PCL BASEBALL NOTES Art Rosenbaum of the San Francisco Chronicle carried this bit: "Oakland-pitcher Jim Atkins and San Diego manager Lefty O'Doul almost squared off last week during the Oaks-Padres fuss in Bordertown. They met at an airport later and O'Doul made the first advance. "Still mad, Rocky?" he hailed. Then O'Doul explained, in O'Douting he really wasn't. "Wa-a-al," said Atkins, admitting he really wasn't. Then O'Doul explained in O'Doull fashion, how it was all a glorious mistake. "When I came toward the mound, I had my hand up to my ear," he made nearlogic. "Now, if I had wanted to fight, I would have held my hand protecting my chin. You see how it was. Rocky? Who ever heard of anyone leading a right to the ear?" Atkins went away from there not 100 per cent sure except to say, "Y'know, that O'Doul is a talented man." Joe Gordon, the old batting master, now a scout for Dertoit, recently spent 40 minutes with Tommy Glaviano of Sacramento, trying to snap the Senatorial inflelder out of his slump. Joe admonished Tommy to wait on the ball and soon had Glaviano meeting the br" better than he has all spring...The Native Sons and Daughters of the Shallock Records Ninth Victory as Oaks Top Rainiers SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—If the New York Yankees wished to atone for the way they treated Charley Dressen and his Duffers in the last two World Series they couldn't have shipped him a better peace offering than Artie Schallock. The little left handler, who was optioned to Oakland a month ago, rolled to his ninth victory in coast league competition last night by blanking Seattle 5-0 in the northwest city. The triumph moved Schallock up to the top on Dressen's hurling list and also nudged the third place Oaks to within 5½ games of league leading Hollywood. The Stars and runnerup San Deigo both muffed chances to get fat on second division clubs. Cellar bound Portland clipped Hollywood 6-5 in 11 innings while Los Angeles murdered the Padres 10 to 4. Another shutout was registered by Ken Holcombe, veteran San Francisco rightie, who subdued Sacramento 7-0. Schallock gave up eight hits but was helped along by four double plays. Bob Hall, whose muscles recently were transferred from Hollywood to Seattle, was battered for four runs in the third inning and beamed Oakland catcher Lennie Neal while loading the bases in the fourth. Neal was taken off the field on a stretcher but recovered consciousness almost immediately and was not reported in danger. Portland defeated Hollywood in the Vaughn Street Park when Fletcher Robb singled in the 11th ports, the North is going all out to record its first victory in this third renewal of the annual affair... Baptists Snatch Head by Trimming Sacred Heart, 2-1 FORE! ... by Wally Taft The Hacienda Country Club Men's championship has narrowed down to the semi-finals with Chuck Soper, Whittier, defeating Houston Kier, Anaheim, on the 18th green two up. Soper had a rough time with Kier although he out-drove the Anaheim golfer from 20 to 30 yards off the tee. Houston Kier is not a long hitter but very straight and a very consistent man around the greens. In the third flight Andy Lohman, Balboa, defeated T. A., "Letty" Beeson, Buena Park, on the 18th green one up and will meet Bill Lassielum. Whittier, in the finals of the third flight this weekend. In the seventh flight Leon Gallilan, Placentia, edged Vic Hardin, Bellflower, two and one and will match shots against Luke Johnson, Montebello, in the finals of the flight this week. FORE— Three Anaheim golfers are very much is presence at the Irvine Coast Country Club and are giving this golf game a fit, they are Warren Lampman, Art and Ted Shipkey. With power the Shipkey brothers possess, it is best to stand your distance when Art and Ted tee off, as the breeze from their powerful swings are apt to jar the average person somewhat, if they aren't aware of what is happening. Big Ed Goddard, Huntington Beach, the former All-American football player, won first place with a 63 as Wally Taft, Costa Mesa, placed second with a 64 while Lew Gifford, Long Beach, placed third with 66. FORE— The hats-off department this week goes to Vern Packard, Pullerton, who aced the 205 yard 8th hole with a two iron at Willowcik Sunday afternoon. The 8th hole is one of the most difficult holes on the Willowick course so Vern sure didn't pick one of the easier holes to score hi ace on. In the foursome with Packard were Jess Medaris of Anaheim and E Cummings and A. Rietcel of Fullerton. FORE— Red Hazzard, the former ball player from Buena Park was on his stick over the weekend as Red tourney with a net 64. In winning first place Hazzard scored a gross 71 which is excellent for a seven handicapper, Jim Patterson, Santa Ana, placed second with a net 65 as three golfers tied for third with net 66's; they were Paul Southgate, Long Beach; Cecil Roberts, La Habra; and Pat Hart, Santa Ana. Louie Clem, Garden Grove, took the measure of Barry Giffen, Anaheim, on the eighth green two up, as Jerry Ritchie was knocked out of the tourney by Tommy McLean, Santa Ana, by the score of two up. The Hunting Beach Men's club held its first string tournament last week-end and quite a time was had by all contestants. A string tourney works this way; each player gets a foot of string for every handicap stroke he has, if a player has a ten handicap, he receives ten feet of string. If a golfer misses a putt by twelve inches he can cut off twelve inches of his string and take one stroke off his score. When the string is all gone the played is on his own, it is a lot of fun as you never know if you are cutting off the correct amount of string. Some players ran out of string while other players had the correct amount of string.
