Schedule Released for Local Net Event
The schedule of matches for the Third Annual Anaheim Tennis Championships was released today by the Anaheim Recreation Department, sponsor of the net event, which again this year has traced a record number of local players.
Because of the size of the draw, and the fact that many are treated in three or four divisions, matches will start during the week, although the City Park courts will see a steady procession of matches on Saturday and Sunday. All rounds up to the semi-finals will be completed by this weekend, with semi-final and final matches to be staged on May 15-16.
Beautiful trophies will be awarded to winners and runners-up in each group. It is hoped to have these on display at the regular meeting of the Anaheim Tennis Club this evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Williams, 406 West Sycamore St., when the club will meet to make final arrangements for the tournament.
Schedule of first round matches for this week are:
Wednesday, 3 p.m.-Mike Bouck vs. Merle Meyer, Willard Henry vs. Fred Fischle, Steve Morris vs. Jay Lillywhite, Ken Fenton vs. Lynn Oden, Barry Ryan vs. Don Turner, Bob Looper vs. Gary Bonner, and Don Lee vs. Bill Otta.
Wednesday, 7 p.m.-Anne Williams-Mike Bouck vs. Diane Richards-Dean Stokes.
Thursday, 2 p.m.-Ken Fenton vs. Bennie Eushmin, Don Kliss vs. Tom Doerr, and Bill Cook vs. Bob Owston.
Friday, 7 p.m.-Bill Walker vs. Barry Ryan.
Saturday, 10 a.m.-Lynn Oden vs. John Florance, Anne Williams vs. Caroline Kirven, Bob Simon, Jack Hersh, Bill Armstrong vs. Larry Harvill, Bob Hoskins vs. Dean Stokes, Bob Rosborough vs. John Langford.
Saturday, 11 a.m.-Marilita Ortez vs. Geraldine Hein, Kathleen Hathaway vs. Rita Flynn, Loren Panner vs. George Legg, Glynn Looper vs. John Easton, Dee and Bill Armstrong vs. Doris Holve-Larry Harvill and Johnny Helden vs. Dennis Chance.

RYING A DIFFERENT MAIL—Emmet Ashford, 36, of East Angeles, is the first Negro umpire in organized baseball. Here is a few pointers at Emeryville, Calif., on rubbing down baseballs from Senior Umpire Cece Carlucci (center) as Umpire Mickey Bush (right) looks on. Ashford, considered one of the best arbiters in Pacific Coast League, was a postal clerk for 15 years before being full time umpire.
ANGE Lionettes on Whirlwind Trip
BEHIND Bertha Ragan's dependable pitching and sharp all-around fielding.
The Lionettes are playing a 46 game schedule that will end with the International Play-offs here during Labor Day week, Sept. 6-12. With championships in 1950, 1951 and 1952 to their credit they will be working hard for the same honors this year.

Horsemen Win Use of River Levees
SANTA ANA--Orange County's horsemen, long - demanding that Santa Ana River levees be opened for their use, could claim a partial victory today; the board of supervisors agreed to open the east levee from Hamilton St. in Costa Mesa to 17th St. in Santa Ana.
That link may be all the horsemen and hikers get right away, the supervisors said, because the county doesn't own all the rights-of-way for he levee for its entire length along the river, nor does it own the entire river bed.
Access to the river levee was or-dered for Hamilton St., Adams St., Talbert Rd., Harbor Blvd., Edinger St., First St., Fifth St. and 17th St.
Through Forrest S. Paul of Costa Mesa, the horsemen had offered policing of the levee trail as long they had right to use it; the supervisors approved the plan. It forbids smoking except at closed areas calls for patrol by the horsemen to prevent vandalism, and forbids riding on sides of the levee.
