Police said Mrs. Pearl Foreman was turned into a human torch. Richard Fisher sustained severe burns of the hands and feet. Both were taken to Garden Park Hospital. She died early today. Police were led to the tragedy through the alert work of the telephone company which traced a call to the apartment. A switchboard operator got a call from a woman who gasped: "Help... Help." The caller was unable to give her address or telephone number. A man's voice in the background was heard to say: "You're all right. You're not hurt badly." A police officer, on arrival at the scene termed it a "Horrible sight." He said Mrs. Foreman staggered toward him. Her hair had been burned off. Her arms, shoulders, and face were seriously burned. The officer placed the woman on a sofa and covered her with a blanket until an ambulance arrived. Fisher was quoted as saying he was sleeping in the bedroom and Mrs. Foreman was watching TV. He heard screams and rushed into the living room to find her nightgown in flames. Fisher used his hands to put out the gown flames and stomped a rug fire with his feet. Police said the fire apparently started in the bathroom. Barking Dog Prevents Burglary of Home An alert dog and an equally alert neighbor saved the home of Harlan Soden, 623 S. Ohio St., from being successfully burglarized Saturday night by thieves who dropped a heavy bundle at the rear gate in their haste to flee. Dwight Higgens, 619 S. Ohio, stated that at 9:15 p.m. his dog began to bark and run about in the back yard. He called to the animal to stop, but when it persisted he investigated. He heard the sound of running footsteps, and then noticed that the rear door to the Soden residence was ajar. He called police. Investigating officers discovered that the burglars had torn the screen door loose and forced the rear kitchen door open to gain entrance, and had used a bedspread to hold the loot they had gathered from the various rooms. Apparently frightened by the barking dog, the men fled, and at the rear gate dropped the heavy bundle. Rhae Foust Set For Grand Jury Hearing SANTA ANA (OCNS) — A man whose name has been mentioned countless times since the probe of Orange County Counsel Joel Ogle began last fall was scheduled for a Grand Jury appearance today. Dep. Dist. Atty. Dewitte Chatterton said Rhea Foust, a promoter in oil and real estate fields, was subpoenaed last week for Grand Jury testimony. Foust has been listed as a "mysterious figure" since the Ogle case broke into print. Reportedly was in many sessions of those persons involved in negotiating for a contract on Orange County's tide and submerged lands. Chatterton said efforts to serve Foust with a subpoena had been made. Local Assault Victim Gives Report to Police An assault and battery case was reported to Anaheim police at 3:22 a.m. this morning by victim Oscar Morgan, 824 S. Sherrill, who stated that he and his wife, Ruby, were eating in a cafe at Knott and Lincoln with friends while they became embroiled in an argument with a group of men sitting nearby. The unidentified men assertedly asked Morgan to step outside, an offer he declined. The men then left, but waited outside in their parked car. When the Morgans left 10 minutes later, the men followed. At the Morgan residence one of the men leaped from the car and approached Morgan, saying, "I'm going to whip you," and struck him on the mouth. Morgan retaliated, knocking his assailant to the street. A second attacker then pulled a switchblade knife which he replaced in his pocket after Morgan warned him that he had better. Two Marines were in custody as suspects. Deputy D. V. Webb and Richard Sapplington, who were checking the Pacific Water Co., 12061 E. Bolsa, Santa Ana, were able to pull off Thomas Walter Boehmer, 39, as he beat and tried to attack Mildren Frances Gulledge, 34, of 2006 W. 12th St., outside the Secret Harbor Inn, 15002 Harbor Blvd. The woman was lying on the ground, her head under a car, as the suspect hit her about the face and tried to pull off her clothes. California Highway Patrol reports show that Perry L. Curtis of 511 S. Olive St., was on duty last night at 9:45 p.m. when he was told to proceed, with siren and red light, to the scene of an injury accident at Lincoln and Knott Aves. As Curtis was traveling west on La Palma, 75 feet west of Gar- cers, Boehmer continued his attack and only stopped after the lawmen dragged him off and hand-cuffed him. The attractive mother’s shouting and efforts in blowing the horn of her car before she was forced out attracted William S. Wenzell, member of the Merchant Police, who alerted the Sheriff’s deputies. When found by the officers she was bleeding at the mouth and had lacerations all over her face. Deputies said the assault may have resulted in serious injuries to the victim had it gone any further. The suspect, who had been drinking heavily since yesterday, recalled seeing the woman inside the Secret Harbor and talking to her about some goldfishes and a talking bird. The next thing he remembered was being dragged off the woman by deputies. Married and the father of two children, the suspect gave his address as 13362 Tiller Ave., Orange. Mrs. Gulledge had gone to the establishment to tell a girl friend working there about a new job she had acquired. She had been out of work for a period of time. As she left the Secret Harbor, the Marine reportedly followed her, and dragged her out of her car. During the violent struggle, the victim ripped the horn ring off as she tried to attract help. Her struggles seemed to enrage the suspect, deputies said. Also in county jail today was Larry Keith Hailey, 25, of 1019 Irene Dr., Anaheim, who is charged with attacking Mrs. Betty Lou Travers, 25, of 11461 Marin Way, Garden Grove, Sunday in a Tustin area orange grove. Liberal doses of vinegar and olive oil were given to the boys by officer Keeley after their mother called the police station in a frantic search for help. Keeley quickly administered the antidote which brought relief to the stricken boys, reports said. The youngsters were taken to Garden Park Hospital where they were further treated and then released, sadder but wiser, to their parents.
