Toll Roads Hit As Money Losers In California SACRAMENTO (UP) — Why can't California have super-plush toll roads where speeds of up to 70 miles an hour are allowed? The question has been asked by many people, including some legislators who last year pushed a toll road bill through the Assembly only to have it killed in the Senate. The Public Works Department says the answer is simple: No toll road yet conceived for California can be other than a money-losing proposition. Besides, they answer, the state already has constructed 120 miles of "full freeway" which, because access is limited to "ends" of the roadway, is identical in construction to a toll road. "Full Freeways" The department says another 120 miles of "full freeway" is under construction, and the state has another 607 miles of "express-way," limited access roads. When the additional 120 miles of full freeway is completed California actually will have 240 of the 1107 miles of roadway in the nation which could be classified as "toll-road-type construction." The remaining mileage is toll roads in nine other states. Most notable of these is the original Pennsylvania Turnpike which was aided by a $29,500,000 federal Public Works Administration loan and built at a time when costs were low. $1,000,000 a Day California now is spending a million dollars a working day for highway construction in California to cure a three billion dollar highway deficiency. County Vegetable Acreage Tops 25,000 LOS ANGELES (UP)—Los Angeles county vegetable acreage still remains above 25,000 acres in spite of large losses to subdivision, University of California farm advisor J. W. Huffman reported today. Huffman added that the loss in acreage to subdivision each year appears to be decreasing, indicating a leveling-off period and a more stabilized vegetable agriculture. Vegetable farming now is being performed on a more intensive scale, necessitating the elimination of low-income crops, Huggman said. Radiologist Says Diesel Fumes-Tied to Cancer BRISTOL, England (UP) — A leading radiologist claimed yesterday the increase in lung cancer during the past 30 years closely followed the curve of the changeover in public transport from gasoline to diesel engines. Dr. B. Handley Howell of Weston-Super-Mare Hospital said his contentions was that fumes from diesel exhausts were far more dangerous than that from gasoline. Riverside Gains New Youth Camp Location RIVERSIDE (UP)—A $300,000 estate in Dark Canyon near the north fork of the San Jacinto River will be turned into a youth camp for 4-H clubs, Boy Scouts and similar organizations. Predict Lemon Boom In Imperial Valley BRAWLEY (UP)—A forthcoming lemon boom in the north end of Imperial valley was predicted today by growers in the area who have begun a lemon tree planting project on the desert. One grower, L. O. Walker, has started a lemon grove in the Niiland area and estimates that it eventually will cover about 1,000 acres on the East Mesa. Growers said the only drawback is a lack of young trees for development of lemon orchards on the Imperial valley desert. The Yuma lemon boom they said has taken almost every young tree produced.
