YOUNG HISTORICAL TREE—Dorothy Dees, last semester's editor of the prize-winning campus newspaper at Santa Ana College, checks growth of new ginkgo tree with J. Russell Bruff, head of the SAC science department, which he planted as a possible replacement for historic campus tree. (SAC photo) New Ginkgo Trees to Protect Tradition of Don College Students; Believed to Be 'Old as Man' The name ginkgo tree has meaning on the Santa Ana College campus, whether referring to a cluster of small shoots or the state tree which has shaded Don students for many years. Northwest of the Student Union is a full-grown ginkgo tree, which grew originally on the ninth and Main street campus of the college before the present campus at 17th and Bristol Sts. was established. When the Main street site was purchased for Buffums' department store, sentimental tree lovers asked that it might be moved, and the tremendous task was completed by professional tree movers in 1949. The transplanting set back the tree and much dead wood has been cut out. Although it has leafed out and flowering plants, The fruit on the tree resembles a plum, and is orange yellow in color. The fruit contains a nut which is cleaned and eaten in China. The first site of the tree was where Santa Ana's early-day high school was located, later becoming the junior high school, and then the Willard Junior High School when the campus was divided a quarter-century ago. The junior college classes took over the site after the 1933 earthquake and the picturesque tree was a meeting place for many students. Although it has leafed out again this spring, some question as to its eventual survival has been expressed by J. Russell Bruff, long time head of the SAC science department and botany instructor. So he decided to plant several new ginkgo trees as ultimate replacements in event the old tree dies, or as supplemental trees in any event. One of the new trees is planted in a small circular garden on the northwest side of Mr. Bruff's laboratory. Another is located on the edge of a nearby campus or orange grove. "If all goes well, these trees should be full grown in about 25 years," Bruff said. Legend of the Ginko Believed to be as old as man, the ginkgo tree comes from the Orient. It has fan shaped leaves which resemble the maidenhair fern. Some biologist believe that it is the "missing link" between ferns Hoag Fund Raising Benefit Scheduled The annual fund raising benefit for the Auxiliary to the Hoag Memorial Hospital, will be held on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale.
