Bus Driver Fined $500 For Drunk Driving
Final outcome of the case of the bus driver who led Fullerton police on a merry chase last Mar. 21, was written in the Anaheim-Fullerton Municipal Court today when Judge Tiday required Francis S. Carpenter, 48, of Compton, to pay a fine of $500.
Carpenter, a driver for Metropolitan Coach Linek, was nabbed after a hot chase at high speeds through the heart of Fullerton by two police cars. He was later booked on six counts of traffic violations including drunk driving. During a preliminary hearing, many of the bus passengers told of their harrowing experiences as the heavy vehicle swung back and forth through the heavily traveled streets with Carpenter at the wheel, attempting to flee the pursuing police cars.
Later, changing a plea of not guilty to one of guilty the prosecutor dismissed five of the six counts, with Carpenter held on the drunk driving count. He was given a term of six months in jail plus the $500 fine and placed on probation for three years; the jail term suspended. He is to violate no laws, use no liquor or narcotics and drive no public vehicle on terms of Judge Tiday's probation.
