Placentia Sea Scouts Give Mast For New Boat
PLACENTIA (OCNS)—Placentia Sea Scouts showed their gratitude to the owners of the Balboa Pavilion when they presented them with a solid mahogany mast made by the boys, to be stepped on the company's new super fishing boat "Frontier."
The boys became acquainted with the owners, Roy Gronsky, and his son, Art, during the Boy Scout Jamboree when Placentia manned the official host ship in the harbor. All facilities there were tied up and the scouts found much difficulty with such things as docking areas and recharging equipment.
The Gronskys welcomed the boys and even turned away cash paying customers to accommodate them.
Recently they finished what is probably the most modern fishing boat available to day passengers in the area. The craft seats 40 persons at dining tables and can sleep at least 20 persons in built-in bunks.
The "Frontier" will attain at least 25 knots speed.
Upon completion of the craft, the Placentia boys noticed that she did not have a mast, and the owners explained that they would arrange some kind of post so that they could fly a flag. This did not suit the scouts, so they went home to Valencia High school and knocked out an 11-foot mahogany mast in the school shop, with the help of their shop teacher and skipper, Hal Polley.
During the weekend, they stepped the mast on the new ship which will be ready for launching Thursday, when several of the boys will join her for a shakedown cruise.

SANTA ANA — Admitted boat burglar Carl William Hanneham, 28, Costa Mesa, was granted a continuance until next Friday for a probation hearing in Orange County Superior Court.

Truman Says He Won’t Seek Top Office Again
By DAYTON MOORE
United Press Staff Correspondent
WASHINGTON (UP)—If it’s any comfort to President Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman isn’t going to get his old job back for at least another 20 years.
Not that he didn’t like being president. Not at all. He told reporters he even misses the old tumble of White House press conferences.
But he added with a twinkle: “I’m just as happy trying to be private citizen, which is a helluva.”
He noted he had turned only 70 days week. But he hastened to add that he has “no intention of running for office until after I’m 90.”
The man from Missouri distributed these observations in a live-give and take with reporters on Sunday afternoon after he had levered a speech at the National Press Club.
He was in high good humor, ighed often and obviously ended the session.
Mr. Truman turned aside questions on what he would do about serious presidential problems if he were back in the White House. But he made it clear he would take the positive action to silence Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis.) if senator were a Democrat and Mr. Truman were in control.
If I were president, I’d tell you I’d do it,” he said. “Were I led of the Democratic party and had a demagogue in the Democratic party, I’d take care of him.”
Mr. Truman declined to say whether Mr. Eisenhower is doing worse, as good or better job as resident than himself. But Mr.

For Highway Use
SACRAMENTO—State Controller Robert C. Kirkwood today distributed $87,668 to Orange County as its share of the $4,370,153 in Highway Users Taxes available for apportionment to counties for the month ended March 31, 1954.
Of the $17,887,201 in the Highway Users Tax Fund for distribution, the counties received $4,370,153; the State Highway Fund for Cities, $1,739,515; and the State Highway Fund for Expenditures on Highways, $11,777,533.
Down $3,482,010 under the total distribution for the previous month, the $17,887,201 March apportionment was $3,451,448 over March 1953.
Kirkwood pointed out that Gasoline Tax Collections for March totaled $19,812,511, a decrease of $1,680,743 under the previous month. Collections were $4,783,288 above the same period a year ago due primarily to the increase in the tax rate to 6 cents per gallon.
Also down $1,134,716 was the March transfer from the Motor Vehicle Transportation Tax Fund to the Highway Users Tax Fund. The transfer amounted to only $104,752. This was 92 per cent under the February 28, 1954 balance, and a decrease of $699,844, or 87 per cent under the March 31, 1953 balance.
Use (Diesel) Fuel Tax Collections for March totaled $977,999, an increase of $117,134 over collections for the previous month.
Refunds for non-highway users during March totaled $2,927,812, an increase of $635,375 over refunds for the month ended February 28, 1954.
Net gasoline tax for March was $16,803,155 after deducting the $2,-927,812 in refunds, and $88,819 in administrative expenses. Miscellaneous income amounted to $1,295.

It was the sentence Superior Judge Robert Gardner handed him in Orange County Superior Court Friday--six months in the county jail. He had pleaded guilty to petty theft with a prior felony conviction and admitted having served six prior, penitentiary terms. While the petty theft with a prior conviction is a felony in itself, Judge Gardner ruled that the crime was not one to constitute another prison term but serious enough to warrant a jail sentence.

Salvation Army Opens Salvage Week May 24
An outside article tossed aside in an Anaheim home can bring new hope to men who are "down but not out," according to chairman of the citizens committee for the annual Salvation Army Salvage Week campaign here.
Discarded articles donated by local residents in the drive, May 24, 29, will be reconditioned in workshops of the Salvation Army Social Service Center which serves this area. This will provide a program of occupational therapy for home less and handicapped men.
Last year's donations provided an all-time high of 261,640 hours of occupational therapy, 58,704 meals and 19,092 lodgings, in addition to thousands of dollars in food, clothing and household articles given directly to needy families.
The center continuously needs discarded but still usable clothing, shoes, furniture, bedding, dishes, bric-a-brac, bicycles, rugs, rags, and miscellaneous articles to continue the program.
During the Salvage Week a special fleet of Red Shield trucks will answer telephone calls to collect castoff articles. Local residents may telephone Keystone 5-4631 to bring a truck to home or office.
PROPOSAL BRINGS DISSENT—Senator Everett Dirksen (R., Ill.) is shown as he formally moved that the public hearings of the McCarthy-Army dispute be ended with testimony by Senator McCarthy and any subsequent witnesses be heard behind closed doors. Both the Army and Democratic members of the investigating subcommittee objected to putting the hearings "under the rug."
