Gray Runner-Up
In Zone Contest
Of Toastmasters
Britt Gray, 705 South Pine St., representing Anaheim Toastmasters Club No. 2 was awarded runner up honors at the International Toastmasters Zone D Speech Contest. The contest was held Saturday evening at San Marino.
In a very close decision Gray was chosen alternate speaker to the winner, Vance Carruth of Los Angeles. Carruth, an active minister of many years, was fortunate in picking by lot a religious subject as his speech topic.
Zone D includes all of Southern California and the state of Arizona. Other contestants were Sgt. Major Gerald P. Pinn of Vamp Pendleton and John Grace of Arizona.
Gray presented an inspirational speech on "What Americanism Means to Me." A large contingent of local club members and their drives went to San Marino to support him and congratulate him on his well earned sunner-up victory.
In the history of Anaheim Toastmasters Club Gray's progress was the furtherest made by a representative of the club in the International Toastmasters speech contests. If the Zone victor, Carruth is not able to participate, Gray will represent Southern California and Arizona in the Pacific Coast speakoff at Sacramento, June 26.

Southland Soil Men, Farmers Meet
To Discuss Productivity of Land
"What Can Be Done to Increase Productivity of Local Soils was the main topic paramount in the minds of Southern California soil men and farmers when they gathered for a round-table discussion on Saturday, at the Greenbrier Inn in Garden Grove.

The group came to two basic conclusions. The first, that three major problems face the grower today. The number one problem is (1) the difficulty in getting manures and fertilizers to break-down so that the food values can be released and made available to the crops. The number two problem is (2) lack of good water penetration. The number three problem is (3) soil compaction and poor soil structure.
The second basic conclusion was that: "If the grower is using good farming practices and a balanced fertilization program and his yield is down and the size and quality of his crop is poor, then all indications point to an unhealthy soil condition which should be corrected.
Eugene H. Benvau of Anaheim, president of the company that represents the new enzyme catalyst soil conditioner, Pent-a-vate, discovered by R. W. Dickenson of Anaheim, was the main speaker.
Benvau said: "Yield, size and quality are the most important factors determining profit. Two of the most important factors influencing yield are the physical condition of the soil and the readily available supply of moisture. Many times, sufficient water is used but the soil structure is so poor that in the case of, for instance trees, roots can't get enough water and fruit sizes tend..."

Activity of Local Soils in Southern California a round-table discussion Grove. The first, that three to become small and yield is poor.
During the past six years," continued Benvau, "those farmers who have been using the new multi-enzyme soil conditioner for tree or row crops have found that even the worst of these problems can be helped. Others are using this catalyst to get all-round performance from their soils and to prevent water and fertilizer waste. Following its enzyme principles when applied to the soil, water and air are able to penetrate and moisture is maintained; the soil becomes crumb-like in texture; with the improvement of the soil structure the micro-organic life is activated and by catalytic action, minerals and organics are changed and digested into plant food combinations and ener-
Children Warned To Beware of Adult 'Assassins'
With the closing of schools for the summer and the consequent added traffic hazards caused by proglandance of youngsters on streets and playgrounds, the California Safety Council, in its statewide traffic safety crusade gives an unusual "twist" to the psychology of traffic safety appeals.
Usually, the appeal has been made to the operators of motor vehicles.
Now the safety council appeals to the kids to beware of their adult assassins who reduced their number by more than 200 during the 1953 summer vacation period.
Boys and girls are asked to assume responsibility when crossing the streets and to exercise the same courtesy and consideration toward the ongoing traffic as they would like to have the automobile driver show toward them.
It'a practical and workable idea!
The safety council offers a series of interesting suggestions, too:
1. Always use the traffic crosswalk; don't cross in the middle of the block.
2. Don't be a "straggle crosser." Cross by groups where a group is together. Otherwise wait for a break in the traffic.
3. Use the playground. Don't play in the street.
4. Be the kind of a pedestrian a motorist will be "happy" to be courteous to.
The California Safety council is currently conducting a traffic safety campaign to secure more
