In Firestone Contest
An Anaheim Union High School senior, Adele Kay Armstrong, today was named winner of a valuable college scholarship from The Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., which pays full tuition, fees, textbooks, and a substantial contribution toward room and board for four full years at any college or university in the country.
Leonard K. Firestone, President of Firestone Tire and Rubber and Company of California, made the announcement.
Miss Armstrong and 28 other winners were chosen this year from 322 applicants whose parents are company employees. Firestone has granted 168 such scholarships since 1953. Of the 90 students still in school, 36 will graduate in June, and 101 young men and women will be in college in the fall under the Firestone scholarship program.
A resident at 7292 Faircrest Dr., Anaheim, with her mother, Mrs. Mercedes Quaintance, Miss Armstrong plays violin in the school orchestra, and is a member of the Latin Club, Tri-Hi-Y, and the Honor Society. She is an officer in Job's Daughters and is a member of her church's choir and youth group. She plans to study medicine.
In making public the seventh annual announcement of winners, Firestone said, "Industry has a substantial interest in contributing to the education of our young people. The responsibility to provide better educational opportunities for them is a very real one, because it is upon them that the progress and prosperity of our country depend."
Two other Firestone scholarship winners from California were announced — both from Earl Warren High School, Downey. Patricia Ann Kroener, 12085 S. Samoline Ave., Downey, and Barbara Brook, 7340 Irwingrove Dr., Downey, were the two high school seniors named.
Winners are selected each year by a special scholarship committee on the basis of grades in high school, scores on the American Council of Education psychological examination, academic rank in the class, and other qualifications indicating a candidate's character potential for success in college and in post-college life.
Of the 14 girls and 13 boys who receive scholarships this year, six want to become engineers; five teachers; three doctors; three chemists; two will take liberal arts courses; and one each will study psychology, science, business administration, languages, law, social sciences, hospital dietetics, and nursing.
The winners are from 14 states as follows: California, 3; Iowa, 1; Indiana, 1; Illinois, 1; Louisiana, 1; Massachusetts, 1; Michigan, 1; New Mexico, 1; Ohio, 8; Oklahoma, 1; Pennsylvania, 2; Rhode Island, 1; Oregon, 1; and Tennessee, 4.

Meeting together with the doctors, auxiliary members helped work out preliminary plans for the free foot health examination scheduled for the afternoons of May 5, 6, and 7 in the Orange County Health Building, 645 North Ross in Santa Ana. These examinations will be held in conjunction with National Youth Fitness Week and National Foot Health Week.
