Niven, Hayward Win Top Oscar Awards

where 2,800 of the film industry's outstanding stars and technicians were jammed to witness and participate in the glittering event.
A small force of policemen, firemen and theater personnel conducted a quiet hour and a half search which failed to turn up any bomb.
"I doubt if anyone in theater knew anything was amiss except the people involved," said Sgt. William K. Daniels. He said the caller threatened the bomb would go off at 11:30 p.m., e.s.t.
"This industry has been so good to me I don't know what to do in return;" said the thankful Miss Hayward whose previous nominations came for her roles in the films "Smash-up," "My Foolish Heart," "With a Song in My Heart," and "I'll Cry Tomorrow."
Niven, who in real-life was a British army officer both before embarking on his acting career and during World War II, finally won his Oscar for his part as a sensitive — but fraudulent—British army officer.
State Seeks Land For Site Of College
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Acquisition of property for the proposed Orange County State College and for the Orange Freeway is sought in a condemnation suit that is now on file in Superior Court here.
Purpose of the combined suit is to "kill two birds with one stone" was the indication given by state officials in their request for the property. Specifically sought are 10 parcels of land containing more than 200 acres on Piofferen Ave. between Placentia and Cypress Ave.
Initially the freeway route of the Orange Freeway, a north-south freeway that cuts through Placentia, Fullerton, Anaheim, and through Orange to the Santa Ana Freeway, would have gone right through the college site. Plans were revised after the site was announced and the freeway will now skirt the college near Placentia Ave.
Named as defendants in the suit were Erna C. Watts, Alfred H. Beazley, Henry and Veronica Truttman, Herman and Ozell Yafee, S. T. Ziler and Dorothy Ziler, Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Streholw, Federal Bank of Berkely, Federal Land Bank of Berkely, Orange County Title Company, County of Orange, the City of Fullerton, the Fullerton Union High School District, J. E. Prentice, William T., Ella R. Wallop, S. James and Kathleen Tuffree, W. Roy and Alice C. Newson, the heirs of the late Henry F. Hetebrink, Andrew Opal Mahr Jr., Mollie F. Mahr, the Abstract Title Guaranty Co., and 100 John Does or unnamed parties.
'Fantastic' State Debt Outlined by Expert
(Coninued From Page 1)
cently that he did not believe there would be any trouble in "selling state bonds to finance its water program."
"That's right." Gregory commented, "there's no problem to selling California bonds now — if you want to pay a high enough interest rate.
"In 1945 some 15 million dollars in state bonds sold for an interest rate of less than 1 per cent. The latest bond issue went for more than three and a half times that interest rate.
Danger Signal
"Bonds are popular with politicians. They spread the cost over a long period of time so it doesn't look like much for any one year, but the cost is nevertheless." Gregory said that the politicians are ignoring a danger signal in that California is now paying a couple of tenths of a per cent higher interest on bonds than the national average, but should be paying less.
"California is in a better financial position and has greater promise of growth than other states," he said.
"The problem is we have glutted the eastern market, which is still king in financial matters." Gregory said the answer to the problem is to be selective.
"There is merit in nearly all bond issues, but there has to be a system of priority," he said.

Claim Bright ‘Meteor’ Hits California Peak
MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. (UPI) — A glowing object, believed to be a small meteor, flashed across the Northern California sky Monday night and apparently crashed into a mountain peak about 75 miles southeast of San Francisco.
Observers at the naval air station here said they spotted the object at 8:45 p.m. p.s.t., and it appeared to break into three pieces. Two pieces apparently burned out, but the third plunged to the ground in the Pacheco Pass area between Gilroy and Los Banos.
A Navy spokesman said the meteor was also reported by two airline pilots and John Stevens, a gas station operator who said he saw the object hit the mountain.
