SPORTS BOB WICKS, Editor TOP QUARTER MILER — Rel Schmitt, former AUHS and Santa Ana College 440 man, faces Herbie Turner at the Fresno Relays tomorrow. Running for Occidental, Schmitt won the recent SCIC quarter mile in a sizzling 48.4 seconds around two turns, besting Bill Parker’s meet mark of 48.6. This performance ranks Schmitt as the fifth best in the nation. Turner has run a 48.1 with the only man to break 48 seconds being SC’s great runner Jim Lea. Schmitt’s best time as a Colonist was 54 seconds in 1951. In 1952 he ran 50.4 for the Dons, capturing the conference meet. Last year his best for Oxy was 49.6 which took the SCIC meet. Holly Stars Top Padres SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—All first division clubs in the Pacific Coast League are staying here this week, and last night should have stayed in bed. Because the creatures from depths of the second division re-ed up and clobbered the residence of the league’s upper half. Bearden Strong Seattle got both pitching hitting from lefty Gene Bess as the Rainiers turned back league leading Oaks. Bearden lited the Acorns to four hits, one in three runs with a single double and a home run and so twice. The former Cleveland ace ered with a mate on in the seating and then doubled in other tally in the fourth. In three-run ninth he scored as George Schmees doubled the bases full. Two of Oakland’s runs carried the ninth off Len Neal’s hole. Portland also used home power and neat pitching to Los Angeles. Rookie Joe Nicola submarined his way to a six and Walt Judnich hit two runs and drove in six tallies. Nicholas gave up home run Fred Richards and Bob Ushwin winning his first PCL decision. Holly Stars Top Padres BY FRED FISCHLE JR. Anaheim High's tennis team traveled to Newport Harbor Tuesday with high hopes of remaining in second place in the Sunset League, but the Colonist hopes were shattered by the Tars, who won by a score of 5-4. The outcome wasn't decided until the final match was finished. Anaheim's top two men, Barry Ryan and Mike Bouck, won their matches in fairly easy fashion, but the rest of the battles were very tight. The first doubles team of Bob Puckett and Billy Otta won the longest match of the day winning in three sets. Steve Morris and Bob Looper also played three sets, but weren't so fortunate, both losing. The Anaheim Junior Varsity lost by a 8-1 score. Don Kohlenberger was the only Jayvee to win for Anaheim. VARSITY Anaheim (4) Score Newport (8) SINGLES— B. Ryan (1) 6-4, 6-1 Craig M. LEMON HORNETS GUN FOR STATE SWIM CROWN FULLERTON — Tonight the Fullerton Junior College swimming team opens defense of their California State swim crown at Fresno State Junior College. The Hornets have won the title every year the tourney has been in existence. Providing the Hornets come through as expected, it will be their second State title this year. Fullerton's splashers displayed the true mark of a champion last week in the Southern California Championships held at Orange Coast when they came from behind with jet power in nearly every event to cop the meet. Coach Jimmy Smith's boys tallied an even 100 points for a margin of 28 points over their closest foe. The three-day meet starting today at Fresno will have entries from all junior college conferences in the State. Last year at San Luis Obispo, the Hornets took the title with 62 and one-half points.
