Approve Purchase of Colorado River Water
SANTA ANA—Orange County Supervisors late Thursday approved the purchase of 25,000-acre feet of Colorado River water by the Orange County Flood Control District and will levy a special district tax estimated at five cents per $100 of assessed valuation to pay $250,000 for the water.
The decision to buy the outside water for replenishment of the underground basin, depleted by annual overdrafts through years of drought, was made in the face of vigorous protests from Oland W. Carrick, San Clemente councilman and candidate for the assembly.
Carrick, who appeared with Attorney James Monroe, objected that the tax was unfair to portions of the flood control district, such as San Clemente, which do not draw their water from the Santa Ana river basin.
Monroe also attacked constitutionality of the special flood district tax for the importation of outside water.
The supervisors while ordering the water purchased, bought only half the amount that Orange County Water District officials wanted the Flood Control District to buy. Chairman Willis Warner, with other board members in agreement, said that the water district soon will be leaving a special pump tax on all water wells in the basin for the purpose of importing water. He did not think, he said, that the flood control district could sink 10,000-acre feet in the spreading grounds before the water district started receiving Colorado River water.

NBC Plans Huge Program for TV

NEW YORK (UP)—The spree of 90-minute color extrafaganzas on which the National broadcasting System will embark in the fall will add up to 39 such shows for the 1954-55 season.
The vast majority of television viewers will see these "spectaculars" in the customary black and white, of course, but NBC believes there will be thousands of color sets in use by fall and that the super-shows "will make color really appreciated," additionally spurring the sale of color receivers.
But whether received in tints or monochrome, the NBC shows are intended to be on such a grand scale of showmanship that, in theory at least, no one will want to miss them.
The programs will utilize Saturday, Sunday and Monday night segments.
Hutton In Opener
The first of these will be on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. EDT under the direction of Max Liebman in his revised format for "Your Show Of Shows." Betty Hutton, screen star who so far has avoided TV, will be the star of the opener, which is to be an original musical written just for her.
Liebman will do all these color shows in the Sunday spot every fourth Sunday. In addition he will produce a 90-minute color program every fourth Saturday from 9 to 10:30 p.m., the period "Your Show Of Shows" has used for six seasons. The first of these will be on Sept. 25.
The third set of spectaculars is that under the direction of Leland Hayward, stage and movie producer who took a successful workout in television last June when he produced the Ford Anniversary Show.
The first of these will be done early in October, one every fourth Monday in the 8 to 9:30 p.m. slot.
All "Live" Shows
All of these shows, of course, will be presented live. To prepare for them, NBC is turning the huge former Warner Brothers movie house into a new police officer wagon on the Anaheim Police station, according to Cline Mark A. Stephenson.
Appointment of Willis Gess, 30, a resident of Palm St., was approved Council on request of department. Burgess, the place of Patrolman Strate who resigned...

Optimists Hear Gangster Who Turned Preacher
Anaheim Optimists heard the story of the "Little Church on the Eastside" and its legendary preacher-pal ex gangster-gambler, Rev. A. M. "Andy" Griffin, as told by the Emanuel Methodist Church chief assistant, Rev. Albert Ehrke, at the regularly scheduled Thursday night d'ner meeting held in the Optimist Youth Center Building.
Rev. Andy Griffin reformed hoodlum, whose career was dramatized recently on a nationwide TV program entitled "This is Your Life", came to the Los Angeles eastside church located at 830 South Herbert Street five years ago. A dying church with but nine staunch members, the membership count now is approximately thirty adults on Sundays with a crowded full week church youth calendar serving over 200 tough pavement kids the other six days.
Andy and Al. the ministers who are devoting their lives to working with 39 tough gangs recently tagged by newscasters as ratpacks in the Los Angeles teeming eastside, put in an around the clock "friend of the boy" day. Ever ready to lend a hand to a youth in trouble, their week is a full one. Monday finds them helping a group of ten year olds make model planes with time out for playground games. Tuesday is the day set for the kids' band session. Wednesday the gospel leaders conduct a charm school for girls. Thursday sees the "Addicts Anonymous" strengthening their will power to fight the drug habit by literally "hooking on to Heaven and holding on to God's handi-
