Ambling With Ann

HOLLYWOOD — Look who's talkin'! George Montgomery, top hand in "Cimarron City." Says George, right out loud: "TV and movie Westerns are impossible!" Then he goes and adds, "But they make whoppers' good entertainment.
"You know," he assures me, "no Western ever has been made that hewed to all the realities of life on the range, because it would make right dull viewing. Plot and space call for certain expedients. Such as the one where you have a stagecoach clattering through a pass. Hundreds of whooping Indians are shooting at it and the folks inside are shooting at the redskins. This goes on for about ten minutes and the tension mounts and it's all very exciting.
"Actually," George points out, "all any right-minded Indian would have to do is to shoot one of the horses drawing the stagecoach. Then the others would get all snarled in the harness and that would be the end - but it wouldn't be very dramatic. As for re-creation of the Old West in modern films, I think every effort is made to achieve realism within the limitations of drama.
"You have to hit a happy medium and use imagination to create illusion and at the same time satisfy authenticity. The business of drama is make believe, but the more believable you can make it, the better it is."
George should know whereof he speaks. The guy was raised on a Montana ranch and never saw a town (Conrad, Mont.) until he was 12 years old: Says he: "The heritage of the Old West is something very, very few will ever see, and I'm glad I was brought up where things were a bit backward."
Philip Carey playmakes the famous private detective in the new filmed series of "Phillip Marlowe," which is being filmed in the yacht-ting town of Newport Beach, Cal., with John Abbot making like beat-generation bartender.
Jeanne Crain took time out from Screen Gems" "Wait Till Spring," to make with her favorite sport at Ski Mammoth. I predict the "Ellery Queen" series will fold this season. Bob Sweeney and Cathy Lewis were reuilt as man and wife on the initial shooting of the new "Fibber McGee and Mol-Tennessee College Has Model Of Rosetta Stone

Marvin Miller, emi$ary of "The Millionaire," soon will record a complete curriculum of home study lessons in fiction writing.
The music team of Jay Livingston and Ray Evans will write the score and title song for the one-hour Western color series, "Bonanza."
