Bright Prospects
Are you worried about the economic outlook?
You won't be if you take a good look at the long range prospects which are in store for America. Those who make a business of looking well ahead point up the following facts.
Every day 11,000 babies are born in the United States. In a week that is equivalent to creating an entirely new city the approximate size of Stockton or Santa Monica, and in a month a city about as big as San Diego. This means an increasing demand for consumer goods of all kinds, not just baby goods alone. It means more homes, more schools, more churches, more hospitals, more construction of every type. And these things mean prosperity.
Consider also the fact that the American people have far more money to spend than they did 10 or 15 years ago and their net purchasing power is greater. In 1940, savings amounted to about $70 billion. Now they are around $250 billion. People make more, spend more and, wisely, save more. It is estimated that 40 million more people now enjoy paid vacations than was the time before.
It is incredible to be in the United States therelieves in the sand march and threat of consciously the communists round and cut off the Path of widely established base at the north we have the Bering Straits, from the China to Indo China. Athey are planning on a mosa. Jump from there the Pacific isolated.

It is estimated that 40 million more people now enjoy paid vacations than was the case 10 years ago. This is a boon to the tourist business, to hotels, resorts, transportation industries, the entertainment field and manufacturers of sports equipment as well as the clothing industry and other times.
One prediction is that America will some day have a population of 200 million, 80 million jobs, 75 million motor cars; that fully one-third of the businesses in 1980 will be those unknown today; that farmers will grow crops that will feed industrial machines; and that the life span will be increased at least another 10 years.
Doubt it? Stick around a while and see.
Goodwin Knight Makes Good
When Goodwin J. Knight became Governor of California last autumn, he was somewhat in the position of a baseball player, talented but not yet tried in the fire of Major League competition, suddenly thrust into the lineup of the New York Yankees. For the Governorship of California is as big-league a challenge as America offers to a public servant, short of the Presidency itself.
California, down the years, has had quite a few good Governors but we recall no one who has achieved so much so constructively in so short a time. Already Goodwin Knight has spectacularly "struck out" some of the knottiest governmental problems confronting our State when he took office. Among his outstanding achievements:
Liquor control reform — affording the people opportunity to vote this year on a "clear-up" proposal to strengthen and streamline administration of beverage industry regulations.
State Employment Department reorganization — including saving the taxpayers millions by curbing the costly abuse of chiseling on the fund, and effecting a $5 increase to $30 weekly in maximum unemployment benefits. This without increasing the tax burden!
Frontal attack on the narcotics menace — through new controls relentlessly aimed at making California a far more dangerous pace than it has been for traffickers in this youth-destroying vice.
Rigid economy — through a State budget wrung dry of the waters of waste, duplication and overlapping for all administrative departments.
Harmony in Government — presenting the picture march and threat of physically the communists around and cut off the Path of widely established base at the north we have the Bering Straits, from the China to Indo China. All they are planning on a mosa. Jump from there to the Pacific isolated.

Yes, the new Governor has brilliantly proven out as a chief executive of the first magnitude, altogether worthy of overwhelming endorsement by the public he serves for a full four-year term.
"CHANGE . . . AND DECAY!"
When quiet streets put by their past allure
And blossom out in garish neon signs:
When nooks we knew before we grew mature
Will not serve beer—but proffer foreign wines
To quench Youth's thirsts: when civic alleyways
Are labelled—quaint—Bohemian: when shrines
We worshipped at thru all our yesterdays
Prove blatant traps to snatch the tourist's coin—
Should we grudge promoters their meed of praise?
Of course the fact that fane and dive adjoin
Is secondary—but we must take care
To give Now's merchants no chance to purloin
The bulk of dreams in which we once had share—
As fuel to enhance their Mazda's glare!

The Publisher Comments
It is incredible to believe that there are still those in the United States that, like the ostrich, are hiding their heads in the sand and refuse to see the forward thrust and threat of communism to our freedom. Physically the communists are planning to completely surpass and cut off the Pacific through the use of a series of widely established bases, all with air strips. Starting from the north we have the Communists in control of the Yang Straits, from there they extend down through China to Indo China. According to all reports and fears we are planning on a full scale attempt to take Formosa. Jump from there to Guatemala and you have Pacific isolated.
With this control Japan, the Philippines and the GENEVA—They are heading toward an armistice in Indochina—provided the Communists will agree. The technical work and the planning necessary to work out a military line in Viet Nam which can be militarily safeguarded have begun. But the Communists give no sign of concurrence because the latest developments in the French Parliament open the door to a further exploitation of the French situation by Communist stalling.
Just as allied unity began to make its appearance, with the splendid statements by Prime Minister Churchill in the British Parliament about American-British cooperation the French Chamber of Deputies started to expose once more the weakness of the present French Cabinet. The steady pressure of the opposition parties and elements in the government coalition to force a debate on Indochina is continuing. Once the debate occurs, the present government in Paris may fall and then negotiations here would be delayed.
This correspondent talked today with one of the leaders of the opposition group of the French Parliament, who insisted that the next government would be "more united" than the present regime. What he meant, of course, is "united" behind the ratification of the European Defense Community agreement, postponed until July, which is a long way off. Asked what a change in government would mean with respect to Indochina, he said it would be the forerunner of a policy of "saving the boys," and he referred to America's armistice in Korea as a significant precedent.
A canvass of the French situation reveals, on the other hand, that the sentiment for a strong policy of reorganization of the whole French command is growing and that, if the Geneva conference fails to produce an armistice, a comprehensive program of military action can be expected. This calls for an action referred to by Secretary State Dulles at his press conference in Washington to bring the Nations into the picture of strument for the protection integrity and independence and Cambodia, both of which tries have been invaded by Muslim troops from across der in Viet Nam. Thailand has been threatened, will lead on the idea in the U.S.
So the pressure on the nests is threefold:
First, the American-French on a military plan to aid fenders of Indochina aggression, which will be mented by staff talks in ton starting on June 1 bet military chiefs of Britain, Australia, New Zealand and United States. This plan continue whether or not the armistice in Indochina be will be necessary to assure violability of the truce line.
Second, the sending of a session of the United Nations serve and report to the U.S.eral Assembly as to against Laos and Cambodia could mean United Nations analogous to that which was in June, 1954 in Korea.
Third, the formation of manent Southeast Asia which now embraces a few but which will include Grenada as well as certain other countries when the Geneference is concluded.
All these moves are being out now by the most inti operation between Wall Paris and London as well neva. General Walter Bede former American Ambassador Moscow and head of the A delegation here, is main close contact with Mr. Mo well as with Foreign Minister and Foreign Minister Bliden skill as a diplomat as well background as a soldier—General Eisenhower's Chief
With this control Japan, the Philippines and the Hawaiian Islands would be hard to hold since the Pana-Canal would be vulnerable with the communists in Indonesia. They would also have a control over ships going around Cape Horn with these bases not only on air strips but with submarines operating effectively from these strategic locations. The United States could be forced to transport all defense across the country by rail, truck or air to the West Coast, our fleet would have to battle its way around the Cape. South America cannot be counted on for too much support, our governments have never been too friendly at best. We know that Russia is attempting to take this nation or subdue it, every action is pointed toward this objective. Why is it then, that people within this country refuse to look for danger signs within. Why is it continually shout "Fascist", "Radical Patriot" or such phrase to those who are uncovering the commist activity in our social, civic, educational and governmental life. It is impossible to believe that these persons are so naive to be taken in by the propaganda in favor of Russia. Impossible to believe that they cannot english the clever use of inference and insinuation, moulding of the thought of the weak to believe and adopt Russian doctrine.
There is but one thing left to believe, that these persons are in favor of the moves Russia is making, be by their actions they are aiding and abetting the enemy.
When the war with Russia does break, and it will, the persons who have been afraid to look reality in peace may thank themselves that they have been parity responsible for the lives that will be lost, not only the fighting man but like the civilians at Hiroshima.

The objective in Geneva peace. There is no desire pand the war in Indochina bring about American military intervention if it can possibly avoided. None of the allies it, but the Communists aim with no doubt that militarization is a realistic alternate they do not soon show a tory attitude.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark — You can see her most any day in the sleepy little town of Winslow, Ark.
A little old lady dashing through the streets, a battered felt hat on her head, a bundle of newspapers under her arm. A stranger passing through the Ozarks community would ask, "Who is she?" A grandmother with a paper route?
"Not exactly," any of the 400 persons in Winslow could answer. "She's Miss Maude—Mrs. Maude Duncan. She publishes those papers she's delivering."
Maude Duncan at 80 is owner, publisher, editor, reporter, printer; advertising salesman, circulation manager and carrier for the Winslow American a four-page weekly. One of the few hand-set newspapers in the nation.
Press Wired Together
Her plant is a quaint, pine-boarded, one-room cabin heated with a wood-burning stove. Her press is wired—to hold it together in several places. Type is so scattered around the office you wonder how she finds enough to set a paragraph.
"I call the plant America's outstanding example of organized confusion," Mrs. Duncan laughed.

Othman's Views on Washington Scenes
LAWRENCE
By FREDERICK C. OTHMAY
plan referred to by Secretary of State Dulles at his press conference in Washington to bring the United Nations into the picture as an instrument for the protection of the integrity and independence of Laos and Cambodia, both of which countries have been invaded by Communist troops from across the border in Viet Nam. Thailand, which has been threatened, will take the lead on the idea in the U.N.
So the pressure on the Communists is threefold:
First, the American-French talks on a military plan to aid the defenders of Indochina against aggression, which will be supplemented by staff talks in Washington starting on June 1 between the military chiefs of Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. This planning will continue whether or not there is an armistice in Indochina because it will be necessary to assure the inviolability of the truce line.
Second, the sending of a commission of the United Nations to observe and report to the U.N. General Assembly as to aggression against Laos and Cambodia. This would mean United Nations action analogous to that which was taken in June, 1954 in Korea.
Third, the formation of a permanent Southeast Asia alliance, which now embraces a few states but which will include Great Britain as well as certain other Asian countries when the Geneva conference is concluded.
All these moves are being worked out now by the most intimate cooperation between Washington, Paris and London as well As Geneva. General Walter Bedell Smith, former American Ambassador to Moscow and head of the American delegation here, is maintaining a close contact with Mr. Molotov as well as with Foreign Minister Eden and Foreign Minister Bidault. His skill as a diplomat as well as his background as a soldier—he was general Eisenhower's Chief of Staff WASHINGTON—What our Army needs is more late hours for soldiers. And less sleep.
Let the fighting men stay out all night, if they want, and struggle in at dawn for rewille. Give 'em long week-ends in the big city. That's the way to make good soldiers.
I say this adversely, after listening to Maj. Gen. Cornelius E. Ryan, commander of the big Army induction center at Fort Dix, N.J., tell the Senate investigating committee about Private G. David Schine.
G. David, you know, is the millionaire son of a multi-millionaire father. He was drafted while he was in midst of investigating Communists for Sen. Joe McCarthy. Well, sir, Private Schine spent nearly as many nights away from camp as he did in it.
He got pass after pass, Gen. Ryan testified, so he could continue his work with the McCarthy subcommittee in New York. If he spent a little time in places like the Stork Club—well, he had to eat, didn't he?
So there was the Army's best-known private coming back to camp late, night after night. You'd think he'd have been bleary-eyed and sallow on his feet. But not G. David.
He throve on this day-and-night operation and, when he left Fort Dix after three months of basic training, his commanding officers rated him superior in efficiency. They also classified his character as only fair, but efficiency is what counts in a soldier and it is perfectly obvious to me that late hours help to keep fighting men fit.
That is my own opinion, of course. Gen. Ryan figures the other way.
He said under oath that he didn't think all these passes for business in New York were good for his most celebrated private. He said he believed Schine should have stayed in camp more nights and got his proper sleep.
General said, in fact, that he operational operations. Schine spent his days working with ammunition and he might have killed somebody. Or maybe even himself. So said Gen. Ryan.
Still and all, Private Schine did no such thing. He was on his well-shined toes all the time (even though he old hire a bootblack to polish his shoes), and efficient he most certainly was. Maybe hiring somebody else to black his boots was an indication of his efficiency.
And with that I rest my argument in favor of more night life for the infantry, and turn to the matter of Army's charts. The military does practically everything by chart, and so it was not surprising when a colonel lugged into the hearing room a diagram with numerous black spots, indicting the nights Private Schine had spent privately. Another chart, all white, showed how the average soldier spent his-evenings.
Sen. McCarthy said this was a cheating way to fool the TV audience, making Private Schine's military career look black. While he talked, one of his assistants with a big crayon blacked numerous spots on the average G.I.'s chart, so that it looked almost as black as G. David's. Why, demanded the senator, didn't the Army make both charts look black if it wasn't to mislead the customers? He asked this of the general and also of the general's side, young First Lieut. John B. Blunt. Didn't the lieutenant agree with the senator?
"No, sir," said Lieut. Blunt. "I believe the spots are different colors for the same reason that, on television, one boxer wears dark trunks and the other light."
That almost stopped Sen. McCarthy, but he joined in the laughter. And I doubt that I'll ever see another boxing match without recalling Lieut. Blunt and his squelch elegant.

Your Birthday Forecast
By STELLA
FRIDAY, MAY 28—Born today, you have an alert mind and one which works with lightning-like speed when it is time to act. Although impulsive, you learned early in life that self-control is the far better policy. You are highly practical when it comes to solving problems and know how to make just decisions without causing hard feelings, even if you have to pass judgment against personal friends.
You are definitely a "homebody" and are always happiest when surrounded by your own family and neighbors. Wed at an early age, for you will never be content to be aunt or uncle to other people's children. You will want your own! You are romantic and popular with members of the opposite sex.
You like to write letters and receive them. You enjoy activity and excitement. Consequently, you will make it your business to see that you are in the midst of activity at all times.
Among those who were born on this date are Sir Thomas Moore, poet; Amelia Bloomer, reformer; Avery Hopwood, playwright; Louis Agassiz, naturalist, and William A. Buckingham, early Connecticut governor.

HOLLYWOOD (UP)—A television producer launched a crusade today against the custom that summer is the time you turn off your TV set and wait for "the good winter shows."
Ernie Glucksmans first blow for the cause of good summer TV, he says, will be NBC's "Saturday Night Revue". He's lined up Eddie Albert, Ben Blue and Alan Young as regulars, and they'll be surrounded by guest stars throughout the season.
"This is my grusade," the well-known producer said enthusiastically as he sat in a crowded, noisy rehearsal hall of NBC studios in Burbank.
Resents: Attitude
"I've always resented the attitude of people that in the summer-time they get junk on television."
Unfortunately they often do, according to many TV critics. But Glucksmans hopes his "Saturday Night Revue" will prove otherwise when it takes over as replacement for the "Show of Shows."
In anticipation of the switch, he confessed, numerous unhappy viewers have written him complaining that "Ibr the next three months they expected indifferent or poor shows."
Conditions Public
Besides conditioning the public to watching summer TV, Glucksman and other producers have the task of trying to educate TV networks, and sponsors, too. They often follow the pattern set by radio,
though deplored by many experts, of lightweight shows for allegedly smaller summer audiences.
"There are 150 million people in the United States, and only a small percentage go on vacations," the producer went on. "Some go for two weeks, but most for one week. And even then only a small number are out of reach of TV sets."
New Talent
Glucksman plans to promote new talent such as singer Carol Richards, who's dubbed voices in films for such stars as Versa-Ellen and Rita Hayworth, and comedienne Pat Carroll. He's also hired the Sauter-Finegan band, the most provocative group since Stan Kenton, as regular musicians for the program.
"This won't be as lavish as 'Show of Shows.'" the producer added. "But it's no small budget program. We plan a winter show for the summer."

I think that when I take inventory of his position in the McCarthy-Stewens fued he'll pull in his horns and make peace with Mac. Cause you see Mac may not be the biggest gun in the G.O.P. ranks, but he shore wus the biggest Gun in Routing the Democrat outta Washington ... know. Cause I'm a Turncoat Democrat myself.
