"Crime and Punishment, U. S. A." based on Dostoevski's Russian novel, is about a murderer and a prostitute. George Hamilton, who plays Robert, the murderer, is a student of drama and an East Coast socialite, and I predict for him a bright future in the make-believe world. Mary Murphy, who plays Sally, the prostitute, tells me she interviewed six such girls in the Lincoln Heights jail preparing for her role and found that most of them are dead to feeling and to emotion. "That is one of the reasons I played all in white and without makeup."
This is a well-made picture and good viewing.
Jayne Mansfield is about to become a recording artist. She has a contract with 20th-Fox Records. Roz Russell is writing a film script described as "A Western with an African locale," under the pen name of C. A. McKnight. Jane Wyman is being paged to return to the state in the road trope of "The Pleasure of His Company," the Broadway hit. Newcomer Tuesday Weld tells me she first saw the light of day in a Salvation Army hospital in New York City on August 27, 1944, and was christened Susan Ker Weld. She began professional modeling at the age of two, but dislikes posing.
The bidding was much the same at both tables. West opened with one diamond, and South wound up as declarer at four hearts.
Differences in language and in bidding methods didn't affect the opening lead. In both cases West opened the singleton ten of spades.
When To Lead Singletons
When do you lead a singleton? This type of lead was roundly con-
demned in the days of whistle. Of the writers went so far to call it a "sneak lead." It can be dangerous in contract bridge but a singleton lead is often easily called for.
The best time to lead a singleton is when you have reason to lieve that you can get to partner's hand fairly quickly when you can prevent decoding from drawing your trumps mediately. If you can't get partner's hand, he can't give the ruff. If declarer can not trump immediately, you will unable to ruff.
In this hand both West play knew that it was an ideal time lead a singleton. East's bid shows a high card or two, probably diamonds but possibly elsewhere. West's ace of trumps would vent declarer from drawing trumps in too much of a hull.
The play worked out as expected. Declarer won the first spade on the ace and led a trump. He stepped up with the ace of trump and led a club (since East could not have an entry in any suit). East won a club trick returned a spade for West to win.
West eventually had to get ace of diamonds, setting the contract. All a matter of routine in a world championship, but in average game West would have reason for pride in picking right defense.

Oil Case Figure
Foust Finally Found by Police
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — The Grand Jury is expected to meet here in special session Monday to hear testimony by Rhae Foust, a key figure in the current probe of the county's tidelands oil leasing practices. Foust, the object of an eight-year search by authorities, was finally located Monday night in Santa Ana as he drove along a main street in his car. Investigators reported that an 80-mile an hour chase finally led to their being able to serve him with a summons when Foust stopped for a traffic signal.
Widely known throughout Orange County for many years, Foust is active in a score of enterprises including oil and real estate development, as well as restaurants. He at one time was considered "Slot Machine King of Orange County" before the devices were completely outlawed.
Foust may also be called as a witness in the current trial of County Counsel Joel Ogle, accused of misconduct in office. The grand jury has alleged that Ogle influenced a tidelands oil drilling contract that was granted by the county to American Marine Exploration Co.
Foust did some public relations work for American Marine, and had been active in the dealings of another oil firm that held a tideland oil contract prior to American Marine.
Foust has been quoted in various testimonies as saying that "Ogle was his boy, and that he could make Ogle do anything he wanted."
Ogle is also under Grand Jury indictment on an accusation of accepting a $10,000 bribe in '1955 in connection with a tideland oil lease. John Linke, a club member and led a club (since East Coast not have an entry in any other suit). East won a club trick returned a spade for West to return it. West eventually had to get ace of diamonds, setting the right tract. All a matter of routine a world championship, but in average game West would be reason for pride in picking the right defense.
