Also adding in the supervision of children will be off-shift members of the Anaheim Fire Department and those firemen who have worked with Fire Chief Ed Stringer through the year in the fire prevention program.
The local program has brought Anaheim nation-wide fame through publicity given the fire prevention work in columns of the Anaheim Bulletin, Named one of seven major award winners last year in the annual contest held by the National Board of Fire Underwriters, the Bulletin and its publisher Howard Loudon were feted by county, state and national fire prevention authorities. A scrap book submitted by the paper, showing activities of the junior fire department, was adjudged in the top seven prevention organizations in the nation for the year — with only one other newspaper west of Chicago, winning recognition.
Success of the program has been attributed by city officials, Mayor Charles Pearson and civic leaders, to the cooperation between teachers and parents in promoting the program whereby sixth-grader seek out possible causes of fire and recommend their elimination. Credit slips are signed by householders which in turn are double checked by teachers before issuing credit to a student. The child receiving the highest number of credit slips in his class room, becomes assistant chief. Winning school is awarded the Bulletin Trophy to keep until the following year's competition.
A new era in long distance communications will start for Anaheim telephone users shortly after midnight Saturday when Pacific Telephone places into service its million operator toll dialing chine in Los Angeles.
Special switching equipment has been installed and tested in Anaheim telephone office that into the huge electronic device permitting long distance operation to place calls for customers distant cities without the help of other operators along the route or at the destination.
Most long distance calls will through in less than a minute manager Herb Perry, said too many will be completed in matter of only a few seconds.
He explained how a typical call will be handled by the machine:
First, a customer dials the long distance operator and ask her (example) for MUrayhill 8-900 New York City. The operator plays into a long distance trunk line and receives a dial signal telling the machine is ready to process with the call.
Then, swiftly punching (key pressing) a set of keys that look like those on an adding machine, "dials" the number direct. Key pulses the digits 2-1-2 to her into the New York area then digits M-U-8-9-0-0-0. Called person answers his telephone, usually in less than a minute.
To do its job, the operator dialing machine uses various pieces of equipment with graphic-sounding names like senders, master decoder-translators, and cross-switches.
The Los Angeles installation largest and third to be established on the West Coast, was started 1 June. It is capable of handling 20,000 calls per hour and will co-prise what is known to telephone engineers as a regional center for the national line-up. The regional centers are important "cross roads" or control switching points on the national network.

Anaheim police were investigating two possible burglaries today, one involving the theft of a diamond engagement ring and the other, theft of a rare, hand-carved Swiss music box from a local school room.
The music box, on exhibition in the classroom of Mrs. Margaret Simpson Haugh, at Thomas Jefferson elementary school, was removed from the classroom sometime either Tuesday or Wednesday, she told investigating officers yesterday. The hand-carved and inlaid box was valued at $36 by Mrs. Haugh, who today offered a reward for the return of the music box which she said has a high sentimental value.
Entering the home of Mrs. Clara Ellen Calip 315 East North St., sometime yesterday between 12:45 and 1:30 p.m., thieves stole a five-eight carat diamond engagement ring from its place in a jewel box in a bedroom of the home. The ring was valued at $250 its owner said. Entry was made into the home by means of an unlocked front door.
