Petrov Blasts Auss Charges Of Embezzlement MELBOURNE, Australia (UP)—Vladimir M. Petrov, Soviet Embassy secret police chief granted asylum here with his wife, branded as "a filthy lie and slander" Soviet charges that he sought political asylum because he had embezzled "large sums of money." They do it often accusing innocent people of murder, theft and other offenses when they themselves are in difficulties," Petrov said. "This Soviet method is very old and has outlived its usefulness." Petrov turned himself over to Australian authorities voluntarily last April while on an embassy mission and gave them documents and information on a Soviet spy ring operating in Australia. At least 70 persons were named in the evidence. His testimony was given before the royal commission investigating Soviet espionage. Mrs. Petrov, a Soviet Embassy code clerk, asked for and was granted asylum as she was being forced aboard a plane by armed Soviet couriers. The Soviet government, which broke off relations with Australia over the incident, first charged Petrov was kidnapped. Then it demanded his return as a common criminal who had stolen embassy funds. Petrov said in a statement to the royal commission that auditors told his wife his accounts were correct and handed her a receipt after he disappeared. Later officials told her a large sum of money might be found missing, he said. Kidnap Hoax LOS ANGELES (UP)—A young mother who thought her husband did not love their infant son left the baby with a chance acquaintance and then reported it had been kidnapped, police said today. The hoax was discovered late yesterday after a telephone call revealed the mother, Mrs. Dolores Pantoja, 25, left her month-old son with a woman she had met at Children's hospital. Police had canvassed the Highland Park area after Mrs. Pantoja reported the youngest of her three children was kidnapped from her car in a parking lot. A telephone call to Juvenile Detention Center four hours after the reported kidnap disclosed the infant had been left with Mrs. Teresa Franklin. Mrs. Franklin said she offered to keep him temporarily because his mother appeared emotionally upset. She called the center when Mrs. Pantoja failed to return. Mrs. Irene Gardner, a juvenile officer, said Mrs. Pantoja feared her auto mechanic husband did not love the baby because he "wanted her third child to be a girl instead of a boy." Pantoja said there was no basis for his wife's fears. Police said the district attorney's office would determine whether any charges will be lodged against Mrs. Pantoja for filing the kidnap report. She was permitted to return to her home pending a decision by the district attorney. The boy was taken to General hospital. The official said the names were dug up by the administration during its two-month investigation of abuses in the federal housing program and turned over to the committee for possible use during the hearings. He said the names include former high Democratic housing officials and "prominent" members of the party. This brought a blunt warning to Republicans from Sen. Burnet R. FOR OUR ALLIES — Asst. Quarles (above) appears before joint congressional atomic energy committee with Defense Department request for authority to give United States' Allies information on "design and fabrication" of our atomic weapons, as well as their size, weight and shape. Such a strategy, Maybank told a reporter, would boomerang on the GOP because "the record will show that Republicans got most of the money" involved in the multimillion dollar scandals. Maybank's warning came as the committee resumed its investigation of housing program abuses involving millions of dollars in "windfall profits" reaped by builders through excessive loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration.
