SPORTS By Ed Mullen BULLETIN SPORTS EDITOR When C. W. Murrel, a promising 29-year-old basketball coach with a brilliant background in Southern California hoop circles, took his first look at the new Santa Ana College gym he merely whistled long and low. This was it. This was his biggest chance at basketball coaching in more than a half dozen different assignments. The Dons have been on the march in recent seasons. They were Eastern Conference perennial cellar-dwellers a few seasons back, but have risen considerably in the standings. This rise was under the capable hands of Coach Stu Inman who moved to Orange Coast College. The Dons now have the incentive of their new 3,000 capacity gymnasium, their past record of improvement, plus their new coach who has earned a fine reputation by his coaching past winners. Murrel (prounonced Merle) was remembered as a classy center on a strong Hollywood High team in 1943-44. He also starred at all positions for Chapman College and played with several semi-pro teams. He was assistant coach at Chapman in 1951, then coached three years for Mother of Good Counsel in Hollywood. He has been sports supervisor for the Los Angeles County Rec. Dept. the last four years. In addition to basketball coaching, Murrel will also teach driver training. LEGION TOURNEY AT LA PALMA ON AUG. 5 Director Patrick Ahern of the 10th Invitational Junior Legion Baseball Tournament has announced the tourney will start Friday, Aug. 5, at Anaheim's La Palma Stadium. Entry blanks are in the mail with the entry deadline set for July 22. Team pairings will be made at Anaheim on Sunday, July 24. And as usual, a gala event has been planned. INDY LOOP Delco Victorious In Softball Play Delco-Remy won a victory over Cal. Research 2, last night in an Anadarko Industrial Softball league test with Shortstop S. Gaughy belting a two-homer. The losers got four hits off Pitcher B. Neil. Robertshaw-Fulton edge B and Y-Housemovers, in the seventh-inning. Cliffton's hit was the climax of victory and he also collar three hits in four trips to plate. Alpha Beta downed Corp., 6-2. Team pairings will be made at Anheim on Sunday, July 24. And as usual, a gala event has been planned. Since the first tournament in 1945, some 576 Junior Legion baseball teams and 9216 boys have participated. They have all been guided by some 1152 coaches and managers. About 3500 baseballs have been used. The tournament committee also pointed out that its members have devoted more than 25,000 man hours to make this annual event a success—and without remuneration. Honors for miles traveled goes to Corp. Marshal N. Braden Post No. 56 of Santa Maria. This team has played in each of the nine tournaments for a total of 3000 mile. Las Vegas, Nev., Post No. 8, team entered one time and chalked up a 1000-mile journey. The tourney schedule calls for two games nightly at 7 and 9 o'clock, with five games on Saturday and Sunday. No admission is charged. Chit Chat... Del Mar race course near San Diego, opening July 27, was completed in 1937 and was the first major track to operate in the summer months in California. "Dumb Dan" Morgan, the New York fight manager, was the best known sports figure to die recently. His nickname was a misnomer as the 80-year-old fellow could talk faster than his borses ever ran and better than any of his fighters ever fought. CALL MUSIAL 'AGELESS' AND TELL THE TRUTH All-Star game reflections... George "Red" Munger of the Hollywood Stars was telling me just last week that anyone who calls Stan Musial "ageless" is merely telling the truth. The veteran hurler Munger played with Musial on the St. Louis Cardinals for many seasons. "His competitive talent has never lessened since re was a rookie," said Red. "He might get injured during a season and not be standout one year as he was the last, but he's still the meanest man in baseball when it comes to the clutch. You might strike Stan out three times in a game, but if he's up there the fourth time with men on base and that number of runs needed to win—just say goodbye." Many fans who watched the All-Star game on TV said they could almost sense Musial would put an end to the game when he stepped up to the plate against Boston's pitcher Frank Sullivan was a young right-handed curve-baller who probably felt he was looking into the face of a dragon when he pitched to Musial, a past-master in wrecking games in just such a fashion. "It was the best pitch I'd seen all afternoon," said Musial... Sullivan only sat before his locker in a daze after the game and said nothing. Manager Leo Durocer used every player on his squad, except one pitcher... Leo can be given credit by the National League for not letting the team "give up" when they trailed, 5-0, entering the seventh inning... His bush-button tactics worked successfully in the scoring of five runs in the seventh and eighth innings... Al Kaline of Detroit (age 20), Hank Aaron of Milwaukee (age 21) were very impressive... Holly Park Cup Race Shapes Up By ALEX KAHN INGLEWOOD (UP)—The $100,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, overshadowed in recent weeks by the performances of the sensational Swaps, today began shaping up as an attractive race which will draw from six to nine top thoroughbreds. With entries scheduled to be taken tomorrow for Saturday's race, a strong field appeared in the making for the mile and a quarter classic which has the added attraction of carrying $100,000 net to the winner. The flight here last week of All-Independent League In Track Prelim The Independent League of the "C" Juvenile Leagues completed its qualifying today for the All-City Track Meet. Buddy's Burgers and Cyril Cooke Motors shared team participation honors with 33 entry points apiece. Individual scoring honors went to Mike Parsons of Palm's Texaco Service, who scored 15 points for his team by winning the base run, the ball throw, and also his qualifying heat in the 50-yard dash. The finals for the 50-yard dash and 50-yard walk will be held at the All-City Track Meet on July 27. fred G. Vanderbilt's Social Outcast failed to frighten any of the major contenders from the race. A rundown of likely starters included Determine, Alidon, Mister Gus, Porterhouse and Trusting in addition to Social Outcast. Besides those, there was a chance that Rejected may go and the field could be increased by the addition of Six Fifteen, Marked Game and Novarullah. Bloomers, Juniors Play Cypress Nine Tomorrow afternoon and evening at the City Park the girls' softball teams from Cypress will play the Anaheim girls' teams. The Jr. Bloomer Girls will play at 1 p.m. This will be the second game for the local girls, having defeated Brea Olinda, 29-17, last Friday. The girls are being coached by Pinky Hamilton and are showing a great deal of improvement. The Bloomer Girls will play the defending champions of the O.E. G.S.L. at 7:00 Friday evening. So far this season, Cypress has a record of 2-1 with Anaheim having a 1-1 record. The purchase price of the lowest-priced Cadillac is actually little more than many models in the medium-price field. And then consider Cadillac's gasoline economy and upkeep expense. Few automobiles of any size or make will travel either on a gallon of gasoline... and the car is so soundly built and so soundly engineered that it is all but free from any save the most routine costs of maintenance. And, finally, there is the car's resale value. Year after year, Cadillac used cars return a higher percentage of the original investment than any other make.
