Tuesday, April 7, 1958 Anaheim (Cal.) Bulletin—A-7 I'll Handel This By LEONARD R. HANDEL (Bulletin Sports Editor) Friday evening in the Anaheim High School gymnasium the Church of Latter Day Saints will present their professional wrestling card and it promises to be a real good one. Heading the main event is a guy who needs no introduction to local grappling fans, Mr. Moto. The Japanese grappler will lock horns with Mike Mazurki, whose build resembles that of the Chrysler Building. Mike has come a long way in the grunt 'n groan field and chances are good that he will continue to grow in stature as time rolls by. In his Anaheim match the big man will be meeting an opponent who will make up in sheer trickery what he loses in size. Moto, who can by no stretch of the imagination be considered a popular wrestler, has come up the hard way in the field, having met and defeated any number of top men in the game. He will bring into this area a style of grappling which is extremely popular amongst fans although they like to see him defeated. That is the rough and tumble phase. Moto asks or gives no quarter which means that come main event time Mazurki will have to win by himself as no one but himself will be able to help him. While the Mazurki-Moto match will draw a large percentage of the interest over its one-hour time limit, you can be certain that the remaining matches will also be rugged. In the second main go a tag team match pitting Louis Martinez and Enrique Moreno against Hardy Kruskamp and Bud Curtis will be featured. Romero and Martinez are the International Tag Team titlists and should they be able to come up to their usual form, the Company of Kruskamp and Curtis could be easily dissolved. The two prelims find Kruskamp meeting Romero and Martinez tiffing Curtis. First match, the Curtis-Martinez affair is slated to start at 8:30. Ducats will be available at the Kiddy Center, 151 W. Center St. The show promises to be a sellout, which means that local fans would do well to purchase their tickets early. Reservations can also be made by phoning KE 5-6475 or KE 5-3049. ADDED THOUGHT Let us remember that proceeds from this affair will go towards construction of a Latter Day Saints Church in Anaheim. This means that you can serve two worthwhile purposes through attending — so see you there. INTERESTING NOTE Pat Cronin, who is promoting the affair for the Latter Day Saints Church, is a former grappler himself. He has been instrumental in bringing wrestling to the Anaheim area. Pat has grappled with a number of these men (including Moto) and they are coming as a favor to him. Henry Cooper Offered Alex Miteff Bout NEW YORK (UPI)—Fight promoter Teddy Brenner today wired "British Empire heavyweight champion Henry Cooper "an interesting offer" to meet Alex Miteff of Argentina in an international bout at New York next month. Brenner was so impressed by Miteff's second-round technical knockout over favored Harold Carter of Linden, N. J., Monday night at St Nicholas Arena that he was ready to match the Argentine slugger with Cooper—if the British titleholder is interested. Miteff, a 2-1 underdog against Carter, opened up fast and caught the New Jersey heavyweight "cold" with a hard right to the jaw shortly before the end of the first round. Carter hung on gamely but appeared dazed at the bell. Then Miteff really went to town in the second round and dropped Carter twice for mandatory eight-counts before referee Teddy Martin stopped the bout at 2:21. VERO BEACH, Fla. (UPI) — Manager Walt Alston of the Dodgers was sure of six of his starters today as the club broke camp at Vero Beach and started the journey to Chicago for their league opener. The Californians will stop off at Jacksonville for an exhibition game with the Milwaukee Braves tonight with Don Drysdale, Clem Labine and rookie Gene Snyder assigned to pitch. The final spring training exhibition game will be held at Jacksonville against the Braves Wednesday afternoon. The Dodgers' farm club at Spokane of the PCL defeated the regulars 3-2 Monday in a final game at Vero Beach. Just as he did last year, Alston named Don Drysdale as his starting pitcher for Friday's opening game. Last year Drysdale started against the Giants was on the losing end of an 8.0 shutout turned in by Ruben Gomez. The rest of the Dodgers' sure starters are Gil Hodges, first base; Charlie Neal, second base; Wally Moon, left field; Duke Snider, centerfield; and John Roseboro, catcher. Right field, shortstop and third base still are question marks. Shortstop and right field are further complicated by injuries to Carl Furillo, Don Zimmer and Bob Lillis. Furillo, who has not missed an opening game since his rookie season in 1946, has played in only 10 spring games. He has been side lined twice because of a pulled muscle in his left leg. Alston does not want to rush him into the lineup, especially against a right handed pitcher. If Furillo can't make it by Friday, rookie Ron Fairly may get the nod in right field. Both Men Zip Both men have zipped to some good times in this department but it is believed the Indian runner will have a slight edge. Other Colonists who figure to take a big part in the local's attack are such men as high jumper Denis Vollom, sprint man George Bragg, Bill Smith, Bob McPhillips and Gerry Woodward. Sport Parade By OSCAR FRALEY NEW YORK (UPI)—The Dodgers moved from one coast to the other but, as far as their new Los Angeles stadium is concerned, it's still the same old story of "wait 'til next year." That's the word from Arthur Froehlich, sports' leading architectural engineer. He has submitted plans to owner Walter O'Malley for a plush Chavez Ravine stadium complete with valet parking and swanky restaurant. "But I don't believe the Dodgers will get around to construction this year," says Froehlich. "There are just too many problems." The husky, graying man who was a baseball player during his undergraduate days at the University of California has planned and constructed everything from baseball stadiums to recreation centers, bowling alleys and office buildings and, more or less in the same field of endeavor, horse parks and psychiatric clinics. His pet projects have been the horse parks. These include Golden Gate, Del Mar and Hollywood Park in California, as well as the It is the poorest pre-Loop tab recorded by a local ball club in many years. Starts Evenly Yesterday's game started off evenly enough when Anaheim jumped out in front 2-1 in the top of the second. Clint Stark singled, advanced to second on a base hit by Chuck Smith and came flying home when Denis Vollom bingled. Anaheim then had runners on first and third with one out. Catcher Tom Lambeth walked to load the bases and pitcher Dick Kreager fanned. Benny Ramirez walked to force home Smith and the sacks remained jammed. Just when it appeared that the locals might be able to even their pre-season mark thanks to a big rally Glen Herbel whiffed to end the inning. Jordan Leads Jordan had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, thanks to a walk, stolen base and two-base hit. They knotted the count 2-2 in the last of the second when leadoff batter Bob Cook rammed a home run after letting three pitches go by. With the score knotted, both ball clubs fought to a sandstill until the last of the third when Jordan opened the flood gates. Backsters Meet Season heavy practice sessions have been scheduled. His current projects include a 66-million-dollar track in Caracas, Venezuela, the 33-million-dollar Aqueduct track and reconstruction at famed Saratoga. Must Be Mobile Froehlich has applied the know-how attained in erecting shopping centers to the business of taking care of the horse players. "The customer has to be able to move with comfort and speed." Froehlich says with the enthusiasm of the lowliest two-dollar bettor scrambling for the mutuel window. "That's why racing has such a traffic flow problem. It's the only sport where the crowd must be mobile." "Your racing fan needs freedom of motion throughout the afternoon. He wants to see the race, make his bets and get back to see the race on which he is betting." Inventor of valet parking for race tracks. Froehlich also originated the "betting island" and the bank-type mutual windows. Tab Mantle Mays to Snare Bat Crowns NEW YORK (UPI)—Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle will regain the major league batting titles while Stan Musial and Ted Williams slip back into the pack this year. This is the forecast of the United Press International Board of Baseball Experts in its annual pre-season survey. Twenty-seven of the 50 experts picked Mays to win the National League title and twenty-three chose Mantle to win the American League crown. Musial, who has won seven NL rally Glen Herbel whiffed to end the inning. All they did was to score four runs in the fifth and add six more in the next period to completely "deep freeze" the decision. Colonyville could not get another serious threat started after their second inning outbreak and they were forced to suffer their 11th loss of the year. Four Hits In falling to their seack the Colonists were able to acquire only four hits, a problem which has been plaguing them since the start of seasonal play. Anaheim went back to the practice field today as they prepared for their Sunset League lifter with Newport Harbor Thursday. That game will start at 3 p.m. and the chances are good that the affair will draw a good turnout of local baseball fans. In Newport the locals will be meeting a team which they faced in the La Habra Kiwanis Baseball Tournament. In that skirmish they dropped Coach George Hunter's Sailors 3-0. Expected to take the starting assignment for the Colony is Clint Stark, who has been pitching some tremendous ball throughout the year. Against Las Vegas (one of his best-strikeout performances), the lad faced 11 men and fanned nine, while walking the remaining two. Thursday's game is expected to go a long way towards selecting the team to finally snare Sunset League laurels. Newport is the only team to hold a win in Loop action against last year's champion Colonists.
