Southwest Artists Enter Works In Newport Harbor Art Exhibit Artists of the Southwest are entering their best works in the Newport Harbor Art Exhibit set for April 20-26 at Newport Harbor High School. The 14th annual exhibit again promises to represent a cross section of the best in art in the entire Southwestern area. Corona del Mar watercolorist Rex Brandt says there is an objection to the show is better recognized than the East than in the Harbor Area. He also expects to enter again this year. David Iredell, director of the Laguna Beach Art Gallery shares Brandt's opinion regarding t he importance of the Newport show. They agree it stems from consistently outstanding juries. This year Spring Sing at At FJC Slated For April 23 Fullerton Junior College's annual "battle of the tonsils," the "Spring Sing," has been set for Thursday, April 23, at 8 p.m. The singfest, competitively pitting seven college clubs, will again be open to the public. "This affair has become one of the extracurricular highlights of the year," says Dean of Women Marguerite Waters, "and judging from the elaborate preparations I've already observed, this year's show may well be the best ever." Rules for the activity demand that competing organizations employ only club members in their acts and that they prepare their own skits, complete with costuming and music. Seven clubs have announced their intention to compete, the Professional Nurses, the Veterans, the Theta Nu Theta, the Kappa Lambda Sigma, the Delta Sigma Chi, the Hornet Knights, and the Olympians. First and second place winners will have their organization's name engraved on a permanent plaque hanging in the Student Center. Additional between-act entertainment is also scheduled, and the master of ceremonies will again be former student Jack Hayes. This is the fourth year the Spring Sing has been presented. Duncan's Hired Killer Faces Death Decision VENTURA, Calif. (UPI) — A jury will decide today whether Augustine Baldonado, 25, will spend his life in prison or die in the gas chamber for his part in the "for hire" killing of Olga Duncan, 30. "I guess it will be the gas chamber," the ex-convict said at the conclusion of testimony Wednesday in his sentencing hearing. "There's not much chance for anything else." Baldonado admitted joining with Luis Moya, 22, to kill Olga last Nov. 11 on an offer of $6,000 by the pregnant victim's mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Duncan, 54. Moya is awaiting trial on a plea of innocent by reason of insanity and Mrs. Duncan already has been convicted and sentenced to death. In Newport Harbor Art Exhibit Artists of the Southwest are entering their best works in the Newport Harbor Art Exhibit set for April 20-26 at Newport Harbor High School. The 14th annual exhibit again promises to represent a cross section of the best in art in the entire Southwestern area. Corona del Mar watercolorist Rex Brandt says there is an obvious reason for this. Artists wish to include an award from the Newport show on their records. "In the last two years," he said, "Four candidates for the National Academy of Design have listed their awards from this exhibit in the brief five lines allowed on applications for naming their most distinguished awards." "No artist is nominated for the Academy who has received less than 40-50 awards." According to Brandt, ABOUT Stamps By ANDREW FERENCE The article, today, will tell in some detail how First Day Covers are handled at the First Day Office. This phaze of philately is important in that it has increased over 20 per cent within a year. Approximately 350,000 covers are handled for each issue of new stamp. The first step is the announcement that a new commemorative stamp will be issued on a certain day at a certain office. Let us assume that a new commemorative is to be issued in our own town of Anaheim. Remember, we are only assuming. The department would notify our postmaster, and send him a "Kit for First Day sales of New Stamps" which contains suggestions for community cooperation with a first day sale, instructions, for servicing, and other suggestions. As the BIG day for the postmaster approaches, a representative of the department will visit him to make definite plans for the sale. A week before the sale, a trained first day cover "technician" will arrive, and four days before the first sale, a canceling machine operator specialist will make his appearance. He will bring dies, hand canceling stamps, pans, sponges, ink and various forms used in the process. About then about 30 employees are assigned to the "specialists." I guess it will be the gas chamber," the ex-convict said at the conclusion of testimony Wednesday in his sentencing hearing. "There’s not much chance for anything else." Baldonado admitted joining with Luis Moya, 22, to kill Olga last Nov. 11 on an offer of $6,000 by the pregnant victim’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Duncan, 54. KE. 5-2863 Anaheim Truck and Transfer Co. 605 S. Los Angeles St. Around Hollywood By Vernon Scott HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Ever wonder what happens to a TV western star when his series is unhorsed? He heads right back into another horse opera. Such is the case with John Smith who co-starred with George Montgomery in "Cimarron City" which was put out to pasture after 33 segments. With reruns it will stagger through the summer months before collapsing altogether. Smith, a blond "anyone for tennis" kind of character, will roll up his sleeping bag and six guns and head for "Laramie," which happens to be the title of the new oater. Hour-Long Epic Scheduled to hit the coaxial cable next fall, "Laramie" is an hour long epic to be filmed in color for NBC. Actor Smith is unconcerned about "Cimarron City's" demise. He was unhappy with the alternating-lead arrangement with Montgomery. "I wouldn't want to be in the position again of competing with another actor for the same scripts," he said. "There's bound to be friction and trouble with two leading men. When a good script came along we were equally capable of playing the role, but the decision was never mine." "Laramie' will also alternate leads, but whoever is selected to play the other leading man won't appear in the same sequences that I do. Week Separate Shows "We'll work it like they do on 'Maverick.' Each of us will star in separate shows instead of assuming major and minor roles in the same show." Smith flashed a toothpaste-ad smile and launched into a pitch for the new program. He said, "It will deal with human relationships something like the father-son combination in 'Rifleman.'" Instead of a father, or a son, John will work with a kid brother whom he is trying to raise to manhood under the blazing guns of Wyoming badmen. "We're still casting for the boy," he went on. "But it looks as if Hoagy Carmichael will play a caretaker on our ranch. It's strictly a characer role, but important to each story line." If "Laramie' pulls off its job." State Asks for Portion Of Ortega Highway Area SANTA ANA (ONCS) — The County Road Department is studying a letter from the State Highway Department which calls for the relinquishing of a section of Ortega highway between Route 2 and the San Diego Freeway to the county.
