Dodgers Beat Chicago, 8-1 Meet Giants at Coliseum
LOS ANGELES — Exploding for five big runs in the eighth inning, Los Angeles’ Dodgers defeated Chicago’s Cubs, 8-3 before a crowd of 29,663 Memorial Coliseum fans, yesterday.
The win gave Manager Walter Alston’s charges a record of five wins in eight National League starts, a mark they hope to improve upon when they meet Willie Mays and Company, the San Francisco Giants, tonight.
Gametime is slated for 8 p.m. with upwards of 50,000 fans expected for the tussle.
Yesterday’s game saw Dodger starting and winning pitcher, Johnny Podres, run head first into a hurricane in the first inning as the Windy City lads blew up a three run rally which threatened to “ice” the decision before many fans had fought their way through the interchange.
Tony Taylor started things off by cracking a single into right-center-field. He went to second on a single by Alvin Dark and the bases became loaded seconds later when Lee Walls walked.
Dangerous Ernie Banks lofted a long fly ball to deep right field and Taylor scored after the catch.
Another Run
Dark moved to third on the play, from which point he scored a moment later when Wally Moryn skied to right.
With Bob Averill at the plate Podres uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Walls to scoot to second.
Averill then cracked a ground ball to third baseman Jim Baxes, who promptly threw the ball past first baseman Norm Larker, allowing Walls, who had been running over, the Dodgers had acquired five runs, on an equal number of hits.
The 12-safe blows acquired by the Dodgers was their high for the season.
Thus far in their first stand they have won four two.
They dropped the opener St. Louis and the Cubs and came back to win the next
Easy - Going Julius Boros Faces Jackie Burke in Houston Classic
HOUSTON, Tex. (UPI) — Easy-going Julius Boros, a Conn Yankee now living in Florida and playing out of North Carolina comeback specialist Jackie Burke Jr., today is an 18-hole play top money in the Houston Classic golf tournament.
The two strongmen both overcame front-running Arnold er in Saturday’s final round of the $30,000 Classic at Memorial Park to end up in a tie for first place with 11-under-par 277s.
Palmer, who had been co-favored with Cary Middlecoff to win this 12th annual event, faded during the final 27 holes to end up in a tie for third place with Mike Souchak of Grossinger, N.Y., with a 278. The third-place tie netted Souchak and Palmer $1,850 each.
Today’s play-off was the first of the current season, and only the second for the Houston Classic since it was started in 1947.
Palmer’s bogey five on Sunday’s 18th and final hole may have cost him as much as $2,450. He came into the 18th at even par for the day and another par for the hole would have put him in a three-way tie for first and another chance at the $4,300 top money. Second-place money is $3,000.
The Ligonier, Pa., long-hitter drove his second shot six feet back.
long fly ball to deep right field and Taylor scored after the catch.
Another Run
Dark moved to third on the play, from which point he scored a moment later when Wally Moryn skied to right.
With Bob Averill at the plate Podres uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Walls to scoot to second.
Averill then cracked a ground ball to third baseman Jim Baxes, who promptly threw the ball past first baseman Norm Larker, allowing Walls, who had been running with two down, to score.
That was all for the rally, though, as Bobby Thompson, hero of the 1951 New York Giants, flew to right.
However, the Cubs were leading 8-0 and it appeared that it was going to be a long afternoon for the partisan crowd.
At this point, though, the Dodgers started to fight back.
Wally Moon, singled to lead off the inning.
He went to second on a walk to Johnny Roschore and after Duke Snider, the "Fallbrook Fallout", fanned, Don Demeter blasted a gingle into centerfield, scoring Moon with the first Los Angeles run.
The locals made it 3-2 in the bottom of the third when Snider, who had been having trouble getting on base, cracked a towering 350-foot home run into the center field seats.
He was given a rousing burst of applause by the week end turnout.
Buoyed by their resurgent powers, the Dodgers knotted the count in the last of the fifth when with one out Demeter was safe on the shotstop's boot.
He went to second as Larker was retired by the first baseman unassisted, and came romping home when Charlie Neal singled.
There it stood until the last of the eighth when the Dodgers broke the game wide open.
With Podres and Cub starting pitcher, Bob Hillman locked in the 3-3 deadlock. Neal started the ball rolling with a single.
He was sacrificed to second by Don Zimmer, but then Hillman ran into a spot of control trouble and succeeded in walking Baxes.
That was all for Hillman and Cub Manager, Bob Scheffling elected to call in Bob Martin to do the hurling for Chicago.
Two Batters
He pitched to just two batters, but before he had completed the chore it was an entirely different ball game.
Martin, facing Podres, walked the Dodger twirler to load the sacks and up stepped Moon.
Wally, took a ball, and then shot a single into left field which scored both Neal and Baxes.

Wally, took a ball, and then shot a single into left field which scored both Neal and Baxes.
On the play Podres went to third.
This started an object lesson in baseball strategy as Alston then sent Carl Furillo in to hit for Roseboro.
Before he could take his swings, though, Scheffling pulled Martin and brought in Bill Elston.
Walter, being no "slouch" at making with the strategy himself, promptly replaced Furillo with Junior Gilliam, who just as quickly slashed a single into centerfield, scoring Podres and sending Moon to second.
Snider then joined the "hit parade" when he blasted a single into right-centerfield which scored both Moon and Gilliam.
Both had been running on the pitch and when Duke hit safely each base runner was able to go dashing plateward.
However, Snider, who tried to take second on the throw to the plate, was cut down on a good throw from Dick Neeman to second sacker Taylor.
Larker then bounced to third to end the inning.
However, before the frame was

Orlando Cepeda Laughs at 'Jinx'
United Press International
Laugh when you mention the "sophomore jinx" because that's what Orlando Cepeda and the San Francisco Giants are doing.
Cepeda, the National League "rookie of the year" last season, certainly can afford to giggle with a cool .285 batting mark and a red-hot hitting streak of nine straight games.
So can the Giants, now on the threshold of first place and making a legitimate pitch at the pennant in their second year at San Francisco.
The Giants climbed into a virtual tie for the lead with the Braves when they beat the Cardinals, 3-1, Sunday. Southpaw Johnny Antonelli subdued St. Louis on eight hits for his third straight victory. Cepeda started Bill Rigney's crew on their way to victory when he doubled off loser Larry Jackson in the second inning and rode home on Felipe Alou's single. He added a single later in the game. Willie Mays drove in two of the Giants' runs. Cincinnati poured it on for a 12-5 win over Philadelphia while Los Angeles walloped Chicago, 8-3. The Milwaukee-Pittsburgh game was postponed because of cold weather.
In the American League, Kansas City handed Cleveland its first defeat of the season after six straight victories, 4-3, but the Indians still retained first place. The Red Sox scored a 5-4 decision over the Yankees in 12 innings and the Orioles and Senators split a doubleheader. Baltimore winning the opener, 7-5, and Winston taking the nightcap, Cold weather caused postment of the Detroit-Chicago game. Frank Robinson slammed third homer and drove in runs as the Reds mauled Phils. Cincinnati put together four-run rallies.
Pinch-hitter Zeke Bella of sas City was the man who Cleveland's victory bubble came through with a ninth-high with the bases loaded Herb Score, who had held the scoreless until they came up four runs in the ninth.

Dick Linder, Top Ranked Driver
Killed in Crash of Vargo Special
TRENTON, N.J. (UPI) — Dick
Linder, eighth-ranked racing driver
in the East, was killed Sunday
when his Vargo Special roared
through a Trenton Speedway railing and down an embankment as he tried to avoid a crash.
Linder, 36, of 223 Outlook St.,
Pittsburgh, Pa., crashed in the
8th lap of the 100-mile United
States Auto Club pational championship race before an estimated
12,000 racing fans.
The crash was witnessed by
Linder's pregnant wife, Carol, and
sister, Alice, both of Pittsburgh.
It occurred at 3:15 p.m., about a
quarter-mile from the nearest
spectators.
Alice Linder phoned the news to
Linder's brother, Gus, who was
competing in a feature race event
at Pittsburgh's South Park track.
Gus took the wheel despite the
news of his brother's death, but
was involved in a minor accident
and did not complete the race.
Jim Rathman, of Miami, had
signalled Don Branson of Urbana,
Ill., to pass him, but Branson's
car crashed into the rear of Rathman's racer and spun on the asphalt track.
Linder, trailing Branson at
about 85 miles an hour on the
turn tried to squeeze between
Branson and the fence. But his
$25,000 Vargo Special ran over the
front of Branson's car, ripped
through the railing and down an
embankment.
Linder was dead on arrival at
St. Francis Hospital here. Hospital officials said he suffered a broken neck and internal injuries.
