Planners Approve Five Businesses
SANTA ANA — Handling a short agenda at its weekly session, the Orange County Planning Commission approved five new business enterprises and set June 23, 2 p.m. as the date for a public hearing on another.
Proposal of Walter C. Yoder to excavate 10 acres at the junction of Talbert Ave. and Golden West Ave., north of Huntington Beach, was the project set for hearing.
Yoder's application stated that the excavating was merely to level the ground to conform to the surrounding landscape, by cutting away a portion of a hill. But the commission staff reported that such was not the case; that there would be a permanent excavation, also a truck traffic hazard at the street corner.
The commission recommended favorably on the following applications:
D. J. Pourtales, nursery south side of Garden Grove Blvd., east of Pal St., Garden Grove.
William M. Power, retail garden and patio supplies, north side of Garden Grove blvd., east of West St.
Evelyn Kennedy, beauty shop in front of existing building, south side of Dorothy Ave., west of Taft St., limited to one chair and one operator.
R. M. Tillis, plastering business, south side of Garedn Grove Blvd., east of Hansen Ave., office building, 20 by 40 feet in dimensions, to be erected.
Shell Oil Co., service station, southwest corner of Whittier Blvd. and La Mirada Ave., La Habra.

Shot Makes Sales Talk More Convincing
BERKELEY, Calif. — Paul B. McCracken was listening to a sales talk from a life insurance salesman last night.
"Anything can happen at any time," said salesman Howard C. Martin, "and you should be prepared for it."
Just then, a bullet shattered the window in the McCracken apartment, struck a radio, ricocheted to the wall and fell to the floor at McCracken's feet.
Police said the bullet came from the gun of Hollis L. Berg, 25, who was trying to take his life two houses away after falling to reconcile with his wife, Madeline.
Standing in the kitchen of his home, Berg placed the gun at his left side and pulled the trigger. The gun sprayed shots in all directions as Berg spun around, unable to let go.
One bullet inflicted a minor wound on Berg as it sailed into the McCracken apartment.
As the bullet dropped to the floor, salesman Martin handed McCracken a policy and a pen.
McCracken signed.

Controversial Bids of Roosevelt,
Condon Spice Tuesday's Primaries
By JAMES C. ANDERSON
United Press Staff Correspondent
SAN FRANCISCO — The controversial congressional bids of Democrats James Roosevelt and Robert L. Condon lent excitement today to next Tuesday's California primary election.
Roosevelt, beset by his wife's charges that he was unfaithful with a dozen women, faced challenges from nine other candidates in his attempt to win the nomination from Los Angeles' 26th district.
Condon, barred by the Atomic Energy Commission from witnessing the Nevada A-bomb tests for security reasons, was embroiled in a nip-and-tuck contest for a second term in Congress against an opponent who almost beat him in the 1952 election.
Both Roosevelt and Condon were denied financial aid in their campaigns by the Democratic National Committee.
Representatives Race
Nominations for 30 seats in the House of Representatives are at stake in the primary, as well as bids for the state's constitutional offices, 100 berths in the Legislature and a two-year term in the U. S. Senate, a post now held by Republican Thomas H. Kuchel.
Roosevelt's wife, Romelle, declared an armistice until after the election in her torrilla divorce battle with Roosevelt.
Roosevelt's marital troubles have vied with his liberal Democratic political philosophy as a paramount issue in his campaign. Earlier this week, Republican Richard Westbrook withdrew and threw his support to Democrat Ned Redding in order to prevent lengthy ballot matched Republican Gov. Goodwin J. Knight, a flamboyant campaigner of the old school, against Democrat Richard P. Graves, for 20 years the head of the politically influential League of California Cities.
Two factors—one old, one new muddled the election picture.
One was California's confusing system of cross-filling in which a candidate may seek both major party nominations in the primary. If he wins both, he does not have to face a November runoff.
All major candidates in Tuesday's voting test have cross-filled. However, this year, for the first time, each candidate's political party will be listed after his name on the ballot.
Addition of the party label on the ballot was expected to make it more difficult for candidates to win both major party nominations.
An extremely light vote was forecast. Although registration totaled 5,664,688, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans by 763,592, the Secretary of State's Office predicted only about 50 per cent of the voters would cast ballots.

Roosevelt's marital troubles have vied with his liberal Democratic political philosophy as a paramount issue in his campaign.
Earlier this week, Republican Richard Westbrook withdrew and threw his support to Democrat Ned Redding in order to prevent the "national calamity" of a Roosevelt victory.
Close Election
Republican Theodore Owings, one of Roosevelt's nine opponents, said "the voters want a moral family man."
Condon's main opponent is John F. Baldwin, Jr., a Martinez, Calif., attorney. Republican Baldwin lost to Condon two years ago by only 2012 votes out of a total of 173,000 cast in the 6th district.
Condon's loyalty has been the prime issue in Baldwin's campaign as well as that of Al L. Day, another Democrat in the race. Day said the district needed a Congressman who "is not under suspicion and whose loyalty is unquestioned."
Condon denies he is or ever has been a Communist. He has been telling the voters he is the victim of a "smear campaign."
Kuchel, appointed to the Senate by former Gov. Earl Warren, faced a challenge from Congressman Sam W. Yorty, Los Angeles Democrat. With Republicans and Democrats currently balanced at 47 seats apiece in the Senate, the Kuchel-Yorty Race was watched with great interest by both parties.
