Complicated Suit, Involving Famed Flier, Underway SANTA ANA (OCNS) -- World famed flier Paul Mantz yesterday was involved in a Superior Court Department 4 lawsuit growing out of an explosion and fire on Balboa Island July 25, 1953. Actually, four actions are going in the complicated case. Mr. and Mrs. Mantz have named Joseph A. Beek, beach pioneer and owner of the Balboa Ferry; Shell Oil Co., Jack S. Nelson and John L. Stamets as defendants. The plaintiffs charge the blast and insuing blaze was a result of careless and negligent maintenance of property by the defendants. Mantz, at the time of the fire, was leasing 400, 402 and 404 South Bay Front from Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Kelley. The Mantz couple asks a total of $26,429.97 damages. Beek has brought suit against Shell, Nelson Stamets and the Mantz duo. He claims he was leasing property from Carol B. Beek at 406, and 410 South Bay Front when the blast occurred. Beek contends that Mantz allowed faulty gas connections to exist, permitting vapors to gather and cause the explosion. Beek seeks $12,000 damages. Beek also has sued the Kelleys for $12,000. The Kelleys are after $6677.88 damages from Shell, Beek, Nelson and Stamets.
