Let’s Open Up Starting Gate
So Pirates, Detroit Can Get
By MILTON RICHMAN
United Press International
Please, somebody, open up that starting gate so poor Pittsburgh and Detroit can get out.
Here the season is only a week old and the Pirates and Tigers already have hit rock bottom with identical 0-5 records. If they don’t get a move on soon, you can put
Records Fall Like Clay Pigeons During ’59 Sportsmen’s Show
Records fell apart like clay pigeons during the 11-day run of the Los Angeles Sportsmen’s Vacation Show which ended its most successful run at Pan Pacific Auditorium.
Producer H. Werner Buck announced that more than 300,000 persons attended the huge recreational extravaganza, thereby top-ping all previous attendance marks of the 14-year-old spectacle.
Buck declared that in the first two and one-half hours of the last day of the show (April 12) more people passed through the turnstiles than during the full 10 hours of the show on the same date the previous year.
Is Best Yet
Exhibitors enthusiastically proclaimed this year’s as the best yet and reported record sales.
Besides the more than 600 exhibits which brought to the public thousands of sporting items and offered hundreds of services, the show this year was highlighted by the appearance of the fabulous Japanese Cormorants (wild birds trained to catch fish).
The appearance of the Cormorants in the “Parade of Outdoor Champions” was so over whelmingly accepted by the capacity crowds that daily witnessed the
78 Eligible For Maturity Go
A total of 78 current three-year-olds have been kept eligible for next winter’s 1900 running of the estimated $170,000 Santa Anita Maturity for four-year-olds.
Some fourteen of the Maturity eligibles have been nominated for all three “Triple Crown” events in 1939 — the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. Moreover, 13 other eligibles for the Maturity have been nominated for at least one of the classiq stakes for 3-year-olds.

Besides the more than 600 exhibits which brought to the public thousands of sporting items and offered hundreds of services, the show this year was highlighted by the appearance of the fabulous Japanese Cormorants (wild birds trained to catch fish).
The appearance of the Cormorants in the "Parade of Outdoor Champions" was so over whelmingly accepted by the capacity crowds that daily witnessed the show that Buck immediately announced that all efforts would be made to bring to future sportsmen's shows outstanding international acts from different parts of the world.
Boomerangs, Yet
Buck said that already he had been in contact with the government of Australia in an effort to bring to the United States for the first time the famous Aborigines and their spectacular boomerangs." He also indicated that efforts were underway to contract for appearances of the amazing spear throwers from the Philippine Islands, the fishermen net coasters from Samoa and the world's champion Mexican pistol team from Mexico City.
Although the boating, trailer, camping and fishing tackle sections of the show were as big as ever before, Buck declared that already plans were afoot to provide larger exhibits in these categories as well as the vacation portion which has taken on an international flavor with booths from as far north as Canada and Mexico.
The pattern of the show, which is designed to bring to the public the latest in outdoor equipment plus the best acts from the top sportsmen's shows in the country, Buck said, will continue the same. "We have always felt that this was a family type show where everyone from father to mother, big olds have been kept eligible for next winter's 1960 running of the estimated $170,000 Santa Anita Maturity for four-year-olds.
Some fourteen of the Maturity eligibles have been nominated for all three "Triple Crown" events in 1959 — the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. Moreover, 13 other eligibles for the Maturity have been nominated for at least one of the classic stakes for 3-year-olds.
Two outstanding Maturity nominees, which are also "Triple Crown" hopefuls, are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Turner, Jr.'s Tomy Lee and Brookfield Farm's Intentionally.
Tomy Lee won four stakes in 1958, including the Starlet Stakes at Hollywood and the Del Mar Futurity. Intentionally won three such events, including the Belmont Futurity and the Pimlico Futurity.
Other stakes-winners that are on the Maturity list are Charles Cohen's Crafty Skipper, Mr. and Mrs. L. I. Nelson's Linmold, the late Jacques Braunstein's Royal Orbit and W. M. Ingram's Scotland, as well as such place-winners in major events as King Ranch's Black Hills, Clalborne Farm's Dunce, Helbush Farm's Friar Roach, and C. V. Whitney's Jungle Dancer.
Supplementary nominations at $10,000 each will be permitted for the 1960 running of the Maturity. Such payments are due five days before the running. Last Year's Maturity winner, Hillsdale, was a supplementary nominee.
At present the gross purse for the Maturity amounts to $127,490, based on original subscriptions plus two series of eligibility payments. The next eligibility payment of $200 is due on Jan. 2, 1960.

Pittsburgh and Detroit can console themselves by recalling the 1951 Giants lost 11 in a row during April and still came on to win the pennant.
That isn't much consolation, though. Not when the Pirates remember they dropped their first eight games of the season in 1955 and finished last or when the Tigers think back to how they also wound up in the basement after losing their first eight games in 1952.
Cincinnati handed the Pirates their fifth straight loss, 10-5. Wednesday while unbeaten Cleveland stayed atop of the American League standings by dealing the Tigers their fifth consecutive setback, 2-1, in 10 innings.
Held's Homer Wins
The Yankees remained close at Cleveland's heels by beating Baltimore, 3-1, for their third straight triumph; the Athletics handed the White Sox their first loss of the campaign, 10-8, and the Red Sox beat the Senators, 7-3.
In the National League, the Dodgers licked the Cardinals, 5-0, and the Giants made it four out of five by defeating the Cubs, 7-1. The first-place Braves were idle, as were the Phillies.
Woodie Held's third homer in two days powered the Indians to their fourth straight victory in their 10-inning struggle with Detroit.

Rookie pitcher Jerry Casale was pretty much the whole show in Boston's win over Washington. The Brooklyn-born right-hander doled out seven hits and clouted a 450-foot homer far over the left field-screen with two on off loser Russ Kemmerer in the sixth.
Cepeda Homers Twice
The Reds had to battle from behind twice to down the Pirates. Cincinnati clinched the outcome with a five-run rally in the sixth inning during which Vada Pinson hit his second homer of the season with two on. Jerry Lynch and Ed Bailey also homered for the Reds while Don Hoak connected for a three-run homer for Pittsburgh. Joe Nuxhall, aided by Bob Mabe's scoreless three-inning relief stint, was the winner. Bob Friend gave up 11 of Cincinnati's 16 hits in 5 1-3 innings and was charged with his second loss in as many tries.
Don Drysdale of the Dodgers struck out seven and gave up eight hits in curbing the Cardinals. Loser Larry Jackson star-tled the crowd of 14,491 at Los Angeles Coliseum by striking out six of the first nine batters to face him, but the Dodgers put together four singles for two runs in the fourth. Don Demeter homered in the sixth and Jim Baxes in the seventh as the Carda suffered their fourth loss in five games.
Orlando Cepeda, "low-bridged" by Moe Drabowsky in the second inning, slammed a pair of homers off the Cub right-hander — one in the fourth and another in the fifth — to pace the Giants to their victory. Felipe Alou also homered for the Giants, raising his season total to three.
Southpaw Johnny Antonelli struck out six and yielded only five hits in gaining his second victory.

Teen Clouter In Olympic Go
Another of Mexico's fightin' sons makes his Olympic debut tonight when Alfredo (Alf) Urbina, a teen-age clouter from Acapulco, takes on dangerous Jimmy Hornsby in the 10-round main event.
In early wagering Urbina is listed as a 10-9 favorite over the former all-U.S. Army Airforce champion.
Although Hornsby lost his last two outings, he was in real tough, taking on two nationally ranked lightweights — Paulie Armstead and Baby Vasquez.
Against Vasquez at the Olympic, Hornsby put the Mexico champ on the carpet, but couldn't keep him there. It was a blistering battle all the way.
Hornsby will be making his 13th pro start against Urbina, Mexico's No. 1 contender for Baby Vasquez' title. Urbina went to post 18 times, stopping 11 of his rivals, including Ezequiel (Chicles) Uribe.
A good swatter with either hand, Urbina is rated a hot prospect, almost in the same category as Mauro Vazquez and Battling Torres.
Lupe Serrano, who pilots Mauro says Urbina is "a real good one".
Hornsby works at Lockheed in Burbank.
Next week it's Hilario Morales vs. Teddy "Red Top" Davis.
Popular prices prevail for both main events.

FAVORITE SPORT MEMOS
(With Dick Stoeffler)
What are your chances of bowling a perfect (300) game? The American Bowling Congress, from 1906 to 1952 listed 4,340 scores of 300, 2367 games 299, and 1,745 games of 298. Now then, you figure out how many games of keegling were bowled in that period of time!
A 300 game is truly a distinguished feat. When you consider the astronomical number of lines bowled daily, it would seem to me that a 300 is far more rare than a no-hitter, a hole in one or even a four-minute mile.
To achieve this lofty score, it takes 12 consecutive strikes. What goes through a person's mind when they reach 10...then 11? What happens to your legs...your complete co-ordination system?
I have seen amazing reactions. One bowler nearly collapsed after his twelfth strike, yet his composure was perfect until ten pins fell on his last try. I have seen bowlers get a five or six pin count to end up with a 295 or 296. To accomplish this in league play is a thrill I've never experienced, although we had a 300 in a match game. It is much tougher to roll a perfect game in league since you bowl at a slower pace.
If you have never bowled...even one-in-a-row is thrill.
Come by and see us at Anaheim's friendliest bowling center...LINBROOK.BOWL, open 24 hours a day, completely air conditioned (additional air conditioning now being installed), with Coffee Shop, Dining Room and kiddie playroom and playground available, weekdays.
