Bulletin—B-3 ALTRUSA HONORS JIMMY LENTI — “You are the first honorary member of the Altrousers,” said Marguerite Coons, as she presented (above photo) Jimmy Lenti, the Gourmet Restaurant, Disneyland Hotel “maître de,” a framed certificate in appreciation of his services “beyond the line of duty” at the recent 11th district, Altrusa International Convention. “Altrousers,” explained Mrs. Coons, is the informal organization of husbands of Altrusa members as members attending the dinner meeting Monday night at the hotel gave Lenti a rousing ovation. (Bulletin Photo) Here and There The Women’s Service Club of the Church of Religious Science will hold a rummage sale Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 308 Spurgeon St., Santa Ana. Marriage licenses have been issued to John E. Earley of Maine and Doris E. Corkum of 9711 Pandora Lane, Anaheim; Richard J. Jensen of Long Beach and Lois D. Lang of 208 Ash St., Anaheim; Robert J. Austin of 3350 Olinda Lane, Anaheim, and Willeen S. Hencel of Norwalk; Wilbur Robinson of 1101 N. Palm, Anaheim, and Dorothy B. Potter of Garden Grove; and Emigdio C. Vasquez, of 555 N. Cypress St., Anaheim, and Rose G. Lopez of 1167 Lemon St., Anaheim. The annual Gage County, Newpicnic will be held at Bixby Park, Long Beach, May 3. All former Gage County residents and friends are invited to bring a picnic lunch and renew old acquaintances. Cofe, cream and sugar will be furnished. A spring dance, to which the public is invited is being planned by the Women’s Auxiliary to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 441. It will be held at the Garden Grove Elks Club, 11551 Trask Ave. Friday at 9 p.m. Altrusa Hears 11th Convention Reports; Initiates New Members along with Mexico. Their work were “the food, service and conference as a whole was on a page with any International convention. The award was made at April business session of the Anaheim Club held at the Gourmet with Edith Killefer, who retitled from the president’s office to June, presiding. The evening marked post-convention reports and communications, including one from the District Governor, Annetta Jamie and another from the immediate past Governor, Evelyn Collins. Closing highlight of the meet was the initiation of four members, Eva Mae Carill, J Young, Elizabeth Peterson, Arne Atkinson. Cartagena, Spain, where the S. Navy has built a new base, founded about 243 B. C. by Hdrubal, a brother of Hannibal was first called New Carthage. Center St, curtains time set for 8:30 p.m. Admissions are reasonable and will be available at the box office the night of the play. Other members of the cast include Joan Kelly, Carol Schott, Patricia Holochwu Don May, Dick Bell, Carolyn Oswald, Bob Bel Diane Beresh, and Katherine Stoughton. The play is directed by Colette Bertsch Adlesic, who Renee Tschachtli as assistant to the director Carolyn Oswald as stage manager. Rosary Institute 109 Holds Layette Shower Following the meeting, Our Lady of Rosary Institute 109, held in the Anaheim Assistance League Clubhouse and presided over by President, Mrs. Don Dixon, the annual layette shower for needy mothers in Orange County, and card party was held in the Clubhouse. All articles donated by the members for the layettes, will aid mothers unable to obtain necessary articles. Mrs. James Woods and her committee were responsible for decorations and carried out the "Stork" theme. Attractive planters were awarded for high scores in card games. Mrs. Jerome McKenna, chairman of the Cord Rosary Committee said that due to the great need for Cord Rosaries by the Missions, hospitals and juvenile hall, all members are urged to assist with this project. Mrs. Charles Lusin, chairman of the dinner to be held in the Palms Restaurant at 6:30 p.m. on April 20, honored Mrs. Marcene Hughes, district deputy, who will make her official visit that evening, announced that reservations close on April 17. They are to be made by calling KE 5-7313. Prospective members will be guests at the dinner. Mrs. Walter Thibodeau, general chairman of the fashion show to be held at Knott's Berry Farm on Saturday, May 2 at 12:30 p.m., announced completion of plans. Its theme is "My Lady's Treasures". Tickets may be obtained from Mrs. Ray Hudson, KE 5-4968. Mrs. Anthony Lipsky is decoration chairman, and Mrs. Bart Pasini is in charge of door gifts. The public is invited to attend this annual affair. A luncheon in the Garden Room at Knott's Berry Farm will precede the show. Early reservations are requested. Proceeds will be donated to St. Philip's Building Fund. Good Shepherd Group Slates Two Breakfasts Two May breakfasts to give serv The program will include a talk by David Bogen, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Juvenile Hall. The National philanthropy of Alpha Xi Delta is to help combat juvenile delinquency, both on the national and local level. In this area the Junior Alumnae Club has been giving aid to the Juvenile Hall of Orange County. Reservations and transportation arrangements for the founder's day luncheon can be made by calling Kimberly 7-1562 or Jefferson 4-1598. Among those attending will be members of the Orange County group including some of the officers. Orange and San Diego County members will hold their breakfast at 10 a.m., May 4, in Walker Memorial Hall in Orange. Mrs. William Courtney of Orange is chairman and reservations are to be made with Mrs. Arnold Kluender, 708 E. Walnut Ave., Orange. Dr. D. S. Styllanou of Santa Ana, an active leader in the field of mental retardation, will be the speaker, Mrs. John Potratz of Inglewood, will preside. The Los Angeles area breakfast will be given May 1, in Grace Lutheran parish hall, Vernon and Menlo Aves., Los Angeles. Bride-Elect Is Guest at Party Miss Carol Ann Hemkin of Corona, the bride-elect of Gary Kirchner of Cherry Valley was the honoree when her aunt, Mrs. Karl Hell, and her cousin, Miss Peggy Lou Hell, entertained at their home at 654 Carleton, Anaheim. Miss Hemkin is a former Anaheim resident and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Hemkin and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Hell of Anaheim. They plan to marry on May 1, the date of the golden anniversary of the J. L. Hell. Among the guests attending the miscellaneous shower party not already mentioned were Mrs. Robert J. Kirchner and Mrs. Iva Clark of Los Angeles; Mrs. Rass mussen and daughter, Mariam; Mrs. Lawrence Brummet, Mrs. Art Ullery, Mrs. George Stanley, Mrs. W. Hell and daughter, Susan; Mrs. E. Hedrick and Mrs. Nelson Calvin, all of Anaheim. Marshall PTA Hears Talk on Dental Hygiene "Dental Hygiene" was the featured subject at the April meeting of the Dr. Peter Marshall Parent-Teacher Association. Speaker of the evening was Dr. James F. Garry of Fullerton who was introduced by Mrs. William Martin, president. Dr. Garry gave an interesting talk on dental care and hygiene. The sixth grade classes provided entertainment. The program commemorated Pan-American Week. Chapman First CHEA The first scholarship to be AT CHARITY BALL — As "The Five Bits of Rhythm" swung into a dance melody at the Anaheim Assistance League's charity ball at the Gourmet ballroom, Disneyland Hotel, candid picture of Mrs. Margaret Fluor and Bill LeVecke, friend of her family for many years, was taken as other dancers move into the background. Mrs. Fluor, member of the League, and Mrs. LeVecke were among the chairmen and table hostesses for the "after eight" affair. (Bulletin Photo) Assistance League’s Charity Ball Benefits Philanthropies Formal pink flower trees at the entrance of the Gourmet ballroom of the Disneyland Hotel, and soft glowing pastel pink candles on deeper toned rose pink net bases for table centerpieces, greeted hosts of members and their guests attending the annual Anaheim Assistance League charity ball nearly 400 guests sharing in this benifit affair. Entwined in the ivy, which covered the pillars in the spacious ballroom, were deep rose pink geraniums, the ruffled net bases for the candles on the guest tables matching the rose shade. During the banquet social hour entertainment featured the well-known Gonzales Trio from Disney-land, their white satin costumes, accented with the colorful Mexican embroidery, along with their exciting music, setting the pace of gaiety for the evening. Formal also was the interesting exhibition dance team from the Arthur Murray studio. Remainder of the party was enjoyed in dancing to music played by "The Five Bits of Rhythm". Mr. and Mrs. Myrt Westering, general chairman for the society affair and her husband, along with committee chairmen were hostesses for the hospitality hour, the guests attending from many Southland cities. Proceeds from the ball will be used to further the League’s philanthropy projects. Chapman First CHEA The first scholarship to be awarded by the California Home Economics Association has been won by Chapman College junior Mary Louise Barker. The $500 grant will be applied toward tuition for the school-year beginning next September. Mrs. Barker was selected by the CHEA scholarship committee from among more than 40 applicants throughout the state. The award was made on the basis of grade point average, letters of recommendation, reasons for choosing home economics major, future plans, and financial need. Following her graduation from Chapman, with a A.B. degree and Special Secondary Teaching Credential, Mrs. Barker plans to teach home economics in high school. When she entered Chapman law fall, Mrs. Barker was awarded one of the annual Founders Day Scholarships for new students, as well as the Phillips Scholarship. A Founders Day Scholarship given for the first year a new student is at Chapman. The Dr. Virginia Phillips Memorial Scholarship, established in 1935 by Milton and Zalah Phillips in memory of their daughter, is awarded to a student majoring in home economics and is renewable. Mrs. Barker was graduated from Santa Ana High School and attended LENI WIENER ... Nominee Candidates for WGAC Woman Of Year Named Leni Wiener, president of Leni and Associates Advertising has been named as one of the nominees for the coveted "Woman of the Year Award" presented each year to a woman who has distinguished herself in her job or company by the Women's Graphic Arts Club. Mrs. Wiener, well known in California numbers among her accounts the SQR Store in Anaheim, as well as many other fine department stores from Arizona to Seattle, and several top food and drug products. The winner of the Graphic Arts Award will be announced later this month, and will be presented with the Annual Achievement Award at the Annual Award dinner in June. E-Elect Is Best at Party Carol Ann Hemkin of Corbridge-elect of Gary Kirchner Valley was the honoree her aunt, Mrs. Karl her cousin, Miss Peggy L., entertained at their 654 Carleton, Anaheim. Open House At Fremont Planned Open house at Fremont Junior High School will be held April 28, it was announced at the monthly Parent-Teacher Association meeting with Mrs. Don Langson presiding. The open house will take the place of the regular meeting. Mrs. Charlotte Robertson will sell Fremont pennants. The group voted to make a donation to the high school's graduation night party. Program evaluation sheets will be distributed to parents to help further next year's attendance at PTA meetings and also to help with a program that will be more thoroughly enjoyed by all the membership. The Fremont Junior High School awards dinner will be June 3 at 6:30 p.m. Mothers wishing to help with this school event are asked to contact Mrs. Langson at PR 4-8863 or Mrs. Don Burton at PR 4-4555. Mrs. Langson asked that all chairmen bring procedure books to the next board meeting in May. The fourth district meeting will be held in Costa Mesa April 16. The theme will be "Parent Education and Family Life." Women’s Group Hears Speakers Ahaheim Union High School exchange students and exchange teacher from England were featured speakers at the April meeting of the Women’s Council of the Christian Church. The meeting followed a luncheon served in the church dining hall where tables were decorated with spring flowers. Mrs. Robert Jackson presided. The two students, Peer Rasmussen of Denmark and Rosemarie Kertchner of Germany, and the teacher, Donald Matheson of England, gave talks on life in their own countries as compared to here and expressed their feelings for the welcome they have experienced here. Reports from various committees included an announcement of the May Fellowship meeting of the Anaheim Council of Church Women, and a Birthday Fellowship dinner to be held April 21 in the dining hall. The mother-daughter banquet will be held May 5. Music was provided by a girl's quartet from Chapman College. RU Alumni Set Campaign Deal Friends and alumni of the University of Redlands in Anaheim, the Santa Ana, and Fullerton area will gather for the 50th anniversary campaign kickoff and instruction dinner to be held April 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gourmet Restaurant, Disneyland Hotel. Co-chairmanning in this area for the fund are Miss Anna Claire Mauerhan and Walter Taylor. Working with these people are division chairmen, Mrs. Lee Laumer, Perry Maynard, Ocia Peters and Walter Prey. Team captains are Mrs. K. E. Johnson, Miss Lucille Shaw, Bob Barton, Dr.' and Mrs. Ted Krein and Ken Darling. In Paris, they're saying: "The loveliest flowers are the roses which have sprouted almost everywhere — on hats, belts, hems, chignons, tops of heads, sleeves." Not to mention gardens.
