To Discuss Unpaid S. S Teachers Place
The place of the unpaid lay teacher in the thousands of Sunday schools of Protestant churches across the United States will be the subject of a "Convention on Christian Education" in Cleveland, Ohio, from July 27 to 31 of next year (1955).
There are 30,000,000 Protestants enrolled in these schools, and the National Council of Churches' division of Christian education, which sponsors the Convention, is concerned with strengthening the volunteer educational ministry. It is also concerned that only about half the nation's children are now under any religious instruction, and it hopes to plan to widen the reach of the church schools. According to the Rev. Loren Walters of Chicago, who heads the group planning the Convention, it will be attended by some 10,000 teachers, superintendents, and educational leaders.

Science Sermon Overcomes Evil With Good
"Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." This admonition of Paul to the Romans is the golden text commencing the lesson-sermon at all Christian Science churches Sunday. The subject is "Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced."
How man's trust in God preserves him from the attacks of evil is pointed out in a Bible selection from Psalms: "Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man... They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' polson is under their lips...Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth... Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name; the upright shall dwell in thy presence."
On this subject Mary Baker Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "The necromancy of yesterday foreshadowed the mesmerism and hypnotism of today." "Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His power is neither animal nor human."

White Temple Hits Halfway Mark
In their campaign for $175,000 to remodel and enlarge their church school and sanctuary and to build a new Fellowship hall, White Temple Methodist church announced at the third report meeting this week that half of the goal had been reached, exactly on schedule.
Over $87,000 has been registered to date on the giant thermometer erected on the church at the corner of Broadway and Philadelphia streets. The team headed by Wayne and Harriet Held is leading the race for fund-raising honors so far. Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Visel brought in the largest sum for their team at this particular report session.
Boys and girls of the primary through junior high departments were assigned the project last week of seeing how much they could earn by their own ingenious devices for the building campaign. In a processional down the church alley during the Sunday morning worship services they turned in $108 earned by various schemes. One lad had sold the eggs from his pet hen. Three junior high girls had spent all of Sunday afternoon baking cookies, and on Monday they sold them throughout the neighborhood. Other children carried trash, washed cars or sold vegetables.
