Square Dancers Plan ‘Fun Train’ Trip to Denver Confab in May Southern California square dancers will be offered the unusual opportunity to travel via "Fun Train" to the eighth annual National Square Dance Convention to be held in Denver, Colo., May 28, 29, 30. Tentative plans are for Santa Fe Railway to operate a special train leaving Los Angeles Tuesday, May 26, arriving in Denver on Wednesday in time for the Trail's End Dance the night before opening of the convention. Special features of the train are excursion rates for chair car, Pullman and meals en route and a specially-equipped baggage car for square dancing during the 29 hours' travel. The convention is to be a part of "Rush to the Rockies" celebration, commemorating Colorado's 100th anniversary of statehood. The convention will be held in Denver City Auditorium. In addition, there will be square dance parties in the ballrooms of the Albany, Cosmopolitan, Shirley-Savoy and Brown-Palace Hotels. A banquet for Californians is planned to be held in the Cosmopolitan. Rates and information may be had from Carl Anderson, 330 West Cypress St., Redlands. Anderson chairman of the excursion train committee, urges reservations must be made prior to April 15. Convention registration and hotel reservations should be made directly to the Eighth National Square Dance Convention Committee, 314 14th St., Denver. California headquarters in Denver during the convention will be the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Mosko's Holiday Inn Motel. OCC Students Accepted For Study in France Two Orange Coast College students have been notified of their acceptance for a year's study abroad at the University of Aix-Marseille in France. Nancy Britton, 2461 Zenith Ave., in Santa Ana and Antolnette Dittrick, 255 Nyes Place, Laguna Beach, will study at the university receiving American university credits by taking courses in English at the institute. The two students will join other American students in a program being directed by the Institute of Aix-Marseille. Professors at the university will include not only American professors but scholars from the University of Paris, Oxford University and Harvard University. Dr. Edward C. Schneider, German Consul General at Los Angeles, and Basil Bleck, information officer of the British Consulate in Los Angeles, will be joined in a panel discussion by Dr. Leroy Hardy of the LBSC+ political science staff who will represent the U.S. point of view. The two-hour forum for students and faculty is sponsored by the college chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, social science honorary. Dr. Schneider, as his country's representative in the Marshall Plan, was the First German official to come to the United States after World War II. Bleck is a graduate of Cambridge University and is a member of the English Bar. Orange Coast College To Continue Nursing Program; Applications Now Being Taken Continued accreditation of the vocational nursing program at Orange Coast College has been granted by the National Association for Practical Nurse Education, Inc. Applications for enrollment in the September class are now being accepted by Mrs. Quessie Anderson, director of the OCC vocational nursing program. The one-year course is also approved by the State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners. During the course, students receive a minimum of 1700 hours of training in 12 months. Pre-clinical training in nursing sciences, nursing procedures, feeding the sick child development and introduc- tory psychology is given on the Orange Coast College campus by the vocational nursing staff. The OCC vocational nursing instructors conduct clinical training at the extended campuses of the college, which include St. Joseph's Hospital, Community Hospital and Balser's Rest Home. Clinical training at the extended campuses includes preparation of special hospital equipment such as the oxygen tents and croupettes caring for instruments and supplies and assisting with patient feeding. The program is open to students from 17 to 50 years of age. During the clinical period of training, each student receives a stipend of $40 for two months and $80 for five months. Bulletin—A-8 LBSC Annual 49’er Day Set For April 24 Students at Long Beach State College will turn the calendar back more than a century Friday, April 24, when they stage 49’er Day, their annual funfest in the early California tradition. Classes will be dismissed at noon, and students and faculty will gather in "Pete's Gulch" on the lower campus where a 24-building frontier town will be constructed. The day’s program includes booths, games, contests, special olio entertainment, a chuck-wagon style dinner, and a dance in the evening. Winners of the Black Bart and Lotta Crabtree contest will be announced early in the day, and the two legendary figures will reign as king and queen of the college celebration. Other highlights include the naming of the winners of the six-week long beard growing contest, a fast draw contest, and a tricycle derby.
