Teenage Sailor Reveals Opium Teenage Sailor Reveals Opium Smuggling Plot SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—A teenage Norwegian sailor told yesterday how he got mixed up in a blazer plot to smuggle three million dollars worth of heroin from Hong Kong to San Francisco. The seaman, Truls Halversen, 17, decided in mid-voyage not to take part in "such dirty things" and on the advice of a Brooklyn minister, Leif Aagard, turned the narcotics over to the master of his ship, the Fernhill. Halvorsen was the first witness in the opening of the narcotics conspiracy trial of Frank Lew, 67-year-old Chinese accused of being the San Francisco contact man for the narcotics ring. Lew was caught last May in a trap set by U.S. Customs agents and Halvorsen. He was seized while accepting a dummy package from the Norweig youth. Halvorsen said he was lured into the plot in Hong Kong by a Chinese tailor who came aboard to sell him a suit. When Halvorsen said he did not have enough money, the tailor then "asked me if I wanted to make some easy money smuggling opium into the United States." "I didn't say no," Halvorsen replied. He said he was promised $1200 if he would follow orders. Halvorsen said the tailor led him to four Chinese, who gave him five pounds of heroin in 10 small sacks and told him how to smuggle it off the ship. They also took his picture and gave him half a coupon which he was to match with the "consignee" in San Francisco. Once at sea, Halvorsen began to worry about what he had gotten into. He wrote his minister in Brooklyn to a letter which said in part: "I curved myself for having wanted to take part in such dirty to lie in with the preview showing. Bob Crosby, whose son attends St. Catherine, has reportedly agreed to bring a number of Hollywood stars and notables to the showing. Funds from the benefit showing will go to a building fund for the Father Maguire Chapel. It was at St. Catherine's that most of the picture was taken. Folsom, newly-named secretary of health, education and welfare, may step up the flow of news from his widespread department. Reporters have found Folsom easy to reach during his government service. The department's retiring secretary, Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby, often has been inaccessible to newsmen. President Elsenhower Wednesday nominated Folsom, now treasury undersecretary, to succeed Mrs. Hobby, the only woman cabinet member in his administration. Mrs. Hobby is leaving Aug. 1 because of the serious illness of her husband, former Texas Gov. William P. Hobby. She will take his place as president of the Houston Post Publishing Co. Answers Questions Freely Reporters could recall no news conference Folsom held on his own at the Treasury Department. But he usually sat in on Treasury Secretary George M. Humphrey's news conferences and answered questions freely. Newsmen also could reach him by telephone. Mrs. Hobby has held six news conferences during her 30 months in office. Only her first, in April, 1953, and her last, in February of this year, were open to questions on all subjects. The others were limited to discussions of specific legislation.
