Motors, steels, chemicals, electrical equipments, containers, metals and special issues were the strong spots. The industrial average edged up to its best level for nearly 25 years. Rails were at their best since last July 2. Utilities were better although below their high. Chrysler ran up 2 points. General Motors gained a point to a new high. Bethlehem Steel ran up a point to feature the steels. Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line strengthened to sustain the utilities. A long list of issues registered new highs for the year and longer. Particular strength was displayed by Cities Service, Procter & Gamble, Scott Paper, National Cash Register, Minneapolis Honneywell, Gold & Stock Telegraph, and White Motor. Local Ventura county Chessman Hires Lawyer In Try to Save Life SAN QUENTIN (UP) — Caryl Chessman 32-year-old kidnaper- rapist scheduled to die May 14 drew on part of his royalties yesterday to hire an attorney in a final attempt to save himself from the San Quentin Prison gas chamber. Chessman retained Berwyn A. Rice San Rafael criminal lawyer who said he will make a personal appeal to Gov. Goodwin J. Knight on grounds of "new evidence" in the case. Knight refused on Monday to grant Chessman clemency. He explained yesterday that the crimes attributed to Chessman were "atrocious and unprintable." Chessman whose book "Cell 2455 Death Row" has been hailed as a remarkable study of a crim-inal mind said Rice's appeal to the governor will be his final effort to cheat the gas chamber. "I don't want a desperate last-minute so gamble appealing to the courts" he said. Huge New Tract Slated South of Santa Ana NEWPORT BEACH (OCNS) — Completion of a deal for the sale and purchase of 200 acres of level land south of Sunflower Ave., and West of Newport Blvd. just south of the Santa Ana city limits was announced today. The extensive acreage is being purchased by Ben King and Fred Byers of the Costa Mesa Builders who now are completing plans for the subdivision of the land.
