Don, Hornet Nines Fight it Out Friday
Santa Ana's bearded Dona, taking time off from their Spanish Fiesta celebration Friday, will play Fullerton's Hornets in baseball at Memorial Park, with both teams fighting to get out of the second division.
Fullerton upset league-leading Orange Coast last week, 10 to 6, so will be favored to turn back next-to-last Santa Ana. But the traditional rivalry between the teams, plus Santa Ana's anxiety to win before a partisan Fiesta crowd, might make the game a close one.
Mt. San Antonio routed the Donez, 18 to 9, last week.
The conference standings as of May 10:
W L Pct.
Orange Coast 8 2 .800
Chaffey 6 3 .567
Riverside 5 4 .556
Mt. San Antonio 5 5 .500
Pullerton 4 5 .444
Santa Ana 2 6 .250

Cleveland Chalks Up Third Straight Win Over Yankees
It was difficult, even in the face of their third straight victory over the world champions, to work up enthusiasm for the Cleveland Indians as pennant successors to the Yankees.
True, they dropped their first seven games to the Yankees by year, and there was no discounting the fine relief pitching of rookie Manager Al Lopez had call on a starter, Mike Carella, is to go in Wednesday's final game, for two innings of run work.
The Yankees took a 3-0 lead the first off Lemon on Phil Zuto's single and doubles by Noren and Gene Woodling, in spursed with errors by Hegan and Bobby Avila.
Cleveland rebounded as A singled and Ford walked the two and was replaced by Kuzai Al Rosen's two-run single precee Phillies' four-run homer by George Strickland's double, gan's triple and Avila's scoring completed the rally.
The Yanks pecked away, scored two off Lemon on four hits causing his removal in the McDougald's double and the Hepp passed ball plus Andy Carey's sond homer in as many games made it 8-7 in the third. Therea Mossi and rookie Bob Grim tied scorelessly until Mossi walked two in the eighth and Garcia came on to protect the narrow margin.
Tempers flared in the thriller which Manager Casey Stergel led the Yankees, catcher Yogi Berra and Coach Frank Crosetti wan banished and Cleveland pilot Lopez almost suffe ed a simile fate from boss, umpire Bill Sumers.
In the only other scheduled run for league game, the Orioles road from behind with four runs in ninth to defeat the Athletics, handing rookie Bob Trice his sond defeat in as many days.
IMPROMPTU CARTWHEEL—Portland third sacker Rocky Kosnick goes head over heels as Los Angeles' Bob Usher (21) skids into him in third inning of bottom half of a doubleheader in Los Angeles. Action resulted when Angel Dixie Upright hit to the Portland pitcher, who on a fielder's choice threw to Kosnick to take Usher for the out. Portland took both games, 4-2 and 8-4.
SPORTS PARADE
OSCAR FRALEY
NEW YORK — Wally Moon of the St. Louis Cardinals and Bill Tuttle of the Detroit Tigers, a pair of 24-year-old outfielders who have been performing like veterans, appeared today to be front and center in the race for Rookie of the Year honors.
Moon, if he maintains his current pace, may walk off and hide from the remainder of the National League hopefuls because the senior circuit crop of freshmen does not appear overpowering. His closest competition could come from a teammate, first baseman Tom Alston.
But it's a different story in the American League.
There the competition promises to be heated right down to the wire and even now you can build a leading case for Bible-reading Bob Trice of the Philadelphia Athletics, with such as Bill Skowron of the Yankees, Rudy Regaldo of the Indians, Spook Jacobs of the A's and Detroit's Frank Boling threatening to crowd into the act.
The National League has come up with a flock of good newcomers, men like Pittsburgh's Curt Roberts, Milwaukee's Gene Conley, Cincinnati's Corky Valentine and Chicago's Gene Baker and Ernie Banks.
But Moon has been getting most of the raves by living up to expectations, which in themselves were stratospherically high when you consider that the Cards were so confident that he would produce they peddled off Enos (Country) Slaughter. Wally has lived up to those hopes to date, leading the league in runs scored and standing fourth in hits.
Tuttle you have to give the current edge in the American League, merely on the fact that he is the loop's leading hitter with a .375 average. A 6-foot, 185-pounder who attended Bradley University for three years, Tuttle gave excellent minor league performances with the stick by batting .364 at Davenport and .302 at Williamsport. However, he tapered off to .276 at Buffalo last year and there are some who think he will come down quite a bit from his current battin pace.
If he does, the 6-foot, 3-inch Trice is ready to step forward, particularly if he maintains his current pace of four wins against one loss.
The current western trip of the Yankees may provide the impetus which could push Skowron forward into the limelight. He has been sharing first base duties with veterans Joe Collins and Ed Robinson.
In the only other scheduled major league game, the Orioles road from behind with four runs in ninth to defeat the Athletics, handing rookie Bob Trice his second defeat in as many days a relief role. Trice came on w/the bases loaded and one outthe ninth to relieve Ed Burke Gil Coan hit a single for one Dick Kryhoski followed with a try run double and Sam Mele produced the winning run with a sacrifice fly. Howie Fox gained his victory in a relief chore as Batmore made it two wins in a row Kryhoski drove in four runs w/his double and two singles.
Monday's Star: Dave Philley the Indians, who provided the blow, a grand slam homer in eight-run first inning which stumped for an 8-7 victory over the Yankees.

Game to Be TV'd
OTTAWA (UP)—Canadian professional football will compete with the colorful United States college game this fall for the Saturday afternoon television attention of Americans.
The National Broadcasting Company will reach north of the border for football fare to match the college games awarded to the American Broadcasting Company by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
An agreement reached here Monday calls for the publicly-owned Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to shoot 13 games of the Eastern Canadian Big Four League and pipe them to NBC at Buffalo, N.Y., by microwave. NBC, providing its own commentary, will carry the games live on a national basis. It will be the first time Canadian football has received regular coverage in the United States.
The Big Four teams are the Montreal Alouettes, the Ottawa Rough Riders, the Toronto Argonauts, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, last year's national champions.
All the cities are in the eastern time zone, which means the telecasts will be on the air at approximately the same time as many U.S. college games are played.
American television fans will find that many players from the U.S. professional and college ranks preceded the TV cameras to Canada. In the coming season, each team will be able to have 10 American "imports" and will be allowed to dress 8 for each game.
None of the rosters was finally settled. The talent battle the clubs have waged with the National Football League in the past few years helped them keep mum about prospects.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (UP)—Frank Thomas, who learned his football from Knute Rockne and taught it to Don Hutson, died Monday night in this small University of Alabama campus town where he wrote one of football’s greatest coaching stories.
The 55-year old Notre Dame quarterback had been ill since January, 1947, when he retired as the Crimson Tide’s head football coach and became athletic director. He retired from that post in 1952.
From 1931, when Thomas succeeded Wallace Wade as coach until 1947, the Tide won 115 games, lost 24 and tied 7 while going to bowl games six times.

Winner of second place honors in the all-Southern California junior college track meet, Santa Ana College will send a powerful team to the Fresno Relays this weekend for more laurels.

The Tartars scored 66 points, followed by Santa Ana with 55; Los Angeles Valley and Los Angeles City with 51; Mt. San Antonio, 33; Long Beach, 30; East Los Angeles 29; Glendale, 27; Harbor, 20; Pasadena, 18; Santa Monica, 14; Bakersfield, 12; Chaffey, #; El Camino, 10; Fullerton 4; Muir, 2; San Bernardino, 1; Orange Coast, Antelope Valley and Citrus, 0.
At Fresno, Coach John Ward will take from 12 to 15 men for the Saturday night events. Dick Carson of Garden Grove and Chuck Neal and Jack McCosh of Santa Ana will form a strong high-hurdling trio.
