base as the throw from Chicago Cub catcher Neeman to Alvin Dark was wide. Cubarius Hillman (C) was the losing pitcher after the Dodgers snapped out of a 3-3 tie and scored five runs in the eighth inning. Montreal Celebrating 'Sweetest Win of All'
By DICK BACON
United Press International
MONTREAL (UPI) — The Montreal Canadiens, hockey's most powerful and colorful exponents, reigned as world champions for the fourth consecutive year today and Coach Toe Blake called it "sweetest one of them all."
The Canadians, playing without their two brighest stars-Maurice (Rocket) Richard and Jean Belleau — wrapped up an unprecedented fourth straight Stanley Cup championship Saturday night, defeating the game but "second-best" Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-3. It took the Canadiens just five games of the best-of-seven series to clinch the title.
Paced by Bernie (Boom-Boom) Geoffrion's two goals and one by his rookie linemate, Ralph Backstrom, the habitants jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and then increased the margin to 5-1 after two periods.
The vallant Leafs, struggling desperately to avert elimination, saved the finale from being a dull affair with a furious last period onslaught. They scored twice to narrow the score to 5-3 and then threw six forwards at the habitants in the final 2:33 in a vain but dramatic climax to the series.
"This has to be the greatest team yet," said Blake, obviously moved by the showing of his hustling heroes. "We had to do it the hard way—without the big guys."

has lost just one game, this being a 2-1 setback to the Pioneers.
That game was played at La Palma Stadium, with Dennis Painter earning the victory.
Merk reports that it will be Painter again tomorrow, which means that the La Habrans will have to be on their best effort if they are to earn their first win of the year against the spirited Westermers.
Barnett Hurls
Expected to assume mound duties for the La Habra nine tomorrow is Mike Barnett, the top man on the Highlander hurling totem pole.
Barnett was not on the mound in the last meeting, as the Ploneers defeated Mike Berzins.
In that fray the Ploneers fought all the way and were forced to fight until the final out before snaring their decision.
Merk, looking towards tomorrow's crucial, sald; "We must defeat La Habra if we hope to remain near the top of League standings."
He said further that the Highlanders have been defeated only once in Freeway play, this by his ball club, and for this reason the La Habrans will be hoping to reverse the decision.
O'Donnell's charges have been unleashing a heavy hitting attack in games gone by as they massacred both Rancho Alamitos and Buena Park.
Interesting Problem
The locals are facing a rather interesting problem as the Rancho team defeated Western in their last outing, with this defeat coming right after the Vaqueros were
NFL Eyes Pension Plan At Special Meeting
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) — The National Football League and its player association are expected to agree on a pension plan — or a system similar to one — at a special meeting beginning Thursday.
The association is asking a $125 a month pension at the age of 65 for players with five years service in the league.
Two factors apparently have brought the owners and players close to agreement on the matter. They are:
— A masterful presentation by Bill Dudley, an all-time league halfback great who presented figures supporting the plan at the regular January meeting.
— Emphasis by the association through its president, star offensive end Bill Howton of the Green Bay Packers, that it would not
Bernard Bartzen Wins First Tennis Title
HOUSTON, Tex. (UPI)—Bernard (Tut) Bartzen of Dallas owned his first River Oaks Tennis Championship today and he could credit good physical condition as playing a big part in his victory.
His opponent in Sunday's final, Dick Savitt of New York, became so exhausted under a hot sun and in the high humidity that he had to default in the fourth set. The match went into the record books by the scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, 2-0, default.
Savitt was scheduled to team with Billy Talbert of New York in the doubles finals against Luis Ayala of Chile and Jaroslav Drobny of England, but Salem also had to default in this match.
Savitt said he got glazy in the clubhouse during the intermission. He apologized to the crowd for having to quit but paid tribute to Bartzen's play.
RAIN POSTPONES RACE
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (UPI) — The Virginia 500 Grand National stock car race, washed out Sunday because of drenching rains, will be held here May 3.

New York — Parry O'Brien won six straight national AAU shot put titles indoors.
Hershey Bears Even In Buffalo Series
United Press International
The Hershey Bears are all even in their American Hockey League final play-off series with the Buffalo Bisons, thanks to the nifty netminding of Bobby Perrault.
Perrault, who led the AHL in the regular season with six shutouts, whitewashed the Bison's, 2-0, at Buffalo Saturday night. Hershey's goals were scored by Hec Lalande in the first period and Bob Solinger in the third stanza.
The third game of the series will be played at Hershey Wednesday night.
L.A. State College Captures Track Victory
LONG BEACH (UPI)—Los Angeles State College scored an easy win in a triangular track meet Saturday over San Diego State and Long Beach State.
Diablo broad jump star, Joe Wiley set a new meet record of 24 feet, 11 inches, and also took a first in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches.
Los Angeles racked up 78 points against 60% by San Diego and 22½ by Long Beach.
San Francisco Giants Down to Legal Limit
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — The San Francisco Giants were down to their legal limit of 25 players today after pitchers Curt Barclay and Billy Muffett were sold out-right to the team's Phoenix farm club in the Pacific Coast League.
Each had pitched only one-third of an innning for the varsity this year. Both were hit hard during an 11-3 pasting by the Cubs.
"It will give them a chance to work steadily down there," Manager Bill Rigney said Sunday. "They don't get a chance to do very much now with the way our pitching shapes up."
Barclay was an established hurler with the New York Giants in 1987 and was 12-8 with Phoenix last year. Muffett came to the Giants in a trade that also brought catcher Hobie Landrith to San Francisco and sent pitchers Ernie Broglio and Mary Grishom to St. Louis.

a team which figures to have a good attack, the Highlanders must also be ready for a maximum effort.
In such men as Dave Sturrock,
Marty Serlin, Butch Barthel, Flavo German, Ben Fischer and Tim McManus, the Pioneers have a number of lads who are always dangerous.
Painter, too, is a good hitting pitcher, and has proved this ability when he assumes first base dutles on days when he isn't pitching.
In La Habra the Pioneers will be testing the ability of lads who have risen to the top of Circuit competition.
Expected to give them the most trouble are such men as Billy Morris, Skip Blair, Ed Molina, Dennis Manning, Doug Camphuls and Gary Haines.
Camphuls is the Highlander catcher and one of the better hitters on the squad.
A close contest is expected.
It’s Now or Never
For Mater Dei Nine
By BOB LUSKEY
Faced by the never easily solved problem of having to win every game from now or else suffer the consequences, Mater Del's Monarchs will face their busiest and most crucial five days of baseball action this week when the Orange Countians play host to San Gabriel Mission, Mary Star of the Sea and St. Paul's.

Major Relays Set Saturday
United Press International
Two world record sprint races, one of which won't be submitted for official recognition because of too much wind, helped set the track and field stage today for the important Penn and Drake relays week end.
Ray Norton of San Jose State, rapidly gaining stature as an Olympic hope for next year, equalled the world mark of 10.1 seconds for 100 meters in a triangular meet Saturday at San Jose, Calif., and he says he now feels he's "ready for my fastest races."
Bill Woodhouse, often unjustly overlooked as a teammate of Olympic champ Bobby Morrow at Abilene Christian College, elapsed the world record for 100 yards at Abilene, Tex., Saturday by clocking 9.1 seconds.
However, Woodhouse's performance — which bettered the official mark of 9.3 seconds — won't be offered as a record because of an excessive tailwind.
Norton's 100 meter mark, however, will be submitted. The San Jose speedster already shares the 100 yard record.
The two sprint stars dominated a brilliant week end of activity which also saw the University of Kansas hold sway in the Kansas Relays as it did in the Texas Relays two weeks ago, Dave Mills star in the Ohio Relays at Columbus, Ohio, and Yale University take the team title in the Queens-Iona Relays in New York.
Top results in all these meets indicated the track and field brigade will be at its peak for the Penn Relays on Friday and Saturday in Philadelphia and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on the same days. The two carnivals annually share the cream of the nation's collegiate track crop and produce some of the best competition of the outdoor season.

All three crucial Parochial League frays are slated for Santa Ana's Memorial Park and the Monarchs must win each one to remain alive in the rapidly maturing pennant race.
The local forces are presently holders of a five win and two loss mark in league play with only five more loop contests to go.
Mater Del has beaten St. John Vianney twice 6 to 0 and 1 to 0, San Gabriel Mission 8 to 4, Pomona Catholic 10 to 4, and St. Francis 12 to 1 while bowing to St. Paul's 4 to 2 and Mary Star 7 to 4 in conference competition.
Out of League the Monarchs have belted Orange 16 to 1, Laguna Beach 21 to 0, St. Anthony's 11 to 3, Garden Grove 4 to 2, Brea-Olinda 7 to 0, and the Orange Coast College JV's 4 to 3. The Orange Countians' only non-league losses came from Huntington Beach twice 8 to 0 and 8 to 4, and Garden Grove 5 to 4, thus giving the locals an over-all seasonal record of 11 wins and five setbacks.
Tough Foes
As for this week's three biggies, Coach Pat Roberts unspecified "nine" will be taming with two teams that have already beaten them and the third club, Mission, gave the Monarchs all sorts of trouble before the Red and Grey could subdue them.
When St. Paul's downed the Monarchs 4 to 2 in the first round of Parochial League warfare the locals were weakened to a great extent by an attack of the flu and when the Stars beat MD last Friday 7 to 4 the Monarchs outit their opposition 10 to 6, but left men on the base paths in every inning while the San Pedro squad made their hits count.
Score Fast
In the Mater Del-Mission battle in the first round of loop play the Monarchs scored fast and soon, but had to hold off a late innning rally by the Pioneers to come out alive 8 to 4.
The big trouble with the Mater Del team of late has been that the Monarchs have been playing inconsistent baseball. One day they will rise up to the heights of beating defending Orange League champion Laguna Beach 21 to 0 and then on the following day lose to a supposedly sockless St. Paul team 4 to 2.
Such usually steady Monarch fielders as second baseman Paul Gentleman and first baseman Warren Harm have made all too many defensive misques in the past few games and if a general improvement does not come about and soon the Monarchs will end up just as...
