McCarthy Resting Carr went to the witness chair in the 33rd day of the Army-McCarthy hearings and gave his first testimony of the hearings. He was a substitute for McCarthy, who was excused temporarily to rest up from a weekend speaking trip to the Midwest. Carr's testimony was marked by flat contradictions of sworn testimony given earlier by Stevens and Adams. Carr said: 1. Stevens proposed last Oct. 2 to use Schine as his personal observer in Army intelligence schools. 2. Adams told him on Oct. 21 that he (Adams) would "take control" over the Army's assignment of Schine after his induction on Nov. 3. Picture With Schine 3. Both Adams and Stevens on Nov. 6 mentioned that the Air Force and Navy had "security situations that would bear looking into." At the same time, Carr said, Stevens told McCarthy he would have to quit as secretary if the subcommittee went through with proposed public hearings on Fort Monmouth. He was captured a short time later by other officers who were part of the huge dragnet that raced to the scene. When detectives lodged the two recaptured escapees in their car and shook them down for weapons, they didn't find anything. However, after booking them in the county jail, the officers returned to their patrol car to find a ground-down rat-tail file lodged in the back seat.
