(Dulletin Photo) Dixie Cup Plans Plant Expansion An addition to its Anaheim plant that will cost upwards of $1,000,000 and increase space by almost 40 per cent was announced today by the Dixie Cup Division of American Can Company. The addition will total 112,500 square feet of manufacturing space, 21 per cent more than the present 93,000 square feet devoted to manufacturing. It will bring total plant footage — for manufacturing, warehousing, offices and other purposes — to nearly 200,000 square feet. C. L. Van Schalck, general manager of the Division, made the announcement in Easton, Pa., home of Dixie Cup's headquarters plant. He also disclosed that the Anaheim plant, when the new addition is completed late this year, will produce a broader line of Dixie Cups. The new addition will be attached to the east of the present building, which is at 901 E. South St. Present manufacturing space will be shifted over to warehousing. The new structure will be of tilt-up concrete slab construction, a technique in which the walls are poured on the ground and lifted into place. It will have a gypsum roof and will be completely air-conditioned. The general contractor, who already has begun work, is Myers Bros. Construction Company, Inc., Los Angeles. Air conditioning and plumbing will be installed under a joint contract by W. W. Price and Company, Glendale, and Scott Piping Company, Inc., North Hollywood. Arrow Electric, Anaheim will do the electrical work. Architects for the addition are Stiles and Robert Clements, Anaheim. The Dixie Cup Anaheim plant has been in operation since 1952. The new addition will be the second. The first was in 1957, when 75,000 square feet of warehouse area was added. Depressed Oil Value Affects School Fund By Orange County News Service Decreased tax revenue for areas of the county dependent upon oil revenue was predicted today by Hugh Plumb, county assessor. He said that the assessment upon mineral rights will show a drop during the coming year because of decreased production and lower prices for oil. The assessment on mineral rights, which is based upon a complex formula, totalled $107,000,000 last year. This figure represents about 10 per cent of the total assessed value of the county. Hardest hit by the decrease in mineral right assessments will the cities and school districts in American Legion Post Protests Hanna Resolution "Harold Daoust, Adjutant of the Anaheim American Legion Post has drawn up a resolution against the Assembly Constitutional Amendment No. 8, submitted by Assemblyman Richard Hannah of the 75th Assembly District which seeks to alter the existent Devering Loyalty Oath. According to the resolution, which was accepted by Anaheim Post 72 in session at a regular meeting, "The constitution of the State of California provides that all persons holding office or positions within the State Government and school systems must subscribe to the American Principles," and "Such American Principles are adequately expressed in the Levering Loyalty Oath." The Daoust resolution further states that Assembly Constitutional Amendment No. 8 seeks to "eliminate all references to loyalty both to the United States Constitution and the Constitution of the State of California." Copies of he resolution are being forwarded to the Department of California, the Governor, Speaker of the Legislature and the Board of Supervisors of Orange County. The Levering Oath was originally voted into existence by a four to one majority, and it is felt that Hanna's amendment is a betrayal of his constituent's wishes. the Huntington Beach and Fullerton area. In these two portions of the county, mineral rights represent much larger portion of the assessed value than in other areas. Income to cities and school districts is based upon the assessed value multiplied by the tax rate. Guard told OCNS today that three life jackets were close together floating in the waters five miles off of Avalon. A search of the area is under way. Coast guardsmen said it is unusual to find three floating loose in one area. No reports of distressed boats has been received within the last 24 hours in the area. A search is being launched, however. HONORED STUDENTS -- Eight valedictorians are shown here receiving congratulations from Anaheim Union High School principal Frank Kelogg (center). The Bulletin ORANGE COUNTY NEWS SECTION B Thursday, April 16, 1959 Cancer Crusade Ready For County Kickoff With most of the recruitment of volunteers already completed, Cancer Crusaders throughout Orange County are ready today to get the annual Crusade under way in earnest. Most communities plan to kickoff the neighbor-to-neighbor campaign tomorrow or Saturday, according to Miles Engle, county chairman of the Crusade. Two-fold purpose of the annual effort is to distribute life-saving literature and to solicit financial support for the cancer society's local and national programs. The society has a triple program of service, education and research. Service is the most local of the programs; it includes setup of lending libraries, visitation services and other programs administered by community units of the society. The Orange County Branch of the Society joins its 23 units throughout the county in operating a continuous education program of film showings, literature distribution, etc. Research is handled by the state division of ACS and by the national offices of the organization. The Cancer Crusade each year is a highlight of the month of April — designated coast to coast as Cancer Control Month by presidential decree and by local proclamations issued by governors and mayors. Persons in Orange Federal Tax Relief Bill Will Allow for Deductions Of Money Put Into Retirement Fund (Special to the Bulletin) NEW YORK — Self-employed people in Orange County — shop-keepers, farmers, professional workers and others — are about to get some Federal tax relief, it appears. They are to be allowed to make deductions, up to specified limits, for money they put away each year into their retirement or pension funds. Los Alamitos Gets 362 New Homes in Tract By Ornage County News Service Eight subdivisions, including one for 362 homes, have been approved by the County Board of Supervisors. The large tract, with 362 lots on 114 acres, lies on the north side of Garden Grove Blvd., west of Los Alamitos Blvd., in the Los Alamitos area. Three tracts have been authorized in Anaheim. A 24-home subdivision is planned for eight acres on both sides of Guinida Lane, in both directions from Iris St. Another 15 houses are to be built on five acres situated on both sides. The relief measure, which has cleared the House Ways and Means Committee, is expected to be passed by a big margin when it reaches the floor of the House shortly. It is conceded a good chance of getting Senate approval as well. The bill seeks to place self-employed workers on a par with the millions of other workers who pay no taxes on funds placed in pension pools for them. The number of self-employed in Orange County, who stand to benefit from the tax break, was set at 14,423 in the latest Census Bureau survey. They amounted to 19.6 per cent of the total number of people with jobs, a high proportion compared with the 17.1 per cent in other United States areas and the 15.8 per cent in the Pacific States. Locally, therefore, more of the working population is affected than is the case in other sections. The bill provides that any self-employed person may deduct from his taxable income as much as 10 per cent of his self-employment New Officers Elected For Anaheim JayGees Lee Morris, 35, of 1808 Cerrito, was elected Anaheim Junior Chamber of Commerce President at a club meeting in the Home Savings and Loan Building, last night. The jury, hearing the case in the court of Superior Judge Karl Lynn Davis, decided in favor of Russell E. Holland 13351 Cypress. The defendant, a Santa Ana cab driver at the time of the accident, William T. McKim, had alleged that Holland negligently crashed into the rear of his car as he drove down Main St. near 19th.
