ANAHEIM BULLETIN Northern Orange County HOMES—GARDENS Non-Farm Employment Sees Slight Increase SAN FRANCISCO (UP) — Non-farm employment totaled 3,870,000 in California in May, an increase of 26,000 over April, and the highest monthly total for any previous month except December, 1954. The Division of Labor statistics and Research of the California Department of Industrial Relations reported the May total was 4 per cent above a year ago and 2 per cent above the previous May high in 1953. Largest gains were recorded in construction, service, finance, insurance, real estate, and manufacturing. California factory wages reflected similar increases with the hourly average wage in May reported as $2.10, slightly up over April and seven cents higher than a year ago. Weekly earnings were reported at a record $84.70, 23 cents more than in April and $3.855 above May last year. The workweek stood at 40.3 hours, showing little change from the past few months but half an hour longer than a year ago. 1955 Retail Spending Suffers Slight Drop LOS ANGELES (UP)—Retail prices paid by moderate income families in the Los Angeles area during May rose an average of 0.9 per cent over April levels, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics announced today. There was a decrease of 0.8 per cent in the level of food prices, but it was not enough to offset higher prices for other family expenditures.
