SPORTS By Ed Mullen BULLETIN SPORTS EDITOR The inimitable Jerome "Dizzy" Dean during his heyday as a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals was regarded as the most-colorful player in baseball both on and off the field. While Dizzy thrilled fans throughout the nation as he did in 1934 when he posted 30 wins against 7 defeats, he also made them chuckle as reporters wrote tales of his gigantic "country-style" sense of humor. Ol' Dizzy might not be using his speed to mow down opposing hitters any more, but he is now fast-balling television audiences to death. His humor is still refreshing—and fans are watching their favorite game of the week on TV each Saturday afternoon, they are occasionally being rocked with laughter at Dizzy's accounts of the game, It happened to me last Saturday when Dean gave his account of the contest between Cincinnati and Brooklyn. I'm looking forward to his broadcast this Saturday of the game between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. As an added attraction, Dizzy and his sidekick Buddy Blattner, the latter sometimes playing the straight-man, has scheduled a between-inning interview with Dizzy Vance and Rogers Hornsby. Dizzy ballyhooed his latest concoction as a match of "wit and words between the greatest right-handed pitcher and greatest right-handed batter of all time." YOU'LL SEE THEM SNERLING, ALL RIGHT At the beginning of last week's game, it started to rain in Brooklyn. Dizzy commented, "They say the farmers and the peoples like rain . . . If it must, well, let it go." The Reds' Ted Kluszewski hit a home run which tickled Dizzy. Duke Snider of Brooklyn did likewise and tied Big Klu for the league home-run leadership. The game was tied, too. This feat thoroughly inspired Dizzy. He hummed a few bars of a tune, then said: "My, my, podners, ain't we havin' ourselves a time this here afternoon . . . As long as we got baseball, there's always others that fly . . . All we have to do is worry about getting to Chicago next week." Dean told of the scheduled meeting between Vance and Hornsby. "And when you got them, you got a little 'snerling' at each other," said Dizzy. Blattner laughed. "You got a little snerling, Diz? Where'd you come up with that one?" Dean continued: "I recollect one time Dizzy struck out Baseball in Brief Told in a Nutshell PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE W L Pct. Dean continued, "I recollect one time Dazzy struck out Hornsby four times in one game . . . And, brother, that's a year's work . . . Yes sir, you'll see some snerl—or snarling, all right." When signing off, Dizzy philosophized with this: "Fans, remember that sports is good for a man, cause it makes men out of a man." SAME PERSONALITY WHEN PLAYING BALL Dizzy was well-liked by other players because of his good-natured, let's say, naturalness. He was involved in difficulties that only the great Diz could talk his way out of. His tremendous career as a pitcher was brought to an abrupt halt, though his arm was still strong. He was struck on the toe by a line drive and was never able to pitch effectively after that. His broken toe ruined his delivery and he came up with a sore, then dead arm. My favorite story concerns the afternoon the Cardinals and Braves were playing in Boston. Dizzy was scheduled to pitch and Manager Frank Frisch called a player's meeting. Dizzy walked into the Braves' clubhouse (where he wasn't supposed to be before a game) and sat on one of the big (Continued on Page 8.
