Morning Star Glides Past Spotlight HONOLULU (UP) — Richard S. Rheem's Morning Star, her every sail unfurled to catch the falling breeze, glided past a spotlight off Diamond Head early today, setting a new record in the Transpacific Yacht Race. To the cheers and whistles of 5000 Hawaiians parked along Diamond Head Road, the sleek yacht passed under the beam marking the finish line at 12:06 a.m. (3:06 a.m. PDT), lopping more than 19 hours off the old record. The Morning Star's official time for the 2225-mile crossing from Los Angeles Harbor to Diamond Head was 9 days, 15 hours, 5 minutes and 10 seconds. The 96-foot ketch established the present record of 10 days, 10 hours and 13 minutes in 1978. Her speed as she crossed the finish line was 10 knots, probably the slowest of the race. The Morning Star's handicap time for the race was 9 days, 1 hours, 30 minutes and 22 seconds. The fact that she crossed the finish line first did not necessarily mean that she won the race. The winner will not be named until all 50 boats in the race have crossed the finish line and their handicap times computed. Winds Diminished The Morning Star made first landfall on Oohu at 10:30 p.m. (1:30 a.m. PDT) when she passed Makapuu Point lighthouse under winds of 30 knots. The winds diminished as she swung around the point to the leeward side of the island and down toward the finish line. The ketch first came into view of the spectators lined along Diamond Head Road at 11:34 p.m. (2:34 a.m. PDT) when the spotlights of a Coast Guard patrol boat picked her out as she moved down the channel under full sail. The next yachts to cross the finish will be the Constellation, Ravona and Novia Del Mar. All have estimated their arrival time about 11 a.m. (2 p.m. PDT) for final promises to be the most thrilling second-place finish in the 18-year history of the race. All three boats are certain to join the Morning Star in holding the 1949 record. Tremendous Surge Early today, plotters gave edge to the Novia Del Mar 89-foot ketch owned by Joan Scripps of San Diego, on basis of a tremendous surge made in the past two days. "She's got everything a probably spitting against wind to get more speed one race official." After the next three cross-finish line, there will prove be a big lag before the boats appear. The Quest and the Tasco not reported since the start of the race. The Quest has sighted a couple of times by her boats in the race, but no has been heard about the T. The mystery boat of the catamaran Kaikiki Surri sighted at 6:30 p.m. yesterday (9:30 p.m. PDT) 300 miles south of the finish by the yacht pade. The Coast Guard was prepared to organize a search for the maran before she was found cause her skipper, Riohard J. head, is overdue on his trip from the Coast Guard in Hilo. Proposed by Councilman C. A. Higbie, Balboa Island, the new ordinance enlarged the area open to water skiers and diminished somewhat the bay open to speed boat owners. The line was moved southerly in Upper Bay to Station 112 on the map, or from a certain five-mph speed post easterly and southerly across to a sand pit in front (north) of Orange County boat launching ramp. Council also provided in the ordinance that speed-boats should stand clear of boats being launched from the ramp. The new law takes effect immediately and signs designating the enlarged water ski area will be posted by the city and harbormaster. ROD AND GUN Albacore Now or Never?? Veteran albacore observers expect this week to tell the story whether the albacore will come in locally or head out on the outside of San Clemenite Island by passing the local waters, as they did last year. The sport boat skippers rate chances high for a big season, one of the biggest on record. The albacore at the present time are scattered from Guadalupe Island, with the center of the vast school being near the Coronado Islands just off of San Diego. One commercial boat came into Newport Harbor last week with seven and a half tons of albacore. The fisherman stated that the school he fished in Mexico was 40 miles wide and 40 miles long, the biggest school of longfins he had seen since 1950. Another commercial boat hit the Newport docks with six tons aboard and his hands put up from pulling in the fish. He had all he could possibly carry. Other reports on the same line were made by the commercial boats. Up to date, the commercial boats have been taking the biggest catches with the sport boats doing only fair. The fish are hitting jigs the best, with few fish being taken on bait. The situation is expected to change as the season progresses. Yellow and white jap heads have been the best jigs. The Skippers remind fishermen o check their tackle before getting on the boat. More fish have been lost by bad line than anything else. Before going out, be sure to have good line. It is best to have two outfits when fishing albacore, a light outfit with 20 or 25 pound test line and an outfit for trolling with 40 or 45 pound test line. The new development in fishing is the usage of monofilament instead of M line. The mono actually saves money as you need not use a leader, just tie the hook on the monofilament.
