The Doctor Disagree
By Elizabeth Selfert
CHAPTER NINETEEN
EVERETT CARR cowled at Shelly's request that he not dismiss Dr. Talboy as plant doctor.
"Let me say what I have in mind. I've inquired at the hospital and found that there were no tests made which could determine that he had been drinking before he was hurt. He was hurt, yes, and gossip has made a big thing of how he was hurt, and why, and of the fact that Mrs. Armes died without a doctor in attendance. Now, those stories are of a sort that could ruin a new doctor in town ..."
"The man ruined himself!" barked Everett Carr. "Of course he was drunk! And it wasn't only Mrs. Armes that lacked his service. Laura Jarvis needed him, and couldn't get him—"
"Mrs. Jarvis tried to get him last night, when he was in the hospital."
"Well, he was in the hospital because he was drunk the previous night! Wasn't he?"
"Father Carr! Was he drunk? Do you know he was drunk? Does anyone know he was? I wonder if anyone has asked him."
"How could we ask him when..."
"But don't you think you should reserve judgment until the man can speak for himself? He might have been forced off the road—anything could have happened. We do not know. But to help him when..."
"I'll wait—There's no hurry. Of course, any announcement of his discharge here would finish the man in Norfolk, and if there's the least chance—yes, yes, we'll wait."
She stood up. "Thank you. You're very kind, but then I knew you would be."
The women of his family, thought Everett Carr, professed not to see why Stevie had married Shelly. If they ever had watched the girl walk out of the room, they'd know.
He cleared his throat heavily, and sat down again at his desk. He'd bet his next caller would not be so good-looking!
Miss Browne was caring for the office; Shelly went directly to the hospital, excitement beating small wings in her breast.
Craig Talboy occupied the last room on a long corridor; she tapped lightly on the half-open door, then stepped in. He lay, with the head of the bed raised a little, staring out of the window. "What is it?" he asked, without turning.
Good morning, Craig," said Shelly's lovely voice.
She saw his jerk, and saw pain wince across his dark face. "I'm sorry..." she breathed, going swiftly to the foot of the bed.
"I didn't expect callers," he said gruffly.
Not at this hour, at any rate. But they let me in. May I sit down?
His eyes were brighter for the her voice calm—but for all her forts, she spoke stiffly, and cooled "Mrs. Jarvis called at three o'clock this morning. You could not go to her house. I told her so."
"Did you try to send someone else?"
"No!"
"You should have."
"You know what she said me?" Shelly demanded, less forward.
"Heaven knows."
"She told me that she used doctor till she wore him out, then she got another one."
Craig laughed. He laughed aloud, pressing his flattened against his side because it hurt much to laugh.
His laughter hurt Shelly, She'd been indignant at Mrs. vis, not amused.
The floor nurse came to the door and frowned. "He isn't supposed to be excited," she reproved.
"I know," said Shelly, anxiously "And I didn't really say thing—"
"Well, be careful, will you?"
She withdrew, and Craig wished his eyes with a tissue, and he had a couple of times more. "So didn't come to amuse me."
"No. I came to—well, there a few questions about the car but really, Craig, I came to you about the accident."
"What's there to ask? I stand on a night call; I wrapped my..."

"But don't you think you should reserve judgment until the man can speak for himself? He might have been forced off the road—anything could have happened. We do not know. But to fire him as plant doctor just because it looks as if he might have been drunk... He's not a drinking man, I'm pretty sure. You said last night that a woman doesn't know about such things. I do know, Father Carr. And, besides, this morning I asked a couple of Stephen's friends if they'd ever seen Craig drink too much. Each one said, 'No.'"
"Oh, Shelly, Shelly—"
"I'm just asking you for an open mind, to be fair."
"Well, sure I want to be fair. But, Shelly, I've a big responsibility. This thing affects all the workmen here in the plant, and their families."
"I know. But, look—that accident could have happened to Stephen, you know. Would you have let people decide he was drunk, without any tests or other evidence?"
"No, because I know my son."
"And you don't know the man Stephen chose to take his place. But even that's a point, Father Carr. You don't know him well enough to decide he was drunk." Everett narrowed his eyes thoughtfully, and Shelly took quick advantage of the slight pause. "You haven't fired him yet?"
"No. No, yet."
"Will you let me talk to him before you take any such action? Will you do that for me, Father Carr? He's a little odd, I'll grant you. But Stephen put him here to take his place, and—well, let me talk to him and see what I get out of him. When I asked at the hospital about the tests, they said he was conscious, but wouldn't talk about the accident. But maybe he will talk to me. Will you let me try?"
"Man won't talk to you is dead!" said Everett Carr, laughing. "Sure,

His eyes were brighter for the sight of her slim prettiness. "Of course. Don't move the chair. I can turn—just too lazy."
"How are you feeling?"
"Don't know. Got me full of Secondal and novocaine. Head's funny, so's my tongue."
"I came to tell you about Donald. He's at our house."
"That was thoughtful of you, Shelly." He spoke like a very tired man. The sedative, perhaps?
"We enjoy him, and he likes us. Especially Ike."
"Still have the Vandables, do you?"
"Yes, they are lifesavers."
"What about the office? Close it up?"
"Oh, no," she said quickly. "Miss Browne is there this morning. Of course, we have to refer certain patients until you get well."
His full lips blew breath soundlessly between them.
"I had some business to attend to this morning, and I thought I should talk to you about—things, as soon as possible."
“What things?”
Why, patients, and stuff.
Beneath the white head bandage his black eyes stabbed at her. "Patients," he asked sharply, "like Mrs Jarvis?"
Shelly's red lips parted.
What in the devil did you say to her?" Craig demanded.
"I told her that She only had a headache, Dr. Talboy!"
"Only a headache!" he mimicked.
"You ever have migraine? If you do you'll think you're sick. And anyway, now can you diagnose over the telephone? I can't. Maybe the woman was sick. Was she?"
Shelly rubbed her white glove-fingers together, and straightened her siender shoulders under the black stuff of her suit. She moistened her lips, and fought to keep to be excited," she reproved.
"I know," said Shelly, anxious.
"And I didn't really say anything—"
Well, be careful, will you?
She withdrew, and Craig wished his eyes with a tissue, and he a couple of times more. "So didn't come to amuse me."
No. I came to—well, there a few questions about the oak But, really, Craig, I came to you about the accident."
What's there to ask? I stand on a night call; I wrapped my around a tree, and I ended up with a concussion and three bruises."
But they're saying such things around town . . .
That a drinking doctor should be allowed to practice. What's ful about that? He shouldn't allowed."
Do you mean to tell me you're going to lie here and them say what they want, do they want—and not defend yourself?
Till lie here until Ward said can get up. Then I'll not lie here.
That's not what I meant."
I know it isn't, Shelly." *
Aren't you going to defeef yourself at all?"
I can't really predict what do. But from here it looks as if defense would not be weak making That why I'm going tell you to stay out of the thick He raised himself painfully in bed. Clear out, Shelly Carri put the whole thing out of my mind. It's no fight for you to yourself into The whole town Norfolk has decided that it hires my guts—the Carrs, Dr Lew and the Norfolk County Med society—they're all against me why should you even try to bring such a thing?
Shelly's head was high, shoulders straight." Because," said clearly. "I think the way situation is based on what M calls a pine-blank lie!"
He considered Myra's test "Point-blank," I suppose means," he decided."
You may be ready to give Craig Talboy, but I'm not. I failure, and I loathe injustice!"
Now the black eyes were as as the fur ot-a cat. "Yes," he gravely, "so do L."

High Paying Jobs Open in Capital By Brew Industry
By JAMES C. ANDERSON
SACRAMENTO (UP) — Two jobs, one paying nearly $50,000 a year and the other offering $30,000 plus an unlimited expense account, may be available the next time the legislature convenes.
Both positions to use the polite term around the capitol, call for an experienced "legislative representative." In other words a lobbyist.
The clients presumably in need of talent come next January are the California Brewers Institute, the Southern California Spirits Foundation and the Wholesale Liquor Distributors of Northern California.
Up until the last session of the legislature in March, the Brewers employed roly-poly Arthur H. Samish as their No. 1 Sacramento lobbyist. The Spirits Foundation and Liquor Distributors were represented by Frank X. Flynn at $3000 a month.
Retirement Likely
But now, Flynn is dead and Samish is in the soup with the Internal Revenue Department and is likely to be retired when his contract with the Brewers expires July 1.
Sante Quattrain, executive secretary of the Liquor Distributors, said his organization has given no thought yet to Flynn's successor.
"We haven't even talked about it, we have no one in mind for the job and we're in no hurry to fill the position," he said.
James G. Hamilton, president of the Brewers Institute, said in his
internal Revenue Department and is likely to be retired when his contract with the Brewers expires July 1.
Sante Quattrain, executive secretary of the Liquor Distributors, said his organization has given no thought yet to Flynn's successor.
"We haven't even talked about it, we have no one in mind for the job and we're in no hurry to fill the position," he said.
James G. Hamilton, president of the Brewers Institute, said his industry is considering pensioning off Samish at a fee lower than his $30,000 annual salary.
Samish may have little chance to spend the money, however. Artie, once described as the "secret boss of California," faces a three-year prison term for income tax evasion. He currently is free on bail pending appeal and has been taking life easy at Palm Springs.
Official Account
While Hamilton listed Samish's Brewers salary at $30,000 the lobbyist's last official expense certificate filed here showed a salary of $1,250 a month from that account plus expenses that ran about $3,000 a month during the 1953 session.
Samish's actual income ran considerably more than what he made from the Brewers account. The government alleged at his recent trial that Samish and his wife had an income averaging $100,000 a year between 1946 and 1951.
Hamilton has given no hints as to who will succeed Samish although Emil Hoerchner, an astute attorney who has been chief counsel of the CBI for a number of years, represented the Brewers as their registered lobbyist in the 1954 session.
Other Lobbyists
Samish Flynn and Hoerchner were not the only lobbyists for the beer, wine and liquor interests in recent legislatures. Six other gentlemen were registered as lobbyists last session during the fight over liquor law reforms.
