ANAHEIM BULLETIN Northern Orange County HOMES—GARDENS National Newspapers Gain in Advertising NEW YORK (UP) — National newspaper advertising now is running at a record rate of 650 million dollars a year and in the first five months of 1955 showed an eight per cent gain over last year, it was announced today. If the present rate continues, 1955 national newspaper advertising will hit a higher peak than ever attained by any national medium, Harold S. Barnes, director of the Bureau of Advertising, American Newspaper Publishers Association, said. The Soviet Union is the world's leading wheat producer, but produces less than five per cent as much corn as the United States. The group announced approval of a process for manufacturing table, chest, bar and desk tops with "super resistant genuine hardwood surfaces that can be finished in any color or effect." The association said you can burn a cigaret completely to ash, spill nail polish, polish remover, alcohol or fruit juice on the hardwood surfaces without damaging them. "For example," said the association, "in the alcohol proof tests. hardwood plywood construction." The advantage, he said, is that any plant which makes plywood can use the new process. The furniture tops can be constructed with the rest of the piece and finished at the same time. He said that 28 firms making walnut, mahogany, oak and oak furniture are in "various stages production" and will have so the hardwood pieces on the market "within a few months." The association so far has proved the finishes of five facturers for use in the process. "It's a synthetic finish," he said. "It's not a varnish or a lacquer."
