Round-Robin Net Winners Named Winners of the round robin singles and doubles tennis tournaments which are an annual summer event sponsored by the Recreation Department, were announced today. Matches are limited to these in junior high school and under with ribbons awarded by the Department. In the boys' singles Jim Doepke, John Flynn, and Frank Perryman were the winners, with Annall Mittman, Trudi Borden, and Judy Keach taking the honors for the girls. Doubles winners were Mary-anne Fellbaum and Brenda Martindale, Diane Fellbaum and Annall Mittman, Frank Perryman and Jim Doepke, and Janice Garrison and Judy Kirkelle. Most of these players are now competing for the gold and silver tennis trophies being offered in the Bob Williams Junior High School Championships in girls' and boys' singles, girls' and boys' doubles, and mixed doubles. Activity will continue at a strong pace for the next few weeks with the Mary and Tex Middleton Singles Championships the next event on the schedule. This tournament features just two events, girls' singles 18 years old and under and boys' singles 18 years old and under. Handsome perpetual trophies, now on display at Bob Williams' Sporting Goods Store, are given to the winners, with individual trophies also being donated to the winners and the runners-up in each division. With all expenses paid by the sponsors, the tournament annually draws a record entry list of youthful enthusiasts. Also giving junior tennis development a tremendous boost is the Anaheim Kiwanis Club which is following a national policy of the organization in sponsoring local youngsters in the National Junior Public Parks Championships, being held this year from August 1 to August 7 at Arcadia. Chosen from the rosters of the Anaheim juniors for the week of fun and tennis are Pamela Davis, Carolyn Kirven, Joan Light, Rita Flynn, Bill Otta, Don Kliss, John Heiden, and Steve Morris. Of interest, too; is the Santa Ana Novice Tournament on July 25, open to juniors of Orange county. Entries are being taken at the park by Floyd Baker of the Recreation Department during the regular daily class sessions from 1:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Lynx' Bielefeld Hurls 17 Innings FULLERTON (OCNS) — The Buena Park Lynx dropped a double header here at Amerige Park last night, but despite the shabby showing pitcher Eloise Bielefeld a catcher Mary Whitney stood above the Jolt handed the location by the Phoenix Ramblers. The Ramblers won the opening 4-3, then went on to capture the nightcap, 2-1. However, the nightcap was a tie inning affair with Eloise pitching the entire 17 innings. This performance followed her victory over Phoenix Tuesday night. It made total of 25 straight innings in two nights that Eloise pitched. Catcher Whitney, a resident of Anaheim and a physical education teacher in Los Angeles County caught a total of 32 consecutive innings in two nights. "I could see she gal was really tired at the end of that 17 inning game," said Manager Shorty Hill. Both Eloise and Kathleen Bielefeld tripled in the last game. The Lynx meet Phoenix again tonight at Buena Park and again Saturday at Fullerton. MIDGETS DEFEATED Some poor base running by the Anaheim Midgets nullified seven solid hits and Tom Grothe's first hurling as they went down to defeat at the hands of Fullerton yesterday. The Boston Red Sox stretched the Athletics' latest losing streak to nine games with a 6-0 victory Wednesday night—and it was none other than the coach's 23-year-old son, George Susce Jr., who was the chief villain. Susce Jr., a strong-armed right hander, yielded a leadoff single to Vic Power and then hurled no-hit ball for the remainder of the game. The victory enabled the onrushing Red Sox to move within a game of the third-place Cleveland Indians, who lost to the Washington Senators, 6-4, and again tightened the American League race. The second-place Chicago White Sox advanced to within two games of first place with an 8-6 triumph over the New York Yankees. But the drama of the night was unfolded in Kansas City. Susce Jr. had compiled a 4-3 mark for the Red Sox but Manager Mike Higgins never before had pitched him against the Athletics. Around the league, fans and players won dered how the young pitcher would react when he finally was called upon to pitch against his father's team. A 14-game winner for Louisville last season, Susce Jr. turned in his first big league shutout while his father watched the progress of the game from the bullpen. The 47-year-old coach, who groomed his son to be a ballplayer, played for five major league teams but caught a total of 146 games in eight seasons. It was the first time Susce Sr. had seen his son pitch in a major-league game, but he was so busy in the bullpen 412 feet from the plate that he only saw him briefly. The young pitcher's mother, brother, and sister were in the stands, however, and got a much better look. The Red Sox, who have won 18 of their last 23 games, knocked out Arnold Portocarrero with four runs in the second inning and added two more runs in the third. National League casloff Grady Hatton contributed a single to the second-inning rally and a triple in the third frame. GOOD YEAR The Baltimore Orioles in 1954 made a profit of $643,000. Sport Parade By OSCAR FRALEY NEW YORK (UP)—There is additional evidence at hand today that golf has attained its greatest popularity since the fabulous days of Bobby Jones. Exhibit A has to do with the $10,000 Hickok Belt awarded annually to the pro athlete of the year. It is an award voted monthly, and, in a final runoff among the 12 to one of them for keeps by 300 sportswriters and sportscasters. And in the first half of the year, four of the six winners were professional golfers. Past winners have included three baseball players, Phil Rizzuto and Allie Reynolds of the New York Yankees and Willie Mays of the New York Giants, as well as heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano and golfer Ben Hogan. It is slightly startling that a baseball player hasn’t yet cracked in among the monthly winners this year. Gene Littler led the January voting and Mike Souchak made it two in a row for the fairway fraternity in the February balloting. Terry Sawchuk of the Detroit Red Wings grabbed it for hockey in March but golf came back as Masters champion Cary Middlecoff won it in April. Willie Shoemaker, riding Swaps to Kentucky Derby victory over the favored Nashua, was the May choice. But golf was back with another victor last month when Jack Fleck piled up the greatest number of first place votes in two years as he defeated Ben Hogan in the National Open playoff. The upset man from Iowa had plenty of competition, too, all from boxing, which usually ranks high in this voting free-for-all. For in June, Archie Moore scored his big win over Bobo Olson and two titles changed hands as Carmen Basillo beat welterweight champion Tony DeMarco and Bud Smith won the lightweight crown from Jimmy Carter. (Continued from Page 7) property trunks and was barbering with a couple of the Braves’ players. One of the players knew of the Cards’ players meeting and said: “Say, Diz, aren’t you supposed to be at that meeting?” When Dean nodded affirmatively, the Braves asked, “Well, what’s the meeting all about, anyway?” “Oh, Frisch just called the meeting to tell everyone how I’m going to pitch to the Braves,” Dizzy said.
