Redd Harper to Be in Garden Grove Library Chats by Martha Mettler Anaheim can be justly proud of the local artist and illustrator, Ruth Ives (Mrs. Stanley Kaufman). Three books have recently come from the press illustrated by her. The "First Book of Prayers," by May Juergans, "Cinderella," retold by Evelyn Andreas, and "The Story of Clara Barton," by Olive Price. The last named book is illustrated in pen and ink sketches. The Junior Library will have on display for a short time some of the illustrations done for these books. Miss Haskett, our Junior Librarian, says that her work reveals fine craftsmanship, careful study for detail, exquisite coloring and her children almost walk from the pages they are so lifelike. New Books "The Indomitable Mrs. Trollope," by Ellen Bigland, is zestful, sparkling biography of a phenomenal woman and writer. She is known to Americans mainly as the-author of that caustic 1832 best-seller "Domestic Manners of the Americans." and as the mother of the famous Anthony Trollope. Rising every morning at five to turn out more than fifty books of fiction and travel, she became a legend in her own time. "Seduction of the Innocents," by Frederic Wetham, is the completely detailed report of the findings of a famed psychiatrist on the pernicious influence of comic books on the youth of today. No parent Redd Harper, versatile Western sinking star of the silver screen and noted for his characterizations in Billy Graham's "Mr. Texas" and "Oil Town, U.S.A." will be the guest speaker for Garden Grove Baptist Brotherhood Tuesday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Violette Hall. The occasion is the annual Father and Son banquet when the men of the Brotherhood entertain the members of the Christian Boy's club as well as their school friends. Harper has just returned from London where he participated in the great meetings being conducted by Evangelist Billy Graham. An additional feature of the evening will be the screening of a recent film taken of the London Crusade showing scenes of the great meetings and outstanding leaders of Britain and America. Harper will also sing a number of both Western and Christian numbers accompanying himself in his own inimitable style on his guitar. The dinner-program is open to any father who would like to attend and bring his son, or borrow one for the occasion. Men may call the church office, Lehigh 9-1923, and a boy will be supplied. That an understanding of God as all-in-all heals, comforts, and saves, will be stressed. In the Gospel of Luke is recorded the healing by Christ Jesus of the man with the withered hand. Jesus said unto the man "Rise up, and stand forth in the midst." Then he questioned the Pharisees, saying "Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?" And ... he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so; and his hand was restored whole as the other." "Mind produces all action," declares Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." And she counsels, "Tell the sick that they can meet disease fearlessly, if they only realize that divine Love gives them all power over every physical action and condition." The Golden Text is from Revelation: "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." PENTECOST Festival Zion Lutheran Topic For Sunday Morning The Pentecost, the festival of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 50 days after Easter, will be observed at next Sunday morning's service at Zion Lutheran Church, Rev. The arrangements for tables and like are supervised by Dick Henning, appointed by the Men's club. Parsonage Bought Wesley Methodist church of Anaheim has acquired a new parsonage. It is the former Paul J. Czapla home at 818 South Palm St. The house is approximately three and one half years old and has two bedrooms, with the large yard landscaped. As the June conference for California and Arizona Methodist churches convenes soon at Redlands University, the Rev. McKinley Walker, pastor of the Wesley Methodist church, does not plan to move into the parsonage unless he is returned to the Anaheim church as its pastor. Appointments of pastorates are made at the final sessions of the conference. Under the leadership of many of the churches and their pastors the "Jamboree" will begin at 8 p.m., following graduation exercises, and run until 2 a.m. Adequate sponsorship will be provided throughout the evening. In throwing the hall open for the unusual occasion the Rev. Harold Alexander, pastor of the First Baptist church, which will host to the throng of visitors, addressed letters to 100 pastors in the County. "The response has been good and large groups of youth are planning to attend from Costa Mesa, Downey, Buena Park, Santa Ana, Fullerton, Yorba Linda, Brea, La Habra and Anaheim. Others are yet to be heard from. It is important to note that the youth are coming from many different denominational groups. The program is merely an effort to give the youth a good time with proper supervision." said the pastor. Following an initial get-acquainted period the evening will begin with the showing of the outstanding film starring Coleen Townsend Evans, entitled "The Great Discovery." The film has been widely acclaimed wherever shown. Miss Townsend forsook her life as a Hollywood actress and has given her time entirely to the making of religious films. The public is invited to attend. White Temple Slates Series on Beatitudes A new summer sermon series on each of the eight Beatitudes begins at the White Temple Methodist church Sunday morning at both the nine and eleven o'clock services. The Rev. Frank E. Butterworth announces that this series will endeavor to illustrate the inherent joy in the Christian way of life, despite outer frustrations and difficulties. The opening message will be on the theme, "Unspolling God's Children." "The eight Beatitudes in Matthew are actually a summary of the major chronological events in the life of Jesus and of His reaction to them," states the minister. "As such, they are for us the supreme guide for our own attitudes to life. That's why they may well be called the 'be-attitudes.'" A special feature at the nine o'clock service will be the final appearance for this school year of the children's Chapel choir, directed by Mrs. Bessie Gray.
