Festival of Arts Preview Held for County Chambers
With a sneak preview of Laguna Beach's "Pageant of the Masters" as an interesting part of the evening, the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange County held their annual dinner "Under the Stars" with installation of officers at Irvine Bowl in Laguna Beach, Tuesday night.
Major General C. F. Schilt of the U. S. Marine Corps, installed Lee Winterton of San Clemente as president; retired U.S. Admiral, John R. McKinney of Laguna Beach as vice-president; R. C. Schweitzer of Huntington Beach, treasurer; and William Gallenne, executive secretary. Also introduced was the important finance committee; Howard Crooke, George Ellers, Paul Kroesen, Fred Krein and Justin Kennedy. Selim Franklin, retiring president, was presented a certificate of service by Willis Warner of the County Board of Supervisors.
The preview of the Festival of Arts consisted of the presentation without the usual music, of a few of the paintings and objects darts made with living models which will be shown nightly at Irvine Bowl beginning July 16 for a month. Russ Porter, the well-known regular commentator for the festival
Sale of Savings Bonds Increases in County
Investments in U. S. Savings Bonds in Orange County last month were more than one-third higher than those of May a year ago, Harry L. Hanson, volunteer county bond chairman reported today.
Sales in the county of Series E and H bonds in May this year amounted to $346,066, a gain of 46 per cent over purchases of $236,921 in the like month of 1954.
The county's support of the Treasury Department program last month brought total sales for the year to $2,725,813 as compared to $1,533,415 in the first five months a year ago. A 77.8 per cent increase, it represents, Hanson said, a high point in sales in the county for any five-month period in peace-time years.
The county's rate of gain for the year, he continued, is more than double the Southern California average and more than four times the national trend as of May end.
Sales of Series H bonds to individuals desiring current income contributed $87,500 to the May total and $983,500 in the five-month county figure. This, Hanson stated is a 156.8 per cent increase over January-May of last year.
was on hand to comment on the displays; and at one time to present an interesting and unusual back-stage scene where an already-shown picture was being dismantled and a new picture was assembled right before the eyes of the audience, even to the adjusting of the automatic frame.
Twenty-eight chambers were represented by several hundred people.
The committee in charge of the evening was Gordon Strachan.
