MOULLE United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON (UP)—President Eisenhower hurried into the White House air raid shelter today to take refuge from a fleet of imminent atomic bombers attacking United States in the biggest defense drill since World War II. The eerie wall of sirens sounded the red alert in the Capital promptly at 10:01 a.m. EDT. By arranging plan traffic was halted on all downtown streets and polled pedestrians into shelter. Mr. Eisenhower, who was working at his White House desk when the alert sounded, got up immediately and walked quickly with members of his staff and hundreds of White House workers to the derground shelter. He was joined there by Mrs. Eisenhower. Times Square Cleared The chief executive and rank members of his staff have worked quarters in the shelter. During a drill, they worked at their desks and tested telephone, teletype and short wave radio facilities linking the shelter with the outside world. Simultaneously, civil defender workers in New York set a record by clearing Times Square within 70 seconds after the siren sounded. The operation, in which some 3000 persons were directed into shelters, was carried out 30 seconds less time than was required at the last civil defense test. In the realistic New York exercise, passengers boarding a Norwegian west Airlines plane for Seattle were quickly disembarked and sent to shelter at Idlewild Airport. 41 Cities Involved The "attack" by 1 ore than 9 hypothetical enemy bombers was presumed to have struck 41 major cities in the United States and eight in Canada. Most ambitious program of public participation was in Mobile Ala., where some 26,000 people were to be evacuated from downtown area to the outskirts. Although Mr. Eisenhower interrupted his office routine for about half an hour to participate in the drill, congressional leaders sailed House and Senate committees. Two Believed Drowned in Sinking; Stunt Man Swims 10 Miles to Shore LOS ANGELES (UP) — An ex-lifeguard told today how he survived the sinking of a power cruiser, in which two other men were believed drowned, by swimming 10 miles through heavy seas to Catalina Island. The survivor, Paul Stader, 43, also a movie stunt man, stumbled ashore at Catalina's Emerald Bay after almost 21 hours in the water, gasped "My buddies are out there. Go get them!" He then collapsed from exhaustion. The Coast Guard launched an immediate search for the two missing men who were aboard the 18-foot Tinker Toy IV with Stader when the boat sank Saturday 10 miles off the island in Catalina Channel. Missing were Hugo Walters, 31, another movie stunt man and ex-lifeguard, and Don McGuire, 27, Hollywood. Coast Guard cutters located the sinking scene, finding a pair of Stader's water skis and a cushion from the ill-fated craft. Stader wore a pair of swimming fins on his feet and diving goggles, without which, a Coast Guard spokesman said, "he probably never could have made it at all." "But even with that equipment, it was somewhat of a miracle," the spokesman said. "The seas were pretty rough and he was fighting a strong current." Stader said he, Walters and McGuire all started out for land on floating cushions from the boat, which they had tied together. But they moved so slowly, Stader said, that each man decided to take out for himself.
